Kia Mahootian actually, it was an unnamed private investigator that went missing. C.C Tinsley did not go missing, but was in the same episode. It was the Sodder Children episode. But because Tinsley was named, we probably remembered him in place of the unnamed detective. We basically created a fictional character out of this real person. This effect is known as the Mandela Effect, and other known examples are the Bearenstain vs. Bearenstein Bears, and Froot Loops vs. Fruit Loops.

As for selling the stolen art...In a situation like this, I would imagine that the art has already been "sold" before the heist. The buyer places an order with the thieves who then fill the order by robbing the museum. This could also explain why certain more valuable pieces were left behind. They weren't on the list of items wanted by the buyer.

About Abath not remembering the man he had let in one day before the heist: They asked Abath about it 15 YEARS LATER, not immediatly after the heist. And it turns out it was an innocent meeting, the man was confirmed to be the security manager of the museum. So they probably talked about it and and got it cleared at the time, but later it came out again and Abath couldn't remember the name.

To answer the question about what happens to all these priceless stolen paintings (since obv they can't be just sold on) - apparently many of them trickle down and end up in the hands of Italian mafia bosses. It's something to do with a loophole in Italian law which means that if you can donate or return something of value to the public, then your jail sentence is shortened - so basically big crime bosses steal these artworks as a sort of insurance so that if they ever get arrested they can get their sentence cut by almost half. There's a fantastic documentary about it on BBC iplayer (if you're in the UK) called "Stealing Van Gogh", makes for a really interesting watch.

Scott Velez Most likely it’s because only the people who are making the deal know where the art will go, and even then it’s possible that the trail can go could, but cash is easier to track because it’s all marked and recorded somewhere.

@@scottvelez3154 Not really, all you have to do is search around the underground art auctions and unload it, none of the people involved in those will display the painting publicly anyway and most household or office visitors would think it is simply a high end replica. Granted it's harder to unload than other things and you couldn't use a typical fence, but as a prearranged transaction? Get your own guys to move it and it never gets seen publicly anyway, what is there to trace? In fact most of the art still missing from Nazi looting in WWII is suspected to be in private hands, but it's unlikely anyone will come forward with it.

This is one of my favorite museums in the world. Part of what makes it so interesting is that Isabella stipulated in her will that everything be laid out exactly as she designed it because she wanted people to engage with her art as she did and not feel like it was a sterile museum environment. The empty frames from the paintings are just on the walls empty. It's really sad. Also if your name is Isabella you get free admission to the museum for life.

People always expect so much out of witnesses. Like, if I were to describe my own mother, I would probably only be able to help you out with her hair and eyes, cause how does one even describe a face well? If you are just glancing at someone, you aren’t going to notice their especially narrow nose or their eyebrow shape.

Especially in crisis situations. People tend not to remember details, or they're not good at descriptions. I couldn't say whether someone on the street is 5'5" or 6", how much they weigh or how old they are..Interrogation and memory recovery techniques weren't as developed in the 1990s.

Some inside info: not only did they steal precious Rembrandts, among them was his *ONLY SEASCAPE*, which is why it was so valuable. Also, Isabella Stuart Gardner was a fascinating woman who was very particular about the placement of the paintings, which are essentially placed in her mansion, so the museum is super unique. She left a stipulation that if they moved ANYTHING from where she put it originally, all the art must be donated to Harvard. That means that even when you visit today, the empty frames from the stolen pictures are still hanging on the walls where the paintings were cut out of them.

The director of security Anthony Amore actually did a talk at my school and he said Isabella Stewart Gardner never wanted the setup in the museum to change so they still have the empty spaces on the walls where the paintings should be and will hopefully one day be returned. He also wrote a book on this called Stealing Rembrandts for anyone who is interested.

Amelia Hagberg there are some cool videos with noises I can’t explain. A start is I think Cj faison in Eleanor woods I think. It’s supposedly haunted due to witches/satanist and stealing a mother’s baby and running in and she chased them and neither came out. The guy is kinda wimpy and runs out every time but with the symbols and noises That sound like talking through the wind next to them and one video with him and his limo driver you hear distinct running right up on top of them and it gave me chills to recall it. And when they turn with camera yelling nothings there behind them where it should be from the sound of footsteps. Crazy stuff happens in the woods! There’s also random people in the woods in these videos that start to follow people on adventures, possibly killers, witchcraft people, or other adventurers hiding or being oblivious. Either way try to explain some of the stuff you see in the woods in real life and videos!

They weren’t just stealing from the rich, Isabella was a woman who traveled and become friendly with artist but was fascinated with art, her entire life was dedicated to it. So much so that before she died she said if anybody moved around the paintings they would all be donated to a local college which is why the frames in which the art was stolen are still empty to this day. My mom worked there a couple years after the heist and our family goes there all the time. This might have to be my favourite episode yet ;)

Isabella Stewart Gardner wasn't just some "rich person" who deserved to get robbed. She was a woman who spent most of her life collecting beautiful art pieces and then built this museum after her husband died to show it to the world. She could have just hung them up in her house but instead she built the museum and even hosted many different artists and performers, she gave some artists a room to do their art and she gave people the opportunity to perform in front of guests. Before she died in 1924, she requested that nothing about her collection change because she loved it so much. Every art piece that is there, she collected herself while she was alive. The robbers weren't the good guys, they stole precious art pieces that a women loved and wanted the world to see.

Never been to an expensive museum, most for a ticket I've ever seen is $10-$15 which is the same as going to a movie. However, some museums trick people into paying, like the Met is a suggested $25 for admission, but you don't have to pay anything to get in, which a lot of people don't realize. This is because they are given a lot of grant money and the amount of traffic they get is unreal so they don't really need to charge a $25 admission, that's unreasonable. Most little museums though need to charge something to pay they're staff, keep the lights on etc. I do wish it was like the UK though, where the museums (at least the major ones) are free. But that would mean actually taxing our 1%ers properly.

I agree for the most part but poor people often can't afford to go to movies either, especially in a household of several people, especially in a region that's in a rent/wage/employment crisis. $10-15 per person x 4 people is not affordable, and the museums are often not accessible to people with younger kids, so that brings up childcare... I'm not disagreeing with the spirit of what you're saying, just pointing out that it's not realistic for most really poor families to visit museums as middle class people do We do have a library cultural pass system here which is super cool. But there are still significant barriers, especially to people outside the transit area (like where I live). Museums are pretty much totally off my radar to be honest. Sucks

I work as a security guard at an art museum. We are pretty much aware that we exist for insurance reasons and to keep people from opening drinks in the galleries. I have never been trained on what to do if someone tries to steal anything (other than call the police) because it just doesn't happen. It is a very boring job.

Usually, I'm all for getting behind the "Steal From the Rich" sentiment, but I tend to feel differently when it comes to historical pieces of art that were placed in a public venue for the purpose of educating and entertaining the masses. Because right now those paintings really are stuffed in a warehouse or hanging in some filthy rich criminal's home rather being enjoyed by the general public. It's true that this crime is not anywhere near the murders and kidnappings that are usually covered on this show, but that doesn't mean that we should be cheering on the robbers.

Thing to remember is that those historical museums are not so innocent.. plenty of art was stolen from people before sold to those museums to begin with. They don't hold those for historical significance, it is so they can sell tickets pr garner fundraising.. and many display pieces are fakes.

Carey Roberts no. They are the real art pieces. Why do you think there is a sound that goes off if you get to close? Art pieces in museums are over 100 years old if isn’t part of a modern art gallery. Oils from peoples hands can ruin varnishes and the painting. Art museums also have an artwork storage. Just like any other museum. The pieces that get sold are usually ones of people of this century, not ancient artists.

This is such an interesting case. The security guard was definitely a person of interest, particularly because of the way he was restrained. Both guards were in the basement but separated and Abarth was covered in an excessive amount of duct tape. Was basically around his entire head. Another theory is that the paintings were stolen by the Mafia. It wasn't uncommon to negotiate lesser sentences in exchanged for stolen artwork to be returned. This is supported by the fact they took the painting out of the frames. An experienced art theif would be a fool to risk damage to the art by cutting it out of the frame. And it took them additional time to remove them. Another theory states that the theifs were after a specific list that was given to them by someone that wanted art for their collection. This could be why they missed some more expensive pieces and why they returned to several rooms. I also wouldn't consider it a victimless crime neccesarilly. One of the paintings they stole was the only painting of the sea Rembrandt ever painted. It's a shame that it is no longer possible to see it in person.

Kitty Katz that would be a really good video but unfortunately, they usually go to the places which they’re investigating and alcatraz got pulled down years ago because of the rising sea levels because it was built on an island. It was too prone to flooding and was dangerous, so it was closed down

Nothing is ever as it seems The prison is still intact and there are guided tours you can take there so I think it would be doable for them. It's also supposedly haunted by the past prisoners so it could be a cool episode

They line up buyers beforehand. The face value of the painting doesn't matter. What matters is how much the buyer is willing to pay. This was probably a buyer who is very interested in only Rembrandt and willing to pay far more than face value. Same thing goes with the gilded filial eagle.

The more expensive art would be even hotter and more people would know it was stole so it would be harder to get away with steal wht you can make out with get greedy and you risk it all

The art was not bought at face value. It could never be, simply because it's too hot, too well-known. So the risk of getting caught with it is much higher, which depresses the face value of it. People kill and rob for a hell of a lot less than a few million dollars. These thieves robbed $500 million face value but probably made a cool $10 to $20 million from their buyer(s), or probably even less. That's still a very nice (tax-free) pay day and worth all the trouble to them.
