I still have my ps3 slim and refuse to get rid of it. Mostly because the fact you can’t get some older games on the newer systems, and I guess older games hit different.

This is why I keep multiple older consoles. 360 I re-thermal pasted it as well to prevent RROD. I have multiple 360's and PS3's. A lot of that content will be lost forever without those consoles.

This system is a must-have especially since Sony doesn't have some good classic PS3 titles available for purchase for the PlayStation store for the PS4 and PS5. Some good PS3 titles are Enslaved Odyssey to the West, Lollipop Chainsaw, Batman Arkham Origins, Infamous 1 & 2, Rage 1, Epic Mickey: The Power of Two, and many more. I always think it's a good idea to hold onto old games and consoles just in case later on in the future they're not available in the store anymore. The PS3 will never get old and will always have a special place in my heart as a gamer.

I started with a PS3 slim. Played it night and night. I have stacks of physical games. Then the system started turning itself off and i started getting hard drive issues. I replaced everything after trying to add new paste to the system and breaking the fan connector. To get a new system and redownload all the games, which took days to complete, after work, I am finally finished. In the back of my mind it feels like these systems will be hard to maintain. After the PSN shop closes a system failure like this would mean no more games. Finding people that you trust to repair your system is such a pain. Since the hard drives are locked to the system if your motherboard dies then your hard drive cant be read. At least that is my understanding as a novice. I am happy my new ps3 is up and running again but i feel like if this happens again it may be time to let it go. Any ideas on how to preserve the system would be appreciated. I do have multiple systems as fallbacks but is that the best i can do to preserve the downloads and game updates?

So for the original Xbox, I took out the clock battery that could be an issue, I also bought spare DVD Drives. For some of my Xbox 360's I took them apart, cleaned them, put new thermal paste on them. For the PS3, I just took them apart and cleaned them, I'm guessing you can put new paste on these as well. I just have several different versions and use an expanded hard drive so if something dies in one I can just switch the HDD out to the next one without re-downloading.

I will say this as it seems so many have issues with the Super Slim PS3. I have one and bought it brand new in 2011. It is now December 17, 2023 and it still works like a champ. I have not had any issues with it and it still looks like it did when I first bought it. No scratches to the glossy parts of the console and still plays games like it did when I first bought it. people need to stop saying that its a bad model when infact its the most reliable one. The slim Thrifter says is the better model is not. My friend has 2 of those slim PS3 models and both stopped working, while MY PS3 Super Slim continues to work to this day.

I think it comes down to the individual? Mine, the sliding door broke. It's not a mechanical door so maybe that'll be better in the long run? I'm not sure. I know my launch PS3 got yellow light of death, my PS3 Super slim broke and my regular PS3 slim has worked great for a long, long time. In fact I have 2 of those currently.

I think a lot of the reason that it's still a solid console is the fact that so many of the games are still tied to the console itself. I still use mine because there's no backwards compatibility with the games. Every year I bust out MGS4 and beat it!

Has anyone ever had free work done by the company? I bought a ps3 slim 12gb in 2014. Give or take a year. Always data corruption. I paid extra for warranty and sent it in. They claimed no work done. But about 4 months ago i found out that it magically had 250gb

I know there are some real solid & stand out games in the PS4/Xbox One gen and beyond that provide for hundreds of hours of content each... but the PS3/Xbox 360 gen had SO many marvelous games... There is almost too much to choose from, and most of them are bangers of a video game and not just shovelware. I feel that the PS2/Xbox moving into the PS3/Xbox 360 gen was the largest and most impressive jump from one generation to the next. Anyways, I highly recommend getting yourselves a PS3 or Xbox 360 with CFW and a 512gb+ sized SSD if possible. Endless fun, and lots of the online components are up and functioning with lots of players to this day. :)

I agree with you with a lot of what you said. The cool thing about the 360/PS3 generation was we got a ton of new IP and due to developer knowledge of the hardware, we got lots of sequels and games. So 4 Gears Of War games, 3 Uncharted games, 3 Dead Space, 3 Mass Effect ECT

I had to use an HDMI splitter 1 in and 2 out. No upscale, but I do render at 4K on my video converter because it looks good. But everything is captured off original PS3 hardware.

how can you make these old consoles perform like actual consoles??? everytime I hook my ps3 or Xbox 360 it always wants to update and connect to servers that dont exist anymore. can you turn all that off so it behaves like a normal disc playing console??

PS3 still gets updated from Sony. 360 is the same way, I have no issues connecting online for the most part. Now over the last couple of months the 360 online has been in maintenance here and there and so unavailable. But overall I can still play COD online ECT

Slime consoles weren't BC. The launch versions had some BC. I believe it was the 80 gig that had software emulation, which really smoothed out old games.

So for me its the opposite, I had a slim model in 2010 that lasted 5 months before it gave me the yellow light of death and i got a super slim in 2012 during a black Friday sale that is still plugged in and working to this day.

I can capture PS3 footage all day long. I have Component Cables for my PS2 that I can plug into the Multimedia Out port on the PS3. It puts out a 1080p or even 720p signal. I have a Startech USB3HDCAP device that will capture HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, S-Video, or Composite and the lag is VERY minimal, so outside of music/dance beat games and possibly racing games, the timing is close enough for games to be completely playable. And no HDCP to be seen. Nice.

I have 40 ps3 games in my collection and most aren't even shovel ware, most of the games I got now are expensive like spiderman shattered dimensions, web of shadows, metal gear solid legacy collection. whats keeping me on my ps3 is the free online since I still play call of duty on my ps3 and killzone 2. before I had the ps3 I grew up with the ps1 and ps2, ratchet and clank is still my favorite franchise of all time.

The lofty expectations for Killzone 2 were created by a trailer that they put out which was nowhere near what the game ended up being like. If it wasn’t for that I feel the expectations would have been in check. Its a really good game nonetheless i wish they’d remaster the Killzone Trilogy and put them out on PS5 & PC.

Both my PS3 consoles still work great. A "fat" 320gb and a "slim" 500gb. The latter has the sliding disc cover. I can still get some good PS3 games from a local retro store. I got the original PS3 versions of Arkham Asylum and City (having played the PS4 remasters).

Yea, that's awesome! I have Arkham Origins on PS3 and Xbox 360, luckily the disc version on Xbox 360 works on Xbox Series X and changes it to 4K.

I'm 44 now I had my PS3 for 9 years in fact it's a super slim I added one terabyte of storage I'm almost up to 100 games. From what I've seen so far the super slim is said to be the most reliable system out of the three

Black Ops 2 still has a vibrant community on the 360 since they fixed the servers and made it backwards compatible. Didn't play much of it on PS3 but I'm sure it was awesome too!

Saying that ps3 games are locked to their console and that it's impossible to emulate is just outright false. It was for a while but that isn't even close anymore. The RCPS3 emulator has 68 percent playable status and 29 percent ingame status (a ton of those games are actually still playable from start to finish with or without modifications.

I mean you can't buy a PS3 game like Metal Gear Solid 4 for any other platform than PS3. So it's locked. I'm a collector and not into emulation, but I'd assume most people watching stuff on playing a PS3 in 2023 would be into consoles. Can't say much for PC since it's not my thing, but I will always pick the true way of playing when possible.

Puppeteer is legitimately on every “hidden gem” video for PS3…… Everyone knows about it. I have it digitally, but also picked up a physical copy from the Sony store in NYC as I stopped in for a little breather from rollerblading around the city. They were having some huge clearance sales, and I got Puppeteer brand new for $3. Still have it in the plastic. I also picked up a new copy of God of War Ascension: Collectors Edition for $5, Batman: Arkham Origins for $5 and Hot Shots Golf for the Vita for $7. All new. It was a good haul, but then I had to skate around the city (and eventually on the train) with all them in tow…….

Whenever I mention Puppeteer people look at me like I'm crazy, so figured it was a good one to add in here. Right now is a great time to collect for PS3, but I think once the store closes the prices will go up

Ps3 may have been sony worst selling home console, but it still outsold the xbox 360, which still is Microsoft best selling home console.

For me I look at it as each of these companies need to be humbled at some point. The PS2 gave Sony 90+% market share. The 360 and Wii took a ton of that away and Sony was forced to really up their game and be competitive. Microsoft screwed up with the Xbox One pre-launch things, and now they've made up for it by investing in a ton of studios to make content. It's not always a bad thing to fail!

I don't personally get the appeal for the last of us being soo beloved but at the same time the game being soo beloved made sony go into the snigleplayer only direction they're in today, the reason why soo many people like the ps2 or PS3 generation more is because there was more genres of videos to play, Sony wasn't just remastering 5 year old video game hits. Or Sticking to the same ip over and over what works.

Sounds like you have some deep thoughts on Sony, and honestly it's never wrong to think for yourself. I'm not the biggest TLOU fan myself, I am more of a God Of War fan. I prefer Uncharted from Naughty Dog more of all from a personal perspective.

PS3 was the last best Sony console for me, so many IPs, free online, many creative games compared to now that graphics are the total focus and you can't jump like God of War Norse era. Getting rid of their Japan studio was the last straw for me. I don't like them now that I'm starting to like Playstation All Stars. Its like a Sony executive saw that game and said "No! We do not need nostalgia! This is horrible!" And we just get 7 IPs in use and bury the rest.

I agree with you on a lot of your points. Right now Sony is sort of in flux because their first party seems to only want to stick to the same things like God Of War, The Last Of Us, Horizon Zero ECT And back in the PS3 era they really took risks and chances. I love stuff like PS AllStars, LittleBigPlanet and even Mod Nation Racers, which is a game I never see people talk about lol

A PS5 could emulate ps3 games for sure. There is definitely enough power inside of it if Sony would just take the time to do it.

They certainly could do it, but they probably don't think it's worth it because if you emulate you have to get licenses.

Love my PS3 and a word of warning from an old gamer to the new, keep your physical media. Remasters while just a little prettier often don't play as well as the originals. Digital is silently killing the industry. I can still pick up a copy of those NES games from my childhood but will you be able to pick up those digital games from yours in twenty years? Or will your childhood only exist in KZbin videos because of some licensing deal gone bad? Buy physical media.

@@thegamethrifter no that i would not do. it has huge balancing problems and many are op. also the camera is zoomed out to much and it looks ugly because it had to be on the vita. also i dont like the power smash system. i prefer to knock them out of the stage. its an awesome fanservice game but its an awful fighting game and smash is way more refiend because sakurai spent decades to perfect it alone.

I would say the toughest thing is the HTCP stuff and the hoops you have to jump through to capture gameplay off a PS3. I have to use 1 in 2 out splitter, but has to be a certain kind, and I have to reset the capture card every time I change a game because the screen just goes completely dark.

It seems like whoever “wins” each console generation gets cocky and decides to make their next console an outrageously expensive monstrosity that does everything else first, and runs games as an afterthought. After watching Sony do it with the PS3, it was astounding to see Microsoft do the exact same thing with the Xbox One after focusing on games made the 360 dominate the PS3.

It's always the 3rd console too! N64 got cocky and stayed with cartridges and got beat by PS1. PS3 they got super cocky with, and Xbox One ruined Xbox and they might still never recover.

I'd hate to see Killzone, Resistance, etc to return as that kind of game. Given the sad state of recent AAA FPS games, Sony has a golden opportunity here. But, this isn't the Sony from the PS2/PS3 years. Lame...

Emulators aren't the same as the real thing, and many people (myself included) aren't interested in PC at all. I'm a collector, I own thousands of games and part of the fun is the hunt for games, hardware, peripherals ect Digital content you can't ever own, but I can bust out my NES that I got back in 1987 and still play all of my original games.....

@@thegamethrifter i dont collect, but i do own a lot of physical media, games for each platform that i actually like and play, bookshelves full of games, i dont hook up my old systems and play them anymore because they just dont look as good after you play an emulated version of it, gta LCS for example, anti aliasing on pc, online mode etc, you cant do these things on original hardware and even worse, most people cant even afford this stuff as prices keep increasing to unreasonable prices while youre gambling on the life expectancy of the hardware youre playing on, this is just my recommendation for people new to retro gaming, a proper introduction IMO, cheers.
