@@tarantulakat maybe a stupid question, but what does "true spider" means? (I'm a total spider-newbie, just following your channel 🤣 ) ...
@flareon13682 жыл бұрын
@@Beco96 With spiders there are "True Spiders" and then there are also "Mygalomorphs". Basically we are talking in scientific terms when referring to these two groups of spiders. The very basic answer to your question is that True Spiders are more or less "modern spiders" or the most recent adaptations to spiders, whereas Tarantulas and their cousins (like the Trapdoor spiders such as mouse spiders) are Mygalomorphae which are basically prehistoric spiders that haven't evolved much since several thousand to several million years ago. If you want the more complex answer, here it is: If you go down the ladder of Scientific Classifications on spiders, the differentiation between Mygalomorphs and true spiders (Araneomorphs) is going to be one of the places where the different kinds of spiders split in the ladder. To classify spiders we must go; Kingdom (animalia) phylum (arthropoda) subphylum (chelicerata) class (arachnida) order (araneae) and up to the order (araneae) this will include ALL spiders but differentiates spiders from things like scorpions, mites, and crabs which may be in the same subphylum or even the same class as spiders. Then you split the spiders once you hit the suborder and the infraorder. The suborders of spiders are the Mesothelae (A suborder comprised of mostly extinct families of spiders, with only one extant family being Liphistiidae which are native to some countries in Asia including China and Japan. These are the most primitive spiders, basically they've been around the longest hence why they've mostly come to be extinct in the modern day. The big difference between them and other spiders on a physical level is that they have a more segmented body similar to other arthropods rather than to the other spiders.) the second suborder is Opisthothelae (which comprises most spiders still around today and their ancestors) Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae are the two infraorders within the suborder of Opisthothelae, and are different from one another in a couple different ways, but mainly Mygalomorphs are simply older and more primitive than Araneomorphs. As mentioned in the simplified answer, Araneomorphs or "True spiders" are more evolved, and additionally this is the infraorder of spiders that comprises nearly every single living species of spiders we see today. Orb weavers, widows, wolf spiders, grass spiders, jumping spiders, huntsman spiders, and many many more of the spiders we are extremely familiar with are all Araneomorphs. Some of the evolutions True Spiders have include the most distinguishable characteristic of fangs that point diagonally towards one another rather than the Mygalomorphs whose fangs point straight down, (this is an "improved evolution" due to the fact that fangs that point down can only capture prey from directly under the spiders, whereas fangs that pinch can capture prey from multiple angles. Additionally it should be noted that the other primitive suborder of spiders, the Mesothelae, also have downward pointing fangs which is how we know for a fact that diagonal fangs were an evolutionary advancement) and less easily distinguishable features include that True Spiders tend to have less book lungs whereas Mygalomorphs always have two sets (four) book lungs, and that True Spiders tend to live FAR less time than Mygalomorphs. Additionally, Mygalomorphs lack any complex web weaving capabilities and their webs tend to act less as a trap and more as a "trip line" system, whereas Araneomorphs have developed the ability to weave complex web structures with fewer more intricate lines of silk that can anchor to one another and to objects which makes creating a "trap" and "trip line system" in one web possible. Tarantulas, for instance, grow so large because the messy webbing they lay down simply notifies the spider when prey is near and the shear size and strength of the spider is what helps it to take the prey down. This is actually why true spiders that do not utilize webs such as huntsman and wolf spiders are some of the largest of the Araneomorphs, with some huntsman rivaling the size of the Theraphosas (Goliath bird eaters) which is in total body mass the largest living spider species, and of course the largest tarantula and Mygalomorph. However that doesn't mean size is most important because jumping spiders can still take down prey much larger than them and are of a small size. Every kind of spiders still around today are around because they've evolved the perfect ways to survive in their own micro-ecosystem, and are an apex predator in their own habitats. It's honestly so interesting to learn about spiders! This is all significant of course because with tarantulas being the most familiar Mygalomorphs we know of, and being a common pet kept in the hobby, it is important to be able to differentiate the tarantulas from the other, non tarantula, non Mygalomorph spiders, hence the common use of the term, "True Spider"! I know this was super long but if you read all of it I really appreciate it and hope this helps!!

But after watching your videos and seeing your love and awe of spiders - you really got me feeling the same way!!! But I've actually found 2 recently and mustered up the courage to use a cup to release them back out to the wild! And I actually find them fascinating and even adorable now!! When I released 1 in particular it looked back at me almost like a "bye" before walking off 🥺 I would've never thought I would find spiders to be cute and now here we are :) Thank you Kat for sharing your love for exotic pets ❤ Keep up the amazing content and hope anyone reading this has a blessed weekend! I have a Wolf Spider with 7 legs and a nub because when she malted it didn’t grow back correctly. She lost a leg somehow and I was always scared of spiders and was going to smash her but she just wanted to limp away and I felt bad for her. I scooped her with paper and put her in a box while getting an old aquarium out. I fixed it up and put her in, something about her checking out all the old “caves” and “plants” was kind of cute. She helped me get over my fear of spiders and I wanted to give her a safe life since I didn’t want something to eat or kill her because she had an awkward waddle from only having 7 legs. She’s a very sweet buddy. When I feed her she scurries to her mealworm. The only downside is that I’ve had her for a couple years and she’s slowing down, and I find it ironic that my daughter and I are going to be genuinely sad when she passes away. To be scared of them my whole life up to that point shows just how misunderstood spiders really are. Also, her name is Cydaea. Points if anyone knows what this is from.

I know space is always a consideration, because you don't have a whole reptile room like Dayyon or Mike Tytula, but if you can eventually give the wolf spiders larger enclosures, they will use every inch you give them. They have amazing eyesight, and will spot movement from the other end of a 10 gallon (or even larger). I love watching them hunt things down.
@dldarby822 жыл бұрын
They also don't typically dig/burrow, so you can use a little less substrate. They will climb sticks, rocks, etc too, so the extra height can give you some room for vertical climbing.

They are supposed to be native in my area, but I have yet to find any. You've probably learned by now that they are nocturnal hunters with many species of wolf spider preferring pinhead crickets or 1/8inch crickets. Just fair warning, though, with shipments of pinhead crickets come the risk of receiving a cricket thief spider in with your crickets. I kept the one that came with my latest shipment lol.
