She's actually a classically trained soprano. She has probably the best high C you will hear outside of opera these days (high F is her highest). Effortless in every dynamic. You can find clips her performing Handel coloratura pieces if you search hard enough.

How do you know she's classically trained? Do you have a source confirming this claim?
@KajiVocals

@@CeliniacForLife She’s talked about taking classical voice lessons in her Tiktok comments. I should reiterate it as more of classically training as a soprano, because that training is far from complete.

I love form of singing. I would love to learn how to sing in a jazz style. My all time singer in the world is Ella Fitzgerald. She will be so impressed with her. Love her and she's so very young🎶🎤🎶😘💕👏🏾

She has accomplished this perfection in her youth!! She has established what took other great vocalists years to accomplished. They were in their 40s or so by the time they perfected their craft. She is in her 20s!!! She has perfected her craft at this stage of her life. She is at the top. I don't think there's anything she can do to make it better except in my opinion she can not improvise so much from here to there therefore allowing the original melody of the song to be brought to the fore a bit more. Here and there I don't here the original melody coming through because of so much improvising. But what a wonderful working of the human soul!!!

I think that hand movement is a good and powerful tool for storytelling. It’s also a good way to keep the audience engaged. I don’t know if there’s anybody who does it too much or looks awkward doing it, but I’ve never seen it as a bad thing. in fact, I think for the most part people who don’t move from would be critiqued. And I think samara Joy, moving her hands, as she should!

As the song from "All That Jazz" says "everything old is new again." Case in point, "Can't Get Out Of This Mood" is a 1942 song by Frank Loesser & Jimmy McHugh. While Samara Joy sings this song wonderfully, perhaps the most famous recording of this song was Sarah Vaughan's recording of it accompanied by George Treadwell and His All-Stars, Miles Davis (trumpet), Budd Johnson (tenor), Benny Green (trombone), Tony Scott (clarinet), Jimmy Jones (piano), Billy Taylor, Jr. (bass), J. C. Heard (drums) and Freddie Green (guitar), on Columbia records in 1950. That recording is also on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpCTdImBjqiikKs Samara Joy was the winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019. She also won the Best Jazz Performance award for her single "Tight" at the 66th Grammy Awards (2024), and Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artist awards for her album "Linger Awhile" at the 65th Grammy Awards (2023). Note that the song "Tight" was written by Betty Carter and was first released by Betty Carter in 1976. Betty Carter's live performance of this song is available on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5_MgWimqat_p80 as is Samara Joy's live performance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moq6lXyCZ9qEhMk

Great analysis. At the 17:31 ... 17:32 mark Samara Joy looks back at the piano player (I think) and he stops playing. At that point, do you think that was rehearsed that so the piano player would stop or they piano player would stop and then she would stop singing. That was a nice touch.

First off I am no professional. I have sung in choirs and done shows. Lots of times the director or the singer give a hand or nod as notify a change in key, tempo, volume or ending the song. She could have rehearsed that with the band. I only heard of Joy yesterday. I have not seen any whole song performances. I usually listen to music with and without singers so i dont get to see the signals for changes in the song. They already knew by the lyrics, it was the last sentence of the song. When she decided to end it she let them know. At 11:23 she turned around and let them know she was changing keys. That may not have been her regular band. The piano player doesnt look like the guy in the shorts that I saw yesterday that had locks. That may be why she gave such a drastic demonstration as to turn so far around to signal the band. Actually, they may have worked with her within the day or two for the first time. I will be checking her out a lot more now.

Please go and listen to Sarah Vaughan. She is doing exactly what the greats of Jazz were doing, at that time. She has also taken a lot of notes from Ella Fitzgerald. And let me also add that she is copying the phrasing of a horn, which is where the inflections and nuances are coming from. All jazz singers attempt to imitate horns, it is custom and the norm for this genre. And if not, it is supposed to be. That's how the Greats did it. If you are interested in hearing sounds of imitation of horn phrasing, please also listen to Louis Armstrong. Not only did he play the horn, as his principal instrument, but he also sung horn phrasing, which made Jazz scatting and singing more popular, in his time. He is known as the Ambassador of Jazz of America.
