Finally an honest up front answer about boat brokers! Most have commission stamped on their forehead albeit some are knowledgeable. The latter are few and far between. Two thumbs up for for honesty and integrity. Another excellent video by y'all. The Mossback Sailor.

Thanks MS. Not all brokers are terrible. But many are. I think even many brokers would agree with this. Honestly, I think this profession isn’t going to last the digital revolution. At some point people are going to demand that boats for sale have a documented history supplied by the seller. Owners are doing it for their own purposes anyway, and I can see buyers wanting that.

@@TheOKellys I think this idea is what makes an Exquisite X5 such a great choice if you can afford it. The company tracks all maintenance and does their own reselling after bringing everything back up to the best conditions possible. And you don't have to deal with a bunch of equipment sellers/manufacturers because Exquisite is your go-to contact for warranties and issues.

I bought a used Beneteau through the moorings back in2007, I had a great experience. Don't be afraid of hiring a quality yacht surveyor. They can save you a bundle of money. The the surveyor told me the pros and cons of the yacht, so we i knew what we were getting into. My diesel engine had about 4300 engine hours on it and it is still running strong today. I still have the original Genoa as a back up sail. Have enjoyed many sails and look forward to many more. Enjoyed this video, thank you!

Loved this Q&A! We live on a lake in Texas and it can get very Windy some days, we always have our eye on Windy to check the wind forecast its a great tool. Also I completely agree about going sailing with a group first this is what we have done in the past and what sparked our bug to eventually get a bigger boat to live on in the ocean.

During the many years of ownership of a family Marina / boatyard we kept a well stocked ship store. My father in the 1970’s & 1980’s was running the business. During that time in CT. he was battling with discount marine stores. He was very tuff with his customers and made no bones about the fact that he as the owner required all customers to buy their marine related items from his store. It turned out this was against the law, you cannot dictate where your customers buy . The was an Antitrust issue ! This law is most likely the same from state to state. In my fathers case the State Attorney General came after him. Make sure you as a consumer know the law and stick up for yourself ! As for not letting you hire an outside contractor ? Again know the laws of that state. Most likely you are able to hire an outside contractor if that contractor carriers the appropriate insurance. I know this because of my running the family boatyard / Marina. In many cases we as a service company / boatyard had to enter many marinas / boatyards to do service on a customers vessel hired by that customer. The marinas / boatyards would always try to stop our business from entering the yard. Because I had the proper insurance the business I as entering could not turn me away. I should caution all of you and tell you that you may need to find another facility to houses your vessel, some Marina’s / boatyard do not view this type of customer favorably .
@King_WhiteWolf
@King_WhiteWolf 4 жыл бұрын
The last part is where I think the major issue lies. Yes, you may be able to argue the law with them, but they can more than likely turn you down for housing your vessel for whatever reason they want, or for no reason, essentially making the point moot in the end. Essentially, you play ball, or go elsewhere. It's unfortunate, but hey, maybe it's not so bad if they keep quality stuff at a reasonable price anyways, and provide good housing to boot.

Hey guys great Q & A! Something that I've looked for that not many sailing channels out there do is the "how to" get started. I've seen some of your videos that kind of go into this, but nothing with detail in the thought process and prep. By this I mean, how did you start planning your finances early on, what you sold and what you did with the money to plan for long term sailing. I'm trying to get a grasp on a good $ starting point and when to take that leap! I know this is a detailed question...thought it might be a great video though. To get into the mindset that you guys had on how to take the leap both physically and financially. Thank you guys for including us in your adventures!

Sorry to hear about your eye. I had a central rental vein occlusion (CRO) also. I was about your age, training for a high altitude climb. Did not fit any of the possible risk factors. What we did surmise was the possibility of being chronically dehydrated. I’m a pilot and the constant dry air along with not continually drinking enough fluids could have been my issue. We did hear of a younger guy getting the CRO from using an inversion table and hanging upside down to release pain in his back. Avastin was used (off label)to treat the clots and had a complete reversal and was able to return to flying. Good luck and thanks for your quality production.

Well, Samsara is a good idea or name for this time...so we will just have to see how this goes. No idea if this is original thought or stolen from someone else (probably the latter) but....it isn’t really an adventure until something goes wrong. So we are on an adventure...and there is danger and an unknowable future. If it were all laid out cleanly, it would be like visiting a museum or going to the market. But it’s not. It is a mess. And in that way, it forces us...all of us...to float downstream because we were never really in charge in the first place. Can’t change the wind, so we have to adjust our sails. I do hope that whenever the headwinds ease, you get on out there and we get to share an anchorage and a sunset before the winds change again. Best to you and your crew!

You are spot on about boat yards. I had to micro manage one because I was getting hit hard on top of the pre quoted cost and what are you going to do? They have your boat on the hard. So many good questions about boat yards. Another important question is, if you are a live aboard are you allowed to stay on your boat? I bought my boat out of state. My assumption being from California and the boat yards there allowed me to stay on my boat and do my own work. Wrong! Lets just say here in the gulf coast I had to do my own work from 8-5 Monday through Friday only. Yard is closed on weekends. I couldn't stay over night. So no traveling to the boat staying 2 to 3 days and managing to get some good work in. So no work got done in the 8 months of owning a new boat. But I did travel out to micro manage some rudder work being done. That way it didn't come up higher in cost/hours than the previous job. Very glad I did, because they don't even give me (or anyone) an estimate to minimum or max hours. You are just expected to sign you agree on how ever long it takes. You don't sign, you can leave. IF you have a boat problem where you can't leave without it getting fixed. You are stuck! Needless to say. They didn't like that I came out to just sit and observe how long they actually worked on my boat. It got done magically all before lunch. lol Experience is a great teacher. Happy your eye is getting better Nick. You two have a great time in Lake Worth.

Wonderful video and Nick, great to hear your eye is doing better. When it comes to power, fuel cost is a substantial amount of your running cost plus lack of range should you opt for a yacht under 24 meters. When I was looking at power yachts, my minimum range plus 10% reserve was 3000nm @ 10kn. I had two yachts short listed that exceeded the minimum range requirement. In the end however, I have kept with a sailing yacht that has 4000nm range @ 10kn when under power with 10% reserve. This gives me both worlds with the added safety of long range should something happen to the rig.

Another great vid, thanks! Glad you enjoyed cruising while you could. International cruising will never be the same after C-19. The rules and regs/bureaucracy in the future will be formidable. Self-sufficiency and getting away from government control and bureaucracy was why many of went sailing in the first place. The amount of money cruising brings into most countries is relatively minimal and maybe outweighed by the perceived risk. Think cruising ships.

So cool you are using the Linnstrument. Quarantine tip: check out Roger Linn and his roll in modern music history. The LinnDrum was one of the best drum machines ever and has been recorded on a ton of music in the 80's. His later work on the Akai MPC line was also hugely important in several new styles of music in the 90's. You've been dancing to the beats of Roger Linn in the last 40 years more then you've ever imagined...

Quite a distance between the north western America and Scandinavia. My sea experience in the US is limited to sea trials aboard some boats in Columbia river in Portland and Puget sound just out of Seattle. Would love to go sailing in that region during summer, Washington is almost as cold and at least as wet as northern Norway during winter. The Norwegian coast can be awesome during summer, but I'd recommend foul weather gear in backup. I have a video from last autumn from a 3 day rally sailing around 68°N

@Sailing Zoe the pricing depends on the market at the time. I bought in 2015 and there was an economic slump. The boat I bought and the others had been sitting on the market for about 6 months. From the original list price to what I paid it dropped€35 000. The other benefit at the time was the price was in euros and by the time I paid in usd the euro had gone from 1,45 to 1,15 so I have another bundle there. If you are interested concentrate on the owners versions NOT the 4 cabin versions. The reason is usually families rent the owners versions and are a little more upmarket. The bottom of the barrel renters go for the 4 cabin and try and stick 10 people on the boat to make the cost per person for the rental cheaper. This leads to loads of wear and tear on the boat

Now this is a good question I'd like to see the answer to. I've been thinking about buying a powercat from the Moorings for quite some time but I only know one person who did it. They really enjoyed their boat and felt the price was fair, but at the end of the purchase period the found the repairs that had been done in Abaco were HORRIBLE. They had to shell out $74k additional to properly repair the boat in the Keys
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 4 жыл бұрын
That is very sad. Moorings bases vary in quality of work. We have heard great things about the work done on boats in Belize, but then heard both good and bad about work done in the BVI. Abacos? Perhaps this was before Hurricane Dorian? I believe in any case, the quality of work is going to depend on how much oversight you give the job. This is not just the case for Moorings, but for boat work done anywhere. Oversight is KEY!

Ableton is pretty sweet. I used to have that along with the Ableton Push. For building beats and live performance, it is better. For me, for layering and tinkering and using loops and samples, Logic is so much easier. I can build tracks in 1/10the time. You’ve got some great producers over there in the UK. Thanks for the note!

I would also add to my last comment that although most Marinas / boatyards when keeping your boat at their facility require you to sign a rental / storage contract . In the contract it may state you as the customer agree to use their repair facilities, storage etc. As I remember this holds very little weight as a contract. A business like this again can’t dictate who or what services your vessel.
