You can't knock Dubas for going with Sparks over Mcelhinney. Obviously it didn't work out. But every single GM in the league would have gone with the 25 year old who was just the AHL goalie of the year and led the team to a championship over the 36 year old career backup who just had a great season but had been pretty bad for most of his career. He could only choose 1. No GM would have just cut Sparks and not given him a chance. None. That was a no brainers decision but it just didn't work out.

Matthews is +10 and is on pace for 53 goals and 107 points. Tied for 3rd in goals, 6th overall in points. He's playing pretty fucking damn good. For a team that is only +1 in goals scored over goals allowed, Matthews has been on ice for 11 more goals scored than allowed. In case you suck at math that means the team is -10 in goal differential when he's off the ice. That's a jump from +11 to -10. That's insane. He's keeping the team afloat. Him and Andersen.

@deeg8849
@deeg8849 4 жыл бұрын
typical Leaf Nation mindset. Dubas blew it. In a cap world, manging money is key. Hawks gave high contracts to Toews and Kane. Kings to Kopitar and Doughty. Pens to Crosby and Malkin (you get the idea - all these paid high dollars to 2 players to be able to build a complete team) Dubas has given high dollars to 4 players (Mathews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander) and we won't win with all this skill and speed cause they have no grit, work ethic and defensive shut down game. Plus because he's overpaid up front, he can't even get a decent back up. If he just left $500k more for a back up, we'd be in a different space. Button nails it, his philosophy ain't experience. The OHL and AHL aint no NHL.

That's because you're an idiot Mike. The OHL is a junior League aka as an amateur league. And the AHL, while being a pro League, is barely a top 5 league in the world. Both the NHL and KHL are above the AHL, and one can argue the Finnish league and Swedish league are above the AHL also. Dubas was the GM of the Marlies, but most the players on the Marlies were draft picks of the Leafs and not AHL signings. Meaning the scouts and previous GMs built the Marlies more than Dubas did. All Dubas did was hire the coach and made a few AHL signings. So basically, he had very little to no experience at all before becoming an NHL GM.

@deeg8849
@deeg8849 4 жыл бұрын
Go back even further. Lou is howling with a good looking star less team in the Island. Shanny had a proven cup winning GM and a young team on the rise with all the pieces and plenty of cap space that would need to be managed. He also had a so called wonderboy in the Marlies in Dubas for a future Management position that other teams were calling about to lure away. He also has plenty of other experienced and proven NHL management around the table in Hunter and Lemaire. But Shanny opted to go with Dubas and potential instead of proven experience. Dubas has been chomping on unproven philosophy (speed and skill, speed and skill)ever since to no avail. But look at his actions since. 1) Love John Tavares but signing him to me meant that one of the big 3 kids would have to go cause in cap world, you can't make it work. He blew that. 2) He was gifted a goaltending tandem in Anderson and McElenany (maybe the best in the league) by Lou and rather then give McElenany a lousy $400k more, Dubas was sold on Gareth Sparks and his ability to save $500k. That failed and then he repeated the same mistake in the offseason by getting Hutchinson on the cheap as well. God help Dubas if Anderson gets injured for an extended time. But more Leaf fans are stupid and will blame Babcock. 3) His handling of the big 3 contracts in Nylander, Matthews and Marner is most concerning. He wisely holds out on Nylander's unreasonable contract amount request for months and then an hour before the deadline, gives him what he wants. The team was rolling and then when an out of shape Nylander comes in, it flounders. More importantly it signals to the Mathews and Marner camps that Dubas can be had and had he was. Team Matthews goes to work right away signing a deal in January, effectively taking away Dubas's last position of negotiation strength to be able to negotiate with both Matthews and Marner at the same time in the summer. But with Matthews signed, Marner argues in the summer that he is the teams best point player and deserves riches as well. I don't blame the players. Each is still producing at an effective rate. I blame Dubas because he left nothing to work with. 4) After last years Bruin playoff loss, Rosie DiMano of the Toronto Star asked Dubas if he was still committed to his speed and skill philosophy given that they were once again out hit, out worked and out hustled and that maybe the team needed to get a bit bigger and physical. Dubas said our guys are young and I am convinced that our best players will get more physical and play bigger as they gain experience. Huh, you really think Nylander, Marner and Matthews are ever going to play bigger and more physical? Do we want them to? 5) Okay Dubas made some deals bringing in Muzzin, Barrie and others. He signed Kappy and Johson to team friendly deals and he was able to drop high contracts in Marleau and Zaitsev. But remember the cost of this. Lost draft picks, especially first round., lost Kadri (grit down the middle), players picked up on defense have no contract next year and the team hasn't enough cap space. Plus the drops of players are nothing given the deep pockets of the team. Dubas has been a disaster ala John Ferguson Jr and Gord Stellick. 6) All this Babcock has to be fired crap is just that. There is no other person in this organization who is as passionate and prepared game in and game out as Babcock. He knows what is missing but he doesn't have the pieces to make it work and the players just can't adapt to what is needed to win. Asking Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kapinen, Moore, Johson, etc to play a physical two way game for 60 minutes is just not in these players make up. It's okay to have a few of these guys because you need the scoring skill. But when its all skill, it doesn't work. So what is Babcock to do? Its not sensible in my view for him to take the heat. Here is what I would do. Hopefully Nylander continues to remain hot and put up points. Nylander and Kappy or Johson on the trading block. With this, we free up $10 million in cap space. Goal is to get Matthews a Hyman like player (hard worker, physical) to play with he and Kappy or Johson. Cost is about $3 to $4 million. Then get a similar player on defense for similar money. Spend then is $7million, freeing up $3 million for the offseason to shore up defense and to spend a bit more on a backup. Plenty of teams are looking to add offense, puck position, speed and skill and making Nylander and Kappy/Johson available does this. It also gets Dubas's hands dirty in shaking his sweet wholesome act because he would be going against his earlier word to Nylander that he wouldn't trade him. If Dubas doesn't do this and shift his philosophy and take a step back a bit on some skill to add grit, then he better make up his mind and go full tilt on his speed and skill philosophy. Because this wishy washy scenario now is kaos and on him. He is the boss. That means firing Babcock, bringing in Sheldon Keith, letting every player wheel and deal, having Anderson face 50 shots a night and get surely injured, seeing the players get injured as well cause they are taking all kinds of risks to produce offense and then getting eliminated from the first round again by a team committed to a two way game. Then we are back to the Ballard era where players all wanted to leave cause the heat was so strong from fans and media. If Dubas ain't able to handle it, then Shanny better because he started it all going with Kyle

It must start by replacing the coach IMMEDIATELY, then if they continue to flounder this year, Dubas' must go. The problem with Dubas seems clear to me: he relies on analytics for all of his decisions and doesn't realize he needs to balance that information with sound decisions based upon real world hockey decisions. I think Dubas is the perfect example of how theory & knowledge alone does NOT translate into success.

Craig Button sounds really dumb. - Wants Dubas to yell and scream about the Leafs poor play and call people out. Hayes already pointed out that from a PR perspective they probably played it correctly. Odog had to chime and and be like "dude, they can easily do that behind closed doors" before he understood - He sure didn't have much to say when they were talking about Tyson Barrie underperforming, and how much that is contributing to their start. - Also, "no experience" sounds a lot like "too young." Being a GM in multiple leagues before being a GM in the NHL = no experience? 6 years of scouting I guess counted though... - Overdrive is great, love how none of them reacted to his 'bombshell' that the Leafs won't make the playoffs. - Finally, Button suggesting that the league is still at a point where players like Matthews/Marner need more time so they can be peaking at 32 like Yzerman is obnoxious. If old man sports are his thing, he should be a bowling or darts analyst. Overdrive good. Button bad.

Dubas has got to go. When your 4th highest front line player in Nylander makes $7.9 million a year and your 3rd and 4th line grit grinder 7 players (Mikheyov, Moore, Petan, Shore, Spezza, Tiashov, Gauthier) make a combined $5.3 million between them - you got a problem. I like many of these players but there's not a gritty character get me a crowd rousing bench motivating big hit or goal amongst the lot. Also imagine being the collective 3rd and 4th line and seeing a guy like Nylander prance around the outside with his long blond locks and you all know he's making $2.6 million more then the lot of you. You don't think there would be issues in the room. Dump Dubas and Willie. Use the cap space to bring in grit and character up front and on defense. Then get a backup worthy of the fan base loyalty and pay him the extra $500k. Stop pissing around

The issue is that they chose the young inexperienced Dubas over the Hall of Famer Lamoriello. Last time I checked, the Leafs WITH Tavares, are weak entitled middle of the packers. The Islanders WITHOUT Tavares are 2nd overall in the NHL. In the NHL's #1 hockey market, hiring a rookie GM is a mistake. You think Lamoriello would've signed Nylander, Matthews and Marner to those contracts, handcuffing the team for a generation?! You think he would've traded Kadri (who's rocking in Colorado) for some undersized second-paring D named Barrie? Ultimately, this is Shanahan's fault. Again, ANOTHER rookie.
