Sandra,. Please talk with your dad about this. My dad died at 85. We spend many years talking and listening to music tapes he was making. He would of been now 102.. I made a picture calendar of us. That was their favorite favorite gift. I had pictures from 1920,s. Thank you for SHARING your special loving times. GOD BLESS YOU 🀄🀄🀄🛐🛐🛐🌹🀄

Hi Sandra Take a couple of minutes to remind your dad of that time and how much your memories mean to you. I’m sitting in a consultation room just outside of the ICU unit where my 89yo Mom is being cared for. She is semi with it but I keep talking to her about my memories of growing up with my two brothers Mom and Dad. I’m the only one left whose going to remember these special times. A trip to Puerto Rico, hiking and driving through the island the rain Forrest, we rented a guest house on the beach then decided we wanted a pool so we moved to a hotel the last few days. Fishing trips riding bicycles In Central Park in NYC huge Chinese diners on Sunday nights. How my dad would sing along with Harry Belafonte on Sundays My dad worked 6 days a week, Sundays were important. It’s now only Mom and I left, my dad and both brothers are both gone. My middle brothers name is Adam Keith Ruhalter, google him we lost in on 9/11 it’s always a struggle. But the thought of my mom no longer here scares me so much. Stay safe my never met friend talk to your dad reminisce a bit maybe bring out photos Write all the peoples names on the pictures because the who are they quests will follow you. ☮️💟✝️ Francine

By all means, talk to your dad about those times!! My dad passed 6 years ago at 92 and we had many talks about past times while I cooked him supper. Memories I wouldn't trade for anything. He died at home like he wanted from ok to gone in 3 days, he passed on Valentine's Day to join my mother. So give him the gift of reliving those memories with you now while he still can and bring you both joy and more sweet memories for you when he is gone!

Fun fact about the Osage Orange! (I'm probably not the first to say it, but oh well!) It was a favorite food of ice age megafauna, especially giant ground sloths and mammoths/mastodons, and it is thought that they were the osage's primary disperser. Because the fruits are so large, nothing but gravity is going to take them to new locations now that those large animals are no longer eat and "depositing" the seeds in far off locations. So the fact that you're in essence doing a mammoth's job right now is pretty cool! (: "The Trees That Miss The Mammoths" is a really cool article if anyone wants to read more. Great video as always!

I used a campground grill using fallen limbs for a wood fire to make breakfast, and supper every day for a week, for 7 people. We ate like royalty. Bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, and toast. Steak, baked potatoes, garlic bread, and corn on the cob. No electricity to keep meat refrigerated in summer in Florida. I found a way with absolutely no issues. I froze the meat completely, bought dry ice, double packaged everything and used one cooler for a freezer, and the other for a refrigerator with block ice. We did buy bag ice to add to the top as the dry ice dissipated, and as the block ice melted. I cooked meat that would go bad quickly first, and cooked meat that hold up longer like cured bacon and steak last.

My Grandma (born 1915) always waited to plant until the 10th of May. We are in the foothills in North Georgia. Also, our largest snow that I know of was March of 1993. My Grandma's sister was born the first of May (1913) and there was snow on the ground when she was born. Always listen to the old people that are around you... those old men that are at the co-op, the old ladies at the grocery store, etc. They are an encyclopedia of knowledge. The old people also used the farmers almanac and planted (and preserved, butchered, etc) by the signs.

my oldest son and I built a wood fire brick cook stove outside with a bread oven last fall. we have cooked many times on the grill this winter but waiting to use my bread oven when the snow is gone. So useful and a great powerless back up. My husband is a machinist so he built my fire box and steel cooking plate. Recreated my grandfathers cookout from when I was a kid, but added the bread oven. Maybe a use for all your left over bricks!

I have never cared for radishes but am thinking of growing them this year. I don't like raw radishes but am considering trying roasted radishes to see if that is something I might want to do regularly. Àlso want to try making radish flour (along with some other veggies flours). As short of a growth cycle as they have it would be a great use of space and time to be able to make use of those nasty little things. I think as we age we should start thinking in terms of versatility of what we grow. I'm trying to think of new uses for things I might not be crazy about or have problems with growing more than I can consume to find other possible uses for instead of being locked into thinking there is only 1 or 2 ways to process. I think you both married up well. Meg has a handsome husband who is also incredibly handy and can fix or build just about anything. Ben has a beautiful wife who is highly skilled and handy inside the home as well as able to handle anything outdoors. And they both cherish their family and each other as well as maintaining the same values. A very blessed family in or out of the apocalypse. I'd be pretty happy to find a guy that has good night vision, will do any chore requiring a ladder and knows what to do with a screwdriver in exchange for some really good cheesecake.

Dad has Flint Hills property bought as a young man. The hedge (Osage orange) from the dust bowl days bordered the south and fallowed the creak to his ponds. The sistern at the house on the hill remains to this day. When he re strung the barb wire for his cattle, he cut the windrow to post, put the wire in new. It grew back fairly quickly:) Horses will eat those hedge apples, rider alert. I spent many a preschool day taking one from my pony. One of the reasons I stopped using a bridle on him.

I'm in California, but today, Feb. 22nd is higher winds than ever before and huge rain on the way. I'm nervous for you to plant just yet because the West Coast blows east . Hopefully, you will be safe . Our weather around the country has just been severe since November. I truly pray, especially for farmers and homesteaders' families . Because you are who all of us should be, but hopefully soon.

Oh, I have those little flowers, too. And they're all going to get frozen in a bit, I'm sure. Piddling is such a good word.

We had a couple days of almost 80 in Nor Cal last week. Now we're getting storms from up north. We had a wind storm last night that brought down trees and power lines like crazy! Today, calm & sunny but only 40 degrees with predicted snow up to 3 feet on our mountain! Amazing. It's heading east to all you poor people in its path. Buggy and her dirt is adorable and hilarious all at the same time😘 When I think back to you in Cali, I'm amazed at how far you've come❤️

It is so good to see your children slogging around barefoot and getting muddy. I swear, we were all a lot healthier when we played in the dirt. Natural immunity maybe?

Oh my, you have to have a working stove to survive! Meg you are the woman! Very creative in getting things done. You are good apocalypses partners. Your family could survive most anything. I was reminded how fresh plowed dirt smelled while you were tilling. I am getting excited about my garden this year

I married my Apocalypse partner. We would never starve. He hunted and fished and dived for food. We grew our vegetables. We shopped in bulk. I loved it. Kids not so much. But I think had we lived more rural it would’ve made a big difference. He was like Ben also with fixing things. I miss him.

Bois d’Arc fun fact: their thorns can go through tires and boot soles like nobody’s business. They do make excellent fence posts, but get them shaped and cut before they’re 3 days old, or it’s like cutting concrete. The fruit is really good at deterring bugs, so throw them in your crawl space. Squirrels❤️ the fruit. Never go barefoot around them when they start getting up there.

In my old rental I was without a stove and an oven for about 9 months right in the middle of COVID time. I cooked almost everything with my roaster oven, flat griddle, and one burner electric stovetop. When we think about it, we can be very creative and find out how to feed our families.

Its so nice to see how much you and your family have grown over the years. Such a blessing to see the family all helping out and seeing Buggy help out too. I saw Daisies start to come out knowing winter isn’t over. I do look forward to spring to take out my tiller and begin planting. You’re all such great role models
