Buying A CowBoy Hat (Cheep Vs Excessive)

I'm an old guy; been wearing cowboy hats for 50 years. My first real good hat was my US National Park Ranger hat. Yeah, the Smokey Bear hat. I splurged on it when I got the job at Glacier NP in 1974. No "X" rating; it just states Premium Beaver but by God that thing is solid. I still have it but can't really wear it legally. Many hats since but I recently bought a Stetson Shasta 10X. It's the first hat that feels as solid as the Park Ranger hat. It's a $400 hat. I have heard but can't personally confirm, that after you get to 10X the returns are diminishing. All I know is that I feel like Rip Wheeler when I wear it.

What sucks is that the X rating really means nothing nowadays. One companies 10x may be another companies 100x...or Stetsons 1000000000x. Very few will tell you the material combination so it is difficult to be an informed buyer. I'll stick with Akubra until something really wows me.

Interesting. I had a Stetson 5X and it only lasted a year, this hat has already beat it 10 fold. I put it throw hell and back and it keeps on rocken, where the Stetson failed.

Love your love for hats. How I learned 6X n above is for occasion. 5X n below for work and outdoors. Great video bud. Keep on

I'm 55 and been wearing a cowboy hat all my life and winter hat is a 20x they are around 500.00 and last a few winters but you're right about the hundred x is so much better but lot more money

I sold all my 6X hats, and only have 100 and 200X hats now. Save your money people, and buy quality felts. You’ll be glad you did

Just want to point out that the X rating system is different for different brands. Some brands 10X means 100% felt, and others 100X is 100%. For goodness sake some straw hats have an X rating and do not contain any felt. Please choose a hat based on the percentage of beaver felt and not the X rating. It does not mean anything anymore. I wear my cowboy hat for riding and chores around the horse farm, I don't care what the x rating is, what I care about is how much it hurts my wallet if my horse steps on my hat.

buy an Akubra for the best value for quality bar none. Many hat guys keep Akubras for bad weather because they can take it and still look great.

But the Akubras I have seen only have 3 or 3 1/2 inch brims or they have those damn vent holes.

When you say your 6x hat fell apart what exactly do you mean? Still looks functional albeit a little dirty. I’d be curious to see what happens to a lower quality hat. How is it that it doesn’t hold up?

well what I meant is that it won't hold its shape for long. when I talk to a cowboy hat expert he said that with my life style it would make more sense to get a higher x cowboy hat because of how much stronger and long lasting it is.
