Pill Cosby I'm an atheist and we celebrate christmas at my house not really because it's american tradition (but yes I live in america) but because its like you don't really have to make it about religion, ya know what i mean? like even though we aren't religious we can still enjoy doing christmasy stuff with family like decorating, putting up the tree, giving gifts, christmas dinner, etc and I feel like in other holidays there aren't that many activities to do so people that aren't part of that religion would have no interest in participating in that stuff...maybe I'm wrong those are just my thoughts
@TheTadpoie9 жыл бұрын
Skel etor A lot of Christmas traditions were bastardized from Pagan and other holidays, so celebrate all you want. :D And being Christian living in a Christian household for the majority of my life, being an actual Christian hasn't been apart of Christmas pretty much ever. Im not sure about American mistletoe, but in europe, only the berries are poisonous. The leaves and stems are made in to a tea and its been used as a cancer treatment for a very long time. My family drink it all year long, especially in winter and it has a kind of sweet/spicy flavour like ginger.
@dasaunmcclinton689 жыл бұрын
Saor Beatha Well, in America, we use it only for decorative purposes, but if someone were to eat something off of the mistletoe, it would be the berries. I didn't know the leaves could be used for tea though. I'll have to try that.

Christmas wasn't originally Christian. Most of the Christmas traditions people use are actually from the Dutch holiday "Sinter Klaas" which is where the name "Santa Claus" came from. Christians adopted the traditions to celebrate the birth of Jesus, even though back then it was accepted that the date of Jesus' birth was in April. Just a little bit of Christmas knowledge for ya 😉
@georgia-louisecampbell575410 жыл бұрын
Actually it was PAGEN festival adopted by the Christians... The Dutch part you are referring to is when a Dutch (rich) man felt bad for all the poor children who didn't have anything to open in Christmas Day so he bought gifts and put them down the children's chimney! Good try though..xx

So you're telling me a couple 30 something year olds have NEVER had their friends explain what happens during Christmas and what the meaning is behind it all? The early early mornings,When the moon is still out & the world is silent,But these tiny fairy lights twinkle in the trees. It's sweater weather! & a time when people are more obliging to step out of their bubbles,& go onto the streets. To see those lost little kids faces light up with resplendence,& everything just seems more hopeful. It's this final enclose to the year,To let go of the ugliness we clutch onto within ourselves,& just strive to do better & be better. Christmas season is always the refreshment I need. This was adorable. I'm not religious, but still celebrate Christmas for the family and friends. Also, Reform Jews have a much more liberal mindset about others around them as well as their own culture. I'm not Jewish, but I always support Reform Jews who make up most of the USA's Jewish population. They are open to the LGBT community, and allow women and men to all sit together as equals. They also have women Rabbis! Reform Jews need more love and respect. They are in my opinion, one of the most caring and open minded of religious faiths. Whether you believe in religion or not.

The Muslims had the tree, the presents and santa claus....they just bypassed the whole Jesus thing. So if the Jewish people want a tree with ornaments and presents I say go for it. It's a pagan ritual to begin with anyhow. Early Christians were very good at co-opting other practices into their own. :)

Did you know he was fake and keep your mouth shut to others or what? Thanks!!

Also Happy Chanukkah!

1. I actually love Christmas movies! They are pretty well made and they are on for like evry channel so I live with it. 2. I celebrate Christmas so I get presents and stuff. My family just likes how festive it is and we just ignoe the whole religious part of it. We just couldn't get a tree which is sad. 3. I believed in him for a while because of my festive family. But I realized it sooner or later. I. My brother started recording it and saw my mom and dad putting presents by our fireplace. They even threw this glittery stuff everywhere for special effects. I wasn't dissapointed at all. I assumed a very obese man, has a flying sled, gives kids stuff, and travels the world on one night was a myth. I found it out when I was serching how much he had to pay for all those brand toys... Thanks for being super respectful!!! I am Jewish and never did Christmas. How I explain Christmas is a old man who has been living for centuries comes down your chimney and puts presents under a tree. You drink eggs mixed with alcohol open presents and eat alot. How I explain Hannukah. You can watch movies when ever you want you always spend time with the family and its a warm feeling. The food is on point , you get money and presents and play Dreidel with your family for Hanukkah Gelt. I am so proud to be Jewish lol

Catholics make up 1/2 of the Christian population and attend a special Mass held on Christmas Day (if they're active in their religion). And in the US, most of us just had turkey on Thanksgiving Day on the 3rd Thursday in November, so we like to switch it up by having ham for xmas (although many people do have turkey or both and other meats...which goes for Thanksgiving, too).
@jareddavies169910 жыл бұрын
***** Makes sense I suppose, didn't think about Thanksgiving. Personally, I would still have Turkey as we only tend to have it on Xmas, so once a year. Can I ask, on Xmas, do you eat your food with vegetables such as sprouts, carrots, peas, along with potatoes etc. or, like Thanksgiving, Pumpkin Pie etc.?
@GoddessFourWinds10 жыл бұрын
Jared Davies It's basically like Thanksgiving all over, again. With stuffing (cornbread or rice, generally, depending upon where you live), mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, candied yams, a variety of pies (pumpkin, pecan and apple are favorites)...and whatever other dishes that are traditional within your family. The foods I named seem to be what everyone starts with, adding whatever else to the menu (like peas or carrots or a green salad, if someone wants that or enchiladas, if you want to go more ethnic). I've lived in a few places in the US, and that's been my experience, anyway. :)

Um... with all the Christmas themed movies that comes out every year (and re-runs every year), how can you not know about Christmas Celebration? It would be one thing if they had to describe Christmas in Scandinavia or Japan. I'm from Scandinavia myself and we don't celebrate anywhere close as the Americans and I still know a lot about it. Btw, you should have them try doing a Lucia celebration. That would be funny.

lol Christmas isn't even a true Christian holiday. Many aspects of it are of pagan origin or are just accepted long-standing myths. The list of evidence for that is really really long, but some pointers: (1) It never says in the Bible that the birth of Christ was on Dec. 25th. What is does say in the Bible however (Jesus speaking about the fall of Jerusalem): "But pray that your flight be NOT in winter, neither on the Sabbathday.--Matt 24:20". So it couldn't have been in the month of December. (2) There is no mention made in the Bible of anyone ever celebrating it-- in fact the Bible advises AGAINST the holiday: "Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, O house of Israel. Thus says Yahweh: "Do not learn the way of the heathen; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers so that it will not topple. --Jeremiah 10:1-4" (3) The day that Christmas is celebrated actually from the celebration of the god of saturn--a terrible Roman week-long holiday in which innocents were used for pleasure and then slaughtered. In an attempt to get rid of the holiday or lessen the amount of celebration, Christian leaders made the birth of Christ set to the 25th [the year of Christ's birth was later set by Dionysius Exiguus]. It only discouraged Romans and other celebrators minimally so they later added customs from other religions to further their goal of stopping Saturnalia. (4) All practices observed on Christmas today came later as a result of many pagan beliefs: a) the tree: worshippers of Asheira were convinced to join the new observance of the 25th by the Church who sanctioned “Christmas Trees” to appeal to their tree/forrest worship. b) mistletoe: a result of Druid beliefs being incorporated to encourage them to also join in on the 25th. c) presents: An old Roman observance that would later hitch a ride on the holiday via the Church through Saint Nicholas. d) santa: started from Saint Nicholas, spread all over the world, commercialized and refined by cooperations into what he is today.

So what else to Americans have fro Christmas dinner? We have things like Brussels sprouts,sometimes haggis (I'm Scottish), pigs in blankets and stuff like that traditionally.

This was actually pretty funny! Christmas takes many forms. Christians celebrate it as the birth of Jesus because they believe He was God's only son sent down to Earth to free us from our sins. The commercial version is about giving gifts to the ones you love and celebrate being a part of a family. Even if you are not really related by blood, you still celebrate with others the season of giving. There are many stories that come from how different countries celebrate, but the general US holiday consists of a Christmas tree decorated with lights and ornaments and the gifts you get for the ones important to you piled under them.

Wow my christmas isn't like that at all! We sleep in our normal pyjamas, we wake up and we don't give each other presents, we have a small fake tree, but the tree is there all winter just for decoration. And we just have a normal day, and eat a normal dinner. When i was little my family got together and talked about how lucky we are to live in a house, with family and that we are happy. I always learned that christmas was not only about jesus, but also to think about what we have, and how lucky we ( speaking for me and my family) are, even though that my mother is in a wheelchair, and bad things happen to our family, we still make the best of it.

I always thought he was born 24th. I'm not a jew, I'm a protestant... well batised protestant. I think it's because in my country, which is Norway, we open our presents on Christmas eve and I didn't think of "eve" as the night before the birth of Christ. I thought the present day was the day he was born. Anyway... I actually prefer the way we do it. We don't do it in the morning... we have a big family dinner, with dessert and stuff, and people with kids often hold hands and dance around the Christmas tree (I don't do this), and then we sit down for cakes and stuff while one person reads who the gift is for and we watch that person open it. So you can't just be grabby and open all your gifts in like five minutes. You need to wait your turn. We also eat out own traditional stuff. Nothing American about that at all. LOL :D

Are these explanations strange because these people don't experience Christmas in a full on way, or do Americans celebrate it differently to the UK? Pretty much everyone I know eats turkey as the main Christmas meat and the religious people normally go to church the night before (referred to as midnight mass despite often starting hours before midnight). In Germany, people eat goose and that also used to be the tradition in the UK, but people largely switched 100+ years ago because goose is so expensive.

Less upset or sarcastic than truly not having the knowledge. True, if you pay any attention to pop culture, and listen to Xmas songs, which are dang hard to avoid, you should know the fictional names of the fictional animals owned by the fictional Santa Claus. But if you have never been to Christian friends' houses during Xmas, and you don't celebrate it yourself, you'd have to take a wild guess at what goes on at peoples' homes , unless you grab your information from movies or TV shows. Hard to believe that there might be people who have limited knowledge of your culture when your culture dominates the society, but it's quite possible.

Love it! I also just watched Christians Explain Hanukkah. Good times in both. As with the other video, the right answers were in there sort of shared among the group. Glad you did this pair of videos, Buzzfeed. One doesn't necessarily learn about traditions and celebrations outside one's home culture. I love to! Interesting, historical (love lore), entertaining, endearing. Again, than you for posting, Buzzfeed!

This is kind of offensive to me as a Christian. Their kind of just describing the stuff they see in commercials.

did you completely miss the fact that they're Jewish???? They don't practice Christianity, so they shouldn't have to follow Christian tradition. How much do you actually know about Judaism, other than Hanukkah?

This video reminds me of something when I was a child, the first time I knew Christmas. I am Chinese, we didn't celebrate Christmas. At that time I was only 5 years old. My father brought me a Christmas songs tape from US. A song impressed me a lot so I repeated it many times. Her name was "We wish you a merry Christmas". I thought this song was so beautiful. Then I asked my father: "Dad, what is Christmas?" "It is a holiday people give best wishes to others, say Merry Christmas, and Santa would come to your house and give present to children." "Wow! That is a great holiday! I want give best wishes and I want presents!" "Oh no, we Chinese don't celebrate Christmas, it is a holiday only for Christians." Actually I don't care his last words. In Christmas Eve I wrote a note which wrote "I want to have a toy train. Santa Claus, Merry Christmas!" with full expect then I put the note on my table. Indeed, I found nothing when I woke up. I was so disappointed and cried out but my parents smile when they know the reason. They thought I was childish, However, I thought Christmas was for all people and Merry Christmas is for people to give best wishes, loves and kind to others, just like Santa, until now. Now I am 24 but this story I never forget because my parents always repeat it. And I know many people in the world don't celebrate Christmas like us. But I always listen to Christmas songs and said "Merry Christmas" to others on Christmas Day. No matter what their color, language, religious, nationality. Frankly speaking, it is good to be a child sometimes, but it was all memory. With more tolerance and understanding, I am sure our world would become a beautiful place for us all.

This is one of the reason I hate America. Christmas is not about some imaginary grandpa, you getting gifts and eating until you pass out! Christmas is the celebration of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, but I guess modern society cant handle a holiday that doesnt have a me,me,me mentality about it, because 90% of people are unbelievable narcissists and have to have their ego stroked at least once a year.

Christmas is what we make it and not everyone is religious. But that doesn't mean that it's not a beautiful holiday. You may hate Santa Clause but to us, believing in Santa was magic and I Love that I believed in him as a child. We may get presents but we spend time picking out the perfect gifts for our family and friends as well. Speaking of family, we use Christmas to spent quality time with our family doing fun things like putting up the Christmas tree, making gingerbread houses, and having a family dinner. I love Christmas but I'm not religious. I'm sorry it's not the traditional holiday that you want it to be but things change and I love that it did. So get over it.

You are missing my point. I love that Christmas is a holiday meant for family. What I have problem with is people who only like and celebrate Christmas because they get gifts but dont even know the point of it. They dont even know why its called Christmas. Thats what bothers me.

I'm not christian and I celebrate Christmas. Has nothing to do with christ and everything to do with spending time with family and buying presents.

Christmas existed far before Christ came along. It started out with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, which was basically a week of The Purge that culminated in human sacrifice. When the Christians came along, they managed to convert a load of pagans by promising they could still celebrate Saturnalia if they were Christian, so to add a Jesus-y spin on things, they declared that Jesus' birthday was the last day of Saturnalia (which we now know couldn't be possible, but I digress). Most (if not all) Christmas traditions came from the practices of various pagan festivals of midwinter. For example, pagans had been decorating trees for ages, so Christians were like, "Ah, yes, we decorate trees too, aren't we so inviting?" Regarding mistletoe kisses, Druidic rituals used to poison sacrificial victims with mistletoe (in the same way that god Balder was killed), and so kissing under mistletoe combines the sexual freedom of Saturnalia with the significance of the mistletoe. TL;DR: Most every European denomination had some sort of festival around the winter solstice, so Christians, in an effort to appear more inviting to encourage conversion, appropriated various customs from them, and declared that it was all in the name of Jesus' birth.

***** It doesn't matter what race they were, my friend, because we're discussing religion here. My point is as follows: you're telling this dude he's bad for only celebrating some parts of Christmas. I'm telling you that's hypocritical because Christmas was created by people who only celebrated some parts of the holidays of other religions. That's all.

I'm Jewish, but my friends growing up were Christian and I had fun doing Christmas and Easter stuff with them. It is weird when people say Merry Christmas to me when I'm paying for stuff at a store. I usually just say "thanks" or something because it's strange for me to say "merry Christmas"

How is it condescending? Christmas just isn't a part of their culture, so they don't happen to know what it's about. December doesn't revolve around Christmas for everyone.

zeke1220 Can I ask, do you come to videos like this specifically to tell religious people that they're mentally ill (and so do your part to perpetuate the mental illness stigma) or what?

zeke1220 That's fair, but taking time out of your day to call religious people 'mentally ill'? Come on, if you're going to be Atheist, don't be the 'Self-Righteous' Atheist'. Respect works both ways.
