Most vocal coaches agree that she has the best mixed voice ever. Many also believe, and I do as well, that this woman is the best singer on the planet. Just everything she does and all of the many techniques that you and vocal coaches hear and tell us mere mortals. I have been around 60 years, and have heard all those that came before her, and to me, SoHyang is the best female vocalist on the planet. I am afraid that due to her not seeking fame, that she will not get the recognition she deserves. I do thank you for your super detailed critique of her.

Somehow this video got by me! I discovered Sohyang back in May of 2021 when I was fresh out of major surgery for Crohn's disease and wondering how my life would change. I was still dopey on painkillers and feeling sorry for myself watching various music videos and saw Sohyang's name for the first time in my recommendations. A few songs later, I was smiling with a few tears rolling down my face and I felt less alone in that brief dark time.

I believe she does her own arrangements in addition to her fantastic singing. That allows her to meld her vocal and the instruments to evoke whatever atmosphere she wants. I also believe she's incorporating her faith into this presentation, with the "He" in the English part "He said" referring to God or Christ. This performance is like a sung testimony, and at least to me, seems intensely personal to her.

Her input, with the cooperation of the conductor and her accompanying musicians, all very high-level professionals, is what results in these exceptional performances. If you took the time to find and watch full episodes of these shows, you will realize that arrangements of other singers/competitors on these shows are rather pedestrian. They don't vary significantly from the original compositions. With So-Hyang's it's a whole new dimension that opens up. And, it's not just a matter of making it "different." Her arrangements are so tasteful. They enhance, tremendously. They don't detract. Like her runs. They are tasteful, exquisite, enhancing.

So here is Sohyang's epic performance of "Everyone" and an equally masterful analysis and reaction. I so enjoyed your breakdown and comments. Your comments serve as Virgil's explanation in Dante's Inferno (if we can ignore the depressive setting for now - apologies) that lends context to the experience and articulate the basis for appreciation of the work. Sohyang mentioned that this song was the hardest for her to prepare at one point. You laid out some of the reasons why the song is demanding beyond the obvious. It's also the first time I heard someone pointed out Sohyang's stiffened tongue on the word "when" during the performance. This observation again revealed your attention and focus on the execution of the performance. Sohyang vocal gift is rare and to be cherished. Yet as a performer, I truly treasure her stage as the result of her heart and soul. Also I want to mention how I loved your perspective at the beginning of the stage, illustrating the mindset of strategic vision and focus on the delivery of the total performance including staging, lighting and sound, not just about the execution of each note of the song. There, now you know what her mother in law looks like, ha, ha! Actually, So Hyang says she is her best friend in the whole wide world. Knew you would go to town and as always I learned a ton of new stuff even after having seen every single vocal coach analysis of this performance. What gets me is that all of the technical perfection is in service of the story she is telling and the feelings she wants us to experience. She really is a unique artist and I'd be super interested in your analysis of her most recent work (Love Poem, Stay and a bunch of others from the Begin Again series) which is much more restrained in arrangement but no less impactful emotionally.

The sentence she's repeating in korean (naneun neo-ui chinguya) means "I am your friend". It is indeed a reaaaaally emotional song, and I love how we can feel her emotion on her voice. So, the song is from iirc the 60s. It's very much a gospel song, though from my understanding the lyrics could be interpreted as being from the point of view of a singer showing appreciation to their audience as well as a more religious interpretation. Sohyang grew up singing gospel in church, so I'm absolutely sure that this song was difficult for her emotionally, especially given her whole life story (she survived cancer, but was left infertile, and has really dedicated her life to supporting anyone in need through her music). I don't know if you caught it, but the ending is in 4/4 while the rest of the song is in 3/4. I love the way they use that change, transforming the song from a ballad to a massive celebration. The acapella/whispered part is in the original, in case you were curious.
