I'm a total Patrol guy, I can even see the good (cough cough) in a landcruiser. But I honestly think the Pajero is one of the most under rated vehicle on the market! comes with all the goodies at half the price! It is just harder to get the aftermarket parts! I still think it would be a GREAT budget 4x4, bang for your buck! plus old landcruisers and patrols have been done to death. Go the Paj...... dont think you will be disappointed.

Would be great to tune into a budget build series! As you mentioned, so many KZbinrs doing the opposite now, going bigger and bigger, trying to outdo each other. It becomes very unrelatable to to 99% of the audience, and turns more into a "look at me" show off build. And will be nice to see a build not influenced by sponsors, so it is not one giant advert. Keep it real, relatable, and youll find plenty of new fans!

You’re gonna be hard pressed to find an 80 or 100 series cruiser for 5k or less. 90 series Prado 3.4 petrol is the way to go. Can even supercharge them for pretty cheap. 👍

mitsubishi pajero NL I reckon they’re pretty underrated cars and a lot of people are swapping the 3.2 L into them pretty good for 3.2 L diesel and the newer Pajero some parts shared so lift and that but also coil rear end too

Few Toyota Prado and Mitsubishi Pajero that fit your criteria. Still have reliability with both vehicles and parts are relatively easy to get in case you need repairs. I can’t say seen many builds done on those vehicles. There is a some cool Prado and Pajero currently on market for price and age that you are after. Can send links of some if you like. Just my opinion on 4wd to build.

1998 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee - already has a V8, reasonably capable offroad, plenty of comfort for the family inside - plus it's something different to the usual Toyota and Nissan

Look into an NL Pajero. I owned a 1999 NL Pajero Exceed for 10 years, and to this day it's a vehicle I wish I never traded-in and still own

Gen 1 or 2 Pajero. NL Pajero would just meet the 25 Years old and they go brilliant. They are IFS & Solid rear, can get them in a diesel or 3.5L V6 Petrol (6g74) and there are parts everywhere. I've got a couple of videos showing the NL out on the tracks, Showing a QLDer around Gods Country is one and the Pajamboree video from 2022 is another.

Personally, I would go a Gen 1 pajero for that old school cool factor. I love the look of the gen 1. And attempt to find a SWB just because. 😂

@@worthy_escapes The SWB are wicked, I am spewing Aus never got the Gen 3 in the SWB although Gen 1, 2 & 4 all have it. I have a mate with both a SWB & LWB Gen 1 but neither are registered and both need a fair bit of work.

Hi Steve sounds like an awesome project. From what I what I know from my limited knowledge the Pajero's are very good and capable vehicles. They were used as recovery ehicles in the Paris to Dakar rallies, in the time period you are looking at.

Quite a few Range/Land Rovers within your criteria in both petrol and diesel in varying levels of condition. Really need to decide if you want large or small and then what suspension category you want to deal with. Ie. Leaves, coils and/or IFS. Will narrow sown your search criteria one way or another to just a few models...

You just know I'm going to tell ya to go the Gen2 Paj, bang for buck, you won't get better. Petrol models are cheap, diesel a bit dearer, reliable, super capable, and super cheap! Plenty of mods can be done to them. There's always plenty in Melbourne on Marketplace.

Sub 5K... I honestly think you'll get a Factory Turbo Diesel MK/Q patrol for that. (One of the funest fourbies you'll drive) Rust is their problem. Even an SD33 n/a would suffice. Pajero's are surprisingly overlooked and capable. GQ's, 60's and 80's series are likely still too premium. But maybe, ya never know

If you want to do hard tracks, XJ Cherokee, lots of mods available and lots of knowledge on youtube how to work on them for backyard 'non' mechanics 😂 Issues are well known with plenty of fixes around. Most of the best stuff is from the US though, so there is that. If you want a comfy tourer, NL Pajero or 95 series Prado. Better support in Aus than a jeep, both easy to work on from well known brands. Lots of interchangeable parts. Everything that could be done has been done in Aus. OR, you could throw everyone off and buy a dual cab ute. Early D22 nav, Ford Courier, Mazda Bravo, Holden Rodeo. I would say Hilux but you probably wont find one in your budget.

Can’t go wrong with GQ I have seen 2 on marketplace with that criteria this week Problem with just about anything else in that range is they’re nowhere near as capable or reliable as a GQ I’ve got 440,000km on my 4.2 petrol TI GQ and it’s mint 👌

TB45 Gu. Bullet proof engines but now tried with a lot of ks. Very capable with a lift and tyres. Easy LS swap when you're ready.

An older suzuki jimny/vitara or an older hilux. Dont get another wagon you already have one. You will struggle to find one around 5k that isnt a complete basket case. A v8 range rover classic would be cool. Personally i am sick to death of 80 series and older patrols they qre everywhere on youtube.
