Never apologize for the state of your home…. I use to say this when people turned up unexpectedly. Then a lovely neighbor said “ never apologize for living in your home” so I never said this again…..we are here for your inspiration not to judge your home…❤️🙏

Ben I got a tip for you someone just shared with me. Instead of putting your seeds in paper towel use toilet paper…it degrades faster and the roots don’t get”stuck” and risk damage to the delicate sprouts. Also, Ive been getting peppers off of a plant I’ve had (started as an experiment) that is potted for 4 years. I bring it into my green house in the fall when it goes dormant and then just put it back out as soon as weather permits…it just keeps giving lol..give it a try! I always cut it back and make sure to keep it watered..plus do some peppers in your greenhouse..that changes the whole game in Western NC…blessings neighbor ❤️🙏

I just love your channel. Been watching for years and you guys are by far my favorite homestead channel! But today was something special. Watching Buggie help daddy plant seeds (and the cat) was priceless. That is the “why”. That’s why we all grow food, why we include children in the learning process, why we cook from scratch- to see the next generation thrive and learn life skills along the way. She helped choose the seed, prep the beds, plant the seeds and then even “helped” sprout the seeds! What an inspiring video! Buggie is the future of food!

Great Hack for starting carrot seeds. Those tiny carrot seeds take a long time to germinate, and when they do, they’re very fragile. You have to keep them constantly moist and that means checking them several times a day. If they dry out even once, you probably have to start all over. So this hack is a lifesaver for carrots. 1. Prepare your carrot beds. Make sure that the soil is soft down the full length of carrot size that you are planting. 2. In a sauce, pan, mixed together, 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, and about a cup of water over medium heat stir constantly and bring to a boil. Keep stirring until it creates a gel that is clear. Let it cool. 3. In a quart size Ziploc bag mix the gel and the carrot seeds. Be sure to label the Ziploc bag as to the variety. 4. Lay the ziplock bag, flat on top of the refrigerator and cover with a cloth or paper towel to keep it dark. 5. After a few days, start checking the bag daily for the first emergence of the tiny root. Be patient, carrots are slow to sprout. 6. Once the root has started to come out of the seed, take the Ziploc bag out to the pre-prepared garden bed. Snip off one bottom corner of the Ziploc bag, and GENTLY squeeze out a line of gelatin where you want the carrots to grow. 7. Cover the gel with a fine dusting of soil. Moisten the soil with a fine mist. I use a soaker hose on a timer or drip tap on a timer. I am easily distracted and forget to water consistently, so a timer is really worth the investment. 8. Don’t forget to label rows with the variety name. 9. If you plant a lot of carrots, late in the season, instead of harvesting them, and storing them, try this. Just before your first frost comes, leave them in the ground. Cover the carrot bed with a deep layer of mulch of straw and leaves, leaving them in the ground over the winter. The winter chill will make the carrots much much sweeter. Plus you’re not taking up space in your root cellar with the carrots. Just go out and harvest the number of carrots that you need, as you need them.

The pride your little girl will feel when you harvest is going to be priceless. Also, Im guessing her favorite thing to grow is tomatoes! FYI you can tear the paper towell and plant it with the seed. Bought asparagus crowns and planted them. In the ground 1 year and they all rotted. So I started Mary Washington from seed in flats. They all came up and they are are now 3 years old and spreading because I reseed them! Open Pollinated for the win. Only work is adding compost on top in the fall. Your mileage may vary. I have the same suggestion as Donna Mays. I have used toilet paper to chit seeds and then I planted the whole paper square once the seeds sprouted. It saved alot of work and since I had spaced the seeds out to about 4-5 per paper square they were the right spacing for me and it took away the problem of damaging the sprouted seeds.
