Figured I'd make a video to help some folks out there looking to buy a new or used Tacoma, these tips should work with any new car and a lot of what's said could apply to used cars as well. It covers a lot of mistakes that people make when buying cars and what to do and not to do.
I used to sell cars about a decade ago and I've seen every negotiation method from buyers under the sun, here are some tried and tested tips and methods of negotiation to get the best deal possible on your next car or truck purchase without using any underhanded tricks. This video isn't exhaustive of ALL negotiation methods you can use, but ones that seem to save me thousands on every auto purchase I've made. I'll explain how you can negotiate and what frames of mind you should use while talking to a dealer. You don't have to be a pro negotiator to use any of these suggestions.
Breakdown of my purchase for example:
2019 Toyota Tacoma Off Road - no tech package, only addons were all-weather mats and a tonneau cover.
MSRP: $38,608
Dealer add-ons: $898 (brake flasher and VIN registration)
Extended 7yr/100K bumper to bumper warranty: $4,000
Total asking: $43,506
- Dealer addons: -$898
- Costco discount: -$2,554
- Toyota Rebate: -$1,000
- Ext. Warranty Discount: -$2,000
Final sale price: $37,054, including 7yr/100K bumper to bumper, $35,054 without warranty, ~$3,600 (10%) less than MSRP.
I'm not saying I got the most insane and best deal that has ever existed, but I was able to save over $5K total (~15%) and I got every single thing I wanted from the deal.
I read all the comments, so please ask whatever comes to mind or give suggestions for future reviews!

Wow! This was a great informational video on vehicle purchasing. After being soaked on several deals in the past, I find that i may now have an upper hand in making more reasonable deals in the future! Looking back on some of the terrible deals i have made in the past, it makes me sick i fell for all the additional add-ons dealers shove down the consumer throats! Thank you!!! Subscribed!!

Double check your taxes before you buy. Taxes “Should” be based on where you live, not we’re you buy. The sales manager tried to sneak in a higher tax amount. I caught it right away, and told him. You should have seen the look on his face when he had to go back and redo the amount. That catch saved me $1800.

Now I am going to go look at it before I sign anything & will most likely take it home instead of getting delivery. But I went to 2 others dealerships & they will not match this offer. I go directly to the sales manager and tell him I sold cars and was a sales manager myself for 20 years and get my price. I know how much dealers pay and that’s 80-82% of MSRP. WHAT YOU WANT TO AVOID IS...the addendum label that’s nothing put additional profit. Extended warranty? Run from those because it’s all profit and you don’t need it for this product. They never cover the part that breaks. Interest rates can be found online so you don’t have to haggle with the finance guy. So I get the price and don’t add in dealer fees! Pure profit! Just tax and tag. The end. Not hard stuff. DONT SPLIT HAIRS IF ITS THE TRUCK YOU WANT!

I've negotiated 6 new cars in the last 15 years or so. One tip I would add is to Google the invoice amounts for the vehicle and trim level. I usually aim to give them $500-1000 more than invoice on the sale price. Either that, or I'll accept the sticker price if TTL is included.

Awesome video. Thanks for the advice. I went to a Toyota dealership looking for a 2020 TRD Sport. They had one in stock with my preferred color. MSRP $45,100. Sales manager said demand is so high for Tacoma’s that they only sell at sticker price. I find that hard to believe especially since the 2021 models are now coming out. Seems like a lot of people who have commented got a good amount off the MSRP.

Oh shit did I make a mistake? I just bought a 2020 Tacoma SR5, 3.5L V6 with navigation and running boards on July 4th. They wanted +/- $37,000. I wound up trading in my 2014 BMW 328i with 86,700 miles, no error codes, however, it needed about $10,000 worth of repairs. I traded it and got the Tacoma for just over $26,000 financed with a 2.9 interest rate. ($28,800 in the end) I’m hoping I can pay it off aggressively and maybe sell it for more than I paid. This is my first ever truck. I happy so far.

Tips 1. Always Order your vehicle, play around with the vehicle options, big saving without some options 2. Get your finance done before walking in 3. Always walk away from a bad deal 4. Never Never Never never pay sticker price 5. never trade-in your old vehicle, sale it to someone or them I know this seems hard but do you want to pay $29,800 or $41,800 4WD SR5 Double Cab V6 AT

Another tip that is discovered worked well for me is that you should have a monthly rate in which you are comfortable with spending. Understand your finances and set a number. For example, when I bought my first car I told the salesperson "look, I am only able to make a payment of $250/month (I was 22 at the time). If you can make that happen then I will take the car now, but if you cant I thank you for your time." They said no so I walked. I got a call 4 days later saying they can make it happen so I came back and bought the car. They ended up having to take $3k off the car, but I got what I wanted and the price I wanted. If they never made it happen that would have been fine with me, but they wanted the sale bad enough so they made it happen. That was a tip from an old co-worker and it worked. I havent tried it again, but I am getting ready to go back and buy a Tacoma, so I will probably try it again and see what happens.
@DirtandFire
@DirtandFire 5 жыл бұрын
Ya, that's one method that I've seen work, but be careful, because they'll usually try to add things in on other parts of the deal.
@ModernGameChangers
@ModernGameChangers 5 жыл бұрын
@@DirtandFire But that breaks the point. If I say I am only going to pay $400/month, then if they add things on it exceeds that thus I won't buy. But if they want to add things on and still keep in at my price point then I am fine with extras haha.
@ModernGameChangers
@ModernGameChangers 4 жыл бұрын
@@lifesabeach5405 Well that's a problem for someone who likes to change cars often... I am not one of those people haha. I tend to use things until they no longer can function. I just gave up my Samsung Note 4, and just traded in my 2004 Subaru. So for me, the time frame isn't an issue. The issue for me is the price, and if I can afford it. This strategy has worked for me twice and I haven't felt like I am not in a position of power.

@@ModernGameChangers Dealerships make money on the sale, extended warranty, and financing. If you tell me to get you into a 30-40k car for 300-400 dollars a month with no downpayment I can make it happen with a 5% interest rate. However, the longer you hold that loan. the more you pay for your car . A 40000 Loan for 72 months at 600 let's say will cost you 48000$. A loan for half that time will cost you 44000$, yes bigger payments but you end up paying less for the car. Toyota also has 0% interest on older last year models they need to get off the lot so you miss out on those with a loan longer than 60 months. More to it than you think. Don't fall into a trap like my parents did buying a car for 30k and paying 50k OVERALL due to a 72 month loan.... I bought my Jeep for 48k and paid it off the first year... saved 8000$ IN THE LONG RUN! I sacrificed a bit but now i have my dream car and am DEBT FREE!

Bottom line is you need to go to a high volume large Toyota dealership since they buy below invoice by buying groups of same model trucks at a time, then you simply deduct 13% off msrp and offer that for starters then work from there, least I would pay is 12% off msrp. Has worked for me in two different dealerships, once on a Tacoma TRD Offroad and once on a Toyota Matrix XRS. Small dealerships simply cannot compete with high volume large dealerships so don't bother trying.

You aren’t lying about the “add-ons”...every dealer has them and they will sometimes lie about needing to have them on every car that they sell. Last Toyota dealer I was at said every car they sell has LoJack gps tracking installed for $700. When I said I didn’t want it they said it was an unusual request and they would have to uninstall it...at the end of the deal I watched as they “uninstalled” it by just peeling off a LoJack sticker...being in car sales is a tough business. Solid tips in this video.

Yep, it's probably the same type of thing they were doing to me, the guy said "ok, we'll have it unregistered", which they're probably not going to do anyways. Dealers are getting squeezed from both ends, the factory takes as much money as they can, the people negotiate out everything. The issue is that we have this dumb law in the US that doesn't allow factories to sell direct to consumers like in every other country. I'd rather not go in and do the dance and just buy direct from Toyota if I could.

So I've recently talked to a Toyota dealer. A couple dealers actually. The first one was a wash and they refused to 1) Get me a reasonable offer on my trade 2) Get me the colour I wanted. After that I got in contact with the first dealer and said I was keeping my truck and wasn't making deals with anyone. So he asked me what it would take to get me into a new truck and I said plainly "This price minimum on my trade and this specific truck with these options and this colour. If you don't meet me there then there is no deal to be made" It's been a few days but so far the sales manager has approved it but because I'm asking for "a lot " the owner of the dealership still has to sign off on it. So we shall see next week how it turns out.

Around here, Fla, they have “bump stickers” for about $1,800. It is for pin stripes and nitrogen in tires and door protector strips. A bit much for that stuff. On hot models they even have the audacity to bump it up thousands for “market value adjustment”. I’m thinking I’ll have to go to Georgia to get a fair deal. A lot of rich people live here so they think they can charge extra. That means forget discounts.oh yea, they have a dealer fee of about $800 they want to slip in the contract (which confuses the whole issue). P.s. I would always go for safety tech packages like blind-spot monitoring and I don’t find them annoying. Finally, double check the contract price as it may not be the verbal price you shook hands on.

I wouldn't recommend that, you'll pay no less than factory MSRP. I'd look around for a year or two old version of what you're looking for. Or directly ask the sales managers to do a nationwide search so you can get a list of dealerships to call.

How do you feel about the dealer fees that are for nothing at all
@DirtandFire
@DirtandFire 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you mean by "nothing", they all certainly have a purpose - Even if that purpose is making the dealer some money for their service. The issue is whether they worked for that money. Like the destination and delivery charge is the markup on the shipping costs, it's built-in so they can get the car there and pay a mechanic to inspect it. Those are ok, the ones that are like "We're going to charge you $X amount to register your VIN with some lame service", that's something I'd call nothing and the work doesn't equal the payoff.
@Ill06Taco

@@DirtandFire thanks for the reply. I suppose I'm referring to the dealer documentation fees. In my state there is no limit for what they can charge and most dealerships are $500-$700. I suppose I could have them take this off of the MSRP if they can't remove it from the dealer invoice
@DirtandFire
@DirtandFire 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ill06Taco Oh - I have a unique insight into those since my own mother was the person responsible at her dealership for doing the documentation work. A lot of the times those are backend fees that are used to cover costs and pay backoffice workers to take all the information of the deal and input it into your state's DMV system and to basically ensure that they don't lose money on all the administrative work done to take a trade and process all the paperwork. There's usually a whole team of people you don't see in the background processing all of this stuff.

Yo, why are you telling ppl what a smart shopper should already know, research, educate, tell don't ask...the greatest negotiating leverage is to just walk away and go to another dealership because they're in abundance, customer is king. Go in with a number in mind, convey that idea, if they can't meet it, on to the next. dont waste time making friends or do that 4 Square bullshit, disarm them and lead them to your way or there's no way. As a well informed shopper you should have every number memorized, nothing should be a surprise. Intrest rates, fees, local sales tax, invoice price Vs. MRSP price, monthly payments .... plenty of car buying calculators online. If you do decide on some extras, you should know the difference before they give it to you. You should know right of way when they start selling bullshit. Its business not personal... within reason of course because its business.
