Explaining things so that a layman can understand it is a talent by itself, and Jess certainly has it. I'm learning new things here myself, despite not being very talented or pre-educated in music. I also recommend The Charismatic Voice, the KZbin channel of Elizabeth Zharoff. Elizabeth is an opera singer turned vocal coach and also one of the better vocal analysts on KZbin.

Please keep in mind that she had pneumonia when she did this epic performance. I’ve had pneumonia, and I can tell you that I have no idea how she was able to stand up for long, let alone give one of the performances of her life. The doctors told her she shouldn’t sing, and she still did.

Very true, she said in an interview that she was hospitalized the night before and her doctor warned her not to speak much less perform on a live TV show for national broadcast. We must understand however that SoHyang is a woman of faith and the way she tells it, she was not going to pass up an opportunity to sing a worship song because Christ healed her from cancer and could also cure her pneumonia. SoHyang is so technically skilled that even her worst performance on a bad health month is still light-years ahead of the average pop-star's best night ever.

(Coughs, high fever, severe sputum) So she changed to falsetto because of pneumonia in the climax parts of her singing style, (instead of belting). Her pneumonia symptoms reached the most serious level when she prepared this song. So she thought it would be her last performance as a singer. I am so amazed by your analysis from the get-go, before Sohyang even sang a word. You have the most interesting discussion on vowels with your demo. Equally notable is your observation on the slow vibrato. Also your reference to Gregorian chant gave me a hearty laugh. I haven't heard that mentioned since the Humanities class in my HS senior year. Bravo. Also very astute observation on Sohyang's mix voice. She is known to have expert mastery over her mixed voice. What you characterized as a random thought to listen to her sing "unmiked" also turned out to be very relevant. Sohyang is a gospel singer who has been singing at churches for more than 20 years. It's said that her live singing carries more resonance than the recording equipment could actually capture. Nice touch on the enunciation of consonance. One of the things I admire most about her is her musicianship. She is always heavily involved in arrangements of songs she has chosen to perform and has said multiple times that she truly enjoys the collaboration with musical directors and arrangers. She also has mentioned in interviews that she truly values rehearsal and can never get enough of it. Another thing I love about her performances is that she always sings with a tremendous amount of passion and storytelling always comes first. There is not a riff or a belt that is done just because she can execute them. There is no showing off. Everything that she does serves a purpose, either to tell a story or simply to worship God’s glory. Lots of singers riff all the way to the heavens and back just because they can. Not Sohyang. So glad to hear your analysis and am excited to hear what you think of her other performances.

Hi I'm so happy you react to so Hyang I knew you were going to love her she is really quite extraordinary and she is the reason why I picked up the phone after hearing her sing Bridge Over Troubled Water at 59 years old. Here are some suggestions please react to her singing Whitney Houston's I have nothing you are going to bug out and I'm going to say it to you she sings it better than Whitney also there's a song if you want emotional to the max. from The Mask singer there's a song that you does called hug me. You can't see her because she's behind a mask but I bet you have never experienced someone's heart and soul with this kind of intensity looking at a mask it blew me away it still does to this day. Feel free to write back to me even if you don't analyze it just watch it I'm just so curious what you would think. Terrific reaction. Maybe the best I've seen. Certainly one I learn a lot from. Sohyang was suffering from pneumonia when she performed this. She did a fantastic job but her mix from Eb up to B5 is usually less effort for her. React to her performances of Arirang Alone, Lean On Me, and Everyone. With Everyone you will get a sense of her usual stamina. With all you will see her charisma and ability to connect emotionally with her audience.

OK, got all the way through and WOWOWOWOW this was incredible analysis. I am pretty sure I've seen every vocal coach reaction to this performance and this was truly next level. I'm not a singer myself but have become very interested in vocal pedagogy and for every one of your insights a lightbulb definitely went off as something I had felt but couldn't come close to explaining. The other thing I will point out is that the both the places you stopped and the concepts you explained were completely unique, many of the analyses we are used to are pretty much the same "wow, she has an incredibly well balanced mixed voice" or "she manages her transitions masterfully" but your observations were constructed like you had already seen those other analyses and just focused on the new stuff! I really hope you explore her catalog further, especially some of her recent performances which are a little more restrained but no less masterful than this one. Bravo and subscribed! @@jessicasopranonotes Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention. You caught the clarity of her tone in the opening verse even with all the air she was applying!!! That to me is one of her superpowers, she is crystal clear no matter the register or dynamic from pianissimo to fortissimo, so much so that when you compare her to others singing the same song even very good singers sound like they are singing through a wet blanket. I just knew from that comment that the rest was going to be gold. Also you aren't going to believe where the top end of her mixed voice range is lol.

Wow...you've explained in a way that I have more appreciation for Sohyang...thank you! Not only awesome vocalist, great human being as well...turned down offer from major US studio to focus on bringing joy and encouragement to her fans...not only she was sick during this performance, she battled various illnesses since. Contemplated to retire, but decided to give everything to singing until physically unable to do so... Her rendition of "Amazing Grace" was released during covid restriction to bring little bit of hopes to her fans... Check that out as well when you can...
