I would suggest, first check the air filter is not blocked. Pull the spark plugs and check if any are black/covered in soot. Throw a new set of plugs in anyway. Buy a compression tester gauge and test the compression in each cylinder while the spark plugs are out, find a spec online but they should all read within about 10% of each other. Check the ignition timing is correct, I'm sure there would be a youtube video showing how to do it on an 80. You can pull out the injectors and have them tested. You can check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold by spraying carburetor cleaner at any hose connections or gasket joins, if the engine starts reving up you have a vacuum leak wherever you are spraying when it revs up. That's the order i would check things in, still could be a few other things but start with that.
@Australian4x4Adventures8 ай бұрын
Some great info there. I opened the airbox while it was idling and it made no difference so I ruled out air filter. I haven’t had a chance to pull anything else apart just yet. ( I’ve been cleaning up the shed to make it fit inside before I start pulling stuff apart 😂 ) This is definitely ganna be a learning curve for me. Which is exactly what I kinda want.
@touringwithtyrone49338 ай бұрын
All of the above correct but run a vacuum gauge on the engine and see where things are at with vacuum overall.

Toyota heads and LPG don’t work if you pull the rocker cover off and check valve clearance’s there’s a very good chance they will be to tight and valve seats have been eaten away….do a wet and dry compression test get an idea of overall engine condition then make your mind up from there. Another option is to pull the engine out and do a Barra conversion!!😍😍
@darylbroadfoot9278 ай бұрын
I’d be cleaning out the idle control valve. Check the Air flow sensor also. That could be making it rich (black smoke) while giving it a once over do a dry & wet compression test. Then new plugs if that returns ok. Depending how the compression test goes. You may want to do a cylinder leakage test. It will show u what’s leaking (valves, rings)
@jamieandrews32388 ай бұрын
First thing i'd do is compression test cylinders. Lpg conversion may have burnt valves. Test fuel pressure before touching injectors. And check for any air leaks(sucking in air) I like the spray ether over the intake system while it's idling. If the rpm goes up, its sucking in air
@Australian4x4Adventures8 ай бұрын
I’m upto testing the fuel pressure now

Not sure if your idling issues is the same as mine, but I recently developed a rough idling issue on my petrol 96' 80 Series Landcruiser - where previously it ran smoothly. The cause turned out to be an air hose leak between the intake pipe and engine. The leak was after the Mass Air flow (MAF) sensor. So the engine was sucking in additional air that the MAF sensor hasn't detected. After a new hose was fitted, the problem was sorted.

Check the plastic intake hoses for cracks in the pleats. Unmetered air getting in after the MAF sensor will make it run crap. Also check the O2 sensor as it'll run lean or rich if the 02 is cooked. The plugs will confirm that it's running rich which is my first guess based on black smoke

Awesome buy there mate!! I had a 105 with the 1FZ they’re a great motor and incredibly reliable. As others have said I reckon the cause of your main issue will be burnt out valves from the previous gas system. Getting the head reconditioned would fix that, plus a whole heap of replacing regular service items. Worst case scenario a good used motor can be had for under $2k. With the exhaust - try to reuse the original manifold if possible, extractors just add drone without any noticeable added power. Congrats on an incredible buy mate, can’t wait for the build series!!

Exhaust leak is high on the priority list for sure. Do these even have an OBD2 port? I’ve looked but couldn’t see one.

@@Australian4x4Adventures my 105 with the 1FZ-FE had an OBD (not OBD2) port - sometimes called a diagnostic port - in the engine bay near the airbox where the inner and outer gaurd meet. They don’t store historical codes as such, but you can connect certain sockets in the port to get dash lights to flash in a certain order to aid in diagnosing what the exact problem is when the check engine light comes on. My ABS light came on, I jumped the correct pins and my ABS light flashed 5 times then 4 times and that meant that the ABS was shagged. Hope I’ve explained myself ok and haven’t added any confusion. All the best with the build up mate, unreal that you found one for $4k!!

From another Steve with a 1fz auto, I would change plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor cause I’ve had leads that make it run rough, chuck a new fuel filter on too, also wouldn’t be a bad idea to compression test it. Being that it was on gas the valves shims may need to be done too, The ticky noise could be the timing chain or maybe the tensioner is worn.

Woo hoo! Go the 80! Mine is a 95 also with same MAF but still OBD1 not OBD2 (they went OBD2 in late 95 or 96) . Check for error codes first either way. Black smoke points to a fuel problem surely (fuel pressure reg or injectors), i have spares you could try swapping in.

First I'd do the paper clip trick on the obd box in the engine bay ( if it's a OBD1 not a OBD2 95 model., put a paperclip in te1 and e1 ports then turn the ignition to on but don't start it then count the number of flashes of the orange engine light on the dash. Every flash is a number like morse code,( 3 flashes is the number 3, 2 flashes after that is 2 that in turn is code 32) You can find the codes online and it can pinpoint some issues. It runs like you have a bad Oz sensor and maf sensor. Hope this helps.

It's making a horrible noise like a bad bearing or water pump impeller rubbing internally or something. Isolate all your accessories under the bonnet first by disconnecting all your belts (fan bent, air con belt, etc...), and then run your engine from cold again temporarily and don't let it get too hot as the water pump won't be running. It'll give you a better idea of the engine noise alone without the attached accessories, and make it easier to diagnose. Feel all your accessories rotation by hand, alternator, water pump, power steering, idlers and anything else that rotates, make sure they rotate smoothly and aren't worn. Use a large screwdriver or mechanical stethoscope to listen for rough bearing noises or strange engine noises. When re-installing belts again, do so one by one and run the engine again briefly and listen for any unusual noises. A large screwdriver to the ear or even a mechanical stethoscope (they're cheap) is a big help here as it tends to isolate other noises. Start with the water pump belt if you can as it gets coolant running through the system. It sounds like you have some strange bearing rubbing noise from the engine bay, I'd be inclined to fix those first as it's much easier and then you can concentrate on other engine leaks/noises.

@@Australian4x4Adventures Yeah for the price mate I probably would have gone along the same line although anyone that knows me knows how much I love my Pajero's. I wasn't all that excited about mine when I first bought it either, it was nice to drive, ran good and was comfy. It wasn't until I started taking it off road that I really fell in love with it. When I was looking I found a Prado for $5K and that was it, No Landcruisers, Very few Patrols but mostly Pajero's, Colorado's etc etc. I paid $3500 for my Paj and it was 8 years newer than the Prado which didn't seem to want to engage 4wd. I have now owned it for 6 years and hope never to get rid of it although I do hope one day to do a major, ground up rebuild.
