It seems like a lot of people here are forgetting what pride actually celebrates. Pride is about celebrating the people that were lost in the Stonewall riots and every riot and persecution the community has faced as a result of being non-heteronormative. It isn’t a celebration to celebrate being born gay or whatever, it’s a celebration that gay people and the community can openly be themselves without worrying about persecution, torture or executions, which have all happened throughout the years. There’s no straight history month or celebration because you have never suffered threats just because you were straight. You might have suffered as a straight person, but I can almost guarantee straight people didn’t have to fight for their right to be straight. People don’t walk into clubs and shoot up straight people because they’re straight, whereas there have been plenty of mass shootings in gay clubs and at gay people in general. And as a side note, just because you’re straight does not mean you can’t join in the pride festivities. I’m cis and straight and I always go to pride festivals near me with friends that are in the community, it’s not a no straight people zone, it’s a celebration that they’re alive and can live without the fear of their very existence being illegal or a target on their back.

To be fair there is an arguement that all sexualities including hetrosexuality have been represeed by the dominant groups to some level. @vampirzz9 ай бұрын
are they really just parties though? parades started out as riots and protests and now a lot of them have sexual contents since the lgbtq community is kinda inherently sexual
@JedRayner8 ай бұрын
@@vampirzz yeah, nowadays most of them are just parties. The origins and history of the Stonewall riots are certainly not forgotten, and there remains a kind of resistance element to many pride celebrations today. A lot of that resistance may be a kind of rejection of dominant cultural sentiments. In many ways, I feel what you see as borderline ‘protest’ behavior still remaining in pride celebrations is a lot of pent-up feelings of delight on a day to celebrate the hard won civil liberties that gay people have access to today… and to let loose. It’s a great way to meet people who you know will support you in equivocally, which is surprisingly hard to find in your everyday life, depending on where you live. The sexual nature of pride is often due to the intersection of kink communities, and the LGBTQ community at large. Pride parades themselves don’t inherently need to contain sexual elements, and it’s restrictive to believe that the LGBT community is purely sexual in nature. Same-sex relationships contain the same love (not only sexual love, but romantic love) that heterosexual relationships do. It is a celebration of that love. At its base, the LGBT community advocates for equal rights under the law for lesbian gay bisexual and transgender individuals. As in marriage and adoption rights. Visibility. I’ll give you this. Historically speaking, the widening of LGBTQ rights and a country tends to follow a larger, sexual liberalization and move away from sexually conservative purity culture. Perhaps that’s why you see many sexual/kink elements included in the pride, parades in your area. It’s an intersection of communities that tend to support each other, not the same community. Think ven diagram. All this coming me as a US Army vet who served in Iraq, and a straight man from the south whose wife taught me most of these terms and concepts. Open your heart, sit down and listen, and you’ll find there’s a lot to be learned about life from people you’ve never interacted with. It’s all love, man. Love is beautiful.

I’m my opinion I feel like straight people should be celebrated in pride month because we can biologically reproduce unlike gays or transgender women. But also because if you had 100 transgender women and 10 men in an island, 100 years later you will find 110 skeletons. If you put 100 women and 10 men, you will find a village or children running around 100 years later. I feel like the lgbtq community (not all of them) abuse this fact into thinking transgender women have a vagina. Which they don’t. @@CrimsonMeyit’s not really a double standard, though. Coming out as LGBTQ+ is a big deal since straight parents often do not even consider that their child could be queer, and coming out (or being outed, like I was) carries a lot of risk that announcing being straight does not. I was kicked out when I was outed. Even with parents who are supportive, every queer person has stories of being discriminated against by extended family, former friends, classmates, coworkers, and total strangers. We are more likely to be victims of assault or m*rd*r. Coming out as straight carries none of that risk whatsoever, and that’s why it comes across as self absorbed when straight people do it…not to mention that doing it is often a way of deliberately mocking queer people. It does sound as though the kid had the right spirit, so to speak, but also, it was a teachable moment that was wasted. That’s why someone said that he will be so embarrassed some day when he looks back on it…he’ll realize that folks come out as straight “ironically” in order to harm the community. I’m glad that he is an ally to his friend, and actually took the time to figure himself out. He sounds like a wholesome kid. In a perfect world, folks would be more intentional about getting to know their preferences, be more accepting of differences, and coming out as LGBTQ+ wouldn’t even need to happen in the first place, you could just date who you want to date and be who you are without it being any big deal. Unfortunately we do not live in that world.

I feel like it’s become an LGBT rite of passage to have this conversation with a cishet. I can’t name any LGBT folks, including myself, that haven’t had this conversation at least once.

I display pride flags on shirts and masks all year and really crank it up to eleven during pride month. Since I work with a bunch of cishet hmguys, this has seemingly protected me with an impenetrable protected aura of queerness, and people RARELY try to talk about such things in my presence anymore, because they know I'll check them. (I have been asked about the bathroom debate at least once, but that's literally it. When I first started this job tho I got extremely unpleasant experience of overhearing one coworker say that in his day, trans people would be locked up in mental hospitals for the rest of their lives, so "Why can't we do THAT again???" So it's a change I'm super happy about.)

Someone in one of my classes said "why is there no mens history month" and someone else said IN FULL CONFIDENCE "every month of the year is mens history month"
