OK! You have me beat. I only have one year supply for 2 people. We try to rotate the stock it it's not easy. Some of the food stuff I have in #10 cans is very old but if you are starving it's better than nothing. Most ove the cans are 5 years old. The stuff we rotate like flower, sugar, beans, noodles and rice are in 5 gallon buckets in mylar bags. Around here caning jars and lids are as precious as the food. The garden and hunting/fishing is only viable if you can store it. All our dry goods in #10 cans just gives us a little time is all. Its something to live on while the real work starts. Most people in this country have less than 1 week of food at their home. Here in Oregon there is a state wide order to prepare for the Cascadia subduction zone 9.0 quake and tsunami. The Government has told us that it will take 5 years to restore power and bridges in our area. They say it is when and not if. Apparently the quakes are fairly regular and we are over due. That is just one scenario out of 100 LOL.
@HomesteadEngineering5 жыл бұрын
It can be a ton of work staying on top of all the gardening, canning and food rotation for sure. Sounds like your very well prepared. Hopefully you will never have to put it to the ultimate test.

@Off Grid, good for you! I'm north of you in BC (right above the Sumas, Washington border) We also garden, tried hay bale gardening for the first time this year, it was interesting..way less weeding. We watch Dutchsinse here on utube, I don't know if you've heard of him, he does earthquake forecasting and is consistent in his accuracy. I am amazed at how little prepared the people are here, for ANY emergency. We don't live off grid, but are prepared to live without power for an extended period of time. We bought solar panels and generators when they went on sale, we have a fully stocked motorhome (including full of gas, same as our vehicles), and we have 6 different ways to cook without power. I will never regret buying an antique wood cookstove! And the earthquake is just one scenario out of 100! Last year we had a winter storm that left people without power for over a week, it wasn't us, but we would have been prepared for it.

Dave, I called Mountain House directly and over the phone worked a discount and substitution just like you did for a lot less then there "on sale" price. I actually grouped my order with 2 other friends it worked out well. We did a lot of arguing for substitution prior to the phone call and then made the call with all of there, but only I spoke, or at least that was the plan. By the time we got done asking questions, working the deal, I'm sure the young lady went on a vacation for the stress we put her through; however, she was very accommodating and we were very happy for the price. That was about 2 years ago and we're discussing putting in another order. There have been times when our local military PX puts this stuff on sale or clearance and we snatch it all up, but it's mostly the pouch stuff, not the cans. Great video! Added the link to my Prepper folder.

I just checked the "on sale" price also and they want $89 for 6 packs of beef stroganoff normally? It is on sale for $56. @@greenlawnfarm5827 IDK, I only made one purchase from them about 1 year ago and it was for 270 #10 cans for about $6,300 delivered. That comes to about $2.30/serving. @HomesteadEngineering4 жыл бұрын
Steve, It’s kind of two completely different things. In my case, I just wrote a check, stacked it on the shelf and now I have an insurance policy that is non-renewable. If you go the other route, you have a lot of work to do. You have to grow the food (to be renewable), you have to harvest, clean and process all the food. You need a way to power the machine if the utility goes down. The Mountain House comes in a multitude of flavors, can you imagine what it would take to replicate that doing it all yourself. I too am interested in getting a machine and learning the process but I expect it to be a pretty big time commitment so for now, it’s on the back burner. Thanks!
@plantbasedprepper4 жыл бұрын
The problem we have had with buying bigger cans or containers of food then we use for just the 3 of us is that we waste half of it after opening because since the container is so big , we don't use it all. For example, we bought a huge container of marina sauce, bbq sauce, etc instead of the smaller ones and it grew mold even in the fridge in just a month. I have since realized that at least for us, since we want a usable pantry to rotate, we are buying the smaller cans because when we open them, all of it can be used up and we can pack those much easier if we have to bug out when SHTF. All of the big cans would be left behind if we had to take off on foot. For big families or gatherings the big cans are great but for just a couple with the kids gone, we would probably never use the #10 cans now knowing we have to use it all for just the few of us. Anyone else experience the same thing?

How long does the food keep once the can is opened?
@HomesteadEngineering4 жыл бұрын
I think the freeze dried food last about 2 weeks once opened if refrigerated.

I feel like if society took a shit long enough to need all that food, I would rather be dead. I understand others do not feel the same.
@HomesteadEngineering4 жыл бұрын
That is a decision we each have to make but understand that if your not prepared ahead of time than you have definitely made it.
@baldieman644 жыл бұрын
I thought much the same until recently but invasions, revolutions, wars, famines, economic collapses, natural disasters and plagues come along with some regularity, and whether you look at the US or places like Europe (where a longer timeline can be examined), the chances of something really bad happening are low and the chances of a couple of weeks interruption of services are low to moderate in any given year - but we can do the maths by mapping the frequency of such incidents over a period and working out how likely something similar is to happen in any given year. Even with a 0.5% chance of times getting really tough in any given year, you have a 40% chance of encountering such a situation over the course of a lifetime. The chances of core services and infrastructure going down for a week or more in any given year, are (I would suggest), a lot higher than 0.5% - especially if you live in an area prone to Earthquakes or similar natural hazards. Failing to prepare for at least a disruption in services is, I would suggest, bordering on reckless.

@@baldieman64 the is a lot of things we get from China the we e don't notice a couple of years ago the casinos were not giving the bunge cord for your players they had some problem we use a lot of things made in China.

Just did the calculation for my own country, listing plagues, famines, civil war and major external conflicts that would have caused significant hardship for unprepared people. I have included some comparatively localised events like the London plague and the Scottish potato famine but doubtless, history also fails to record others. There were 188 years in the last millennium where people in Britain faced major shortages. That's better than a 20% chance of going hungry in any given year and a near certainty of going hungry over the course of a lifetime.We are incredibly lucky to be the first generations in history to have largely avoided starvation but we can't count on it always being that way.

6 months after production vitamin c is depleted and other water soluble vitamins deplete after 1 year (this is true for capsule vitamins). What do you plan to do then?

I have no plan for that.

I only need about a months worth. I don’t know where to buy my heart medication in bulk.
@s0nnyburnett4 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't spend that much all at once, on one thing, at one time from the same place. Besides being sick of the same thing after a month (and no way to change it since it's all pre mixed and portioned) it'd be a real bummer to find out you got a problem batch or it was recalled/contaminated/etc on your $10k purchase when it's too late. Sure it was convenient and saved you some money buying it from the one site but is it really worth the risk for when it's need most?
@HomesteadEngineering4 жыл бұрын
The probability of my bulk order being contaminated is extremely low. You have to focus on what are the most likely risk. I spent only one day of my life on this and it bought me 6-8 months of food security over the next 30 years. Thanks!

Freeze dried coffee can be stored for up to 20 years. Whole beans and ground coffee can be stored for about 9 months without losing its potency and taste. May I ask how you are able to utilize all that coffee without it spoiling?

Funny, how everyone thinks you need to eat the whole pack or can, instead of using several different pack or cans to make a meal, like when we cook in our homes and businesses! A normal meal is not just mac and cheese, or a egg breakfast! I know it’s about making it easy, but that is just not how we actually cook normally! I applied to become a distributor, so the price I will pay, will a lot lower then ordering from their website.
