Very good explanation and demonstration. I do have one question about this kick: why sweep backwards instead of forwards? A forward sweep is less telegraphic and doesn’t require turning one’s back on the opponent.

What am I aiming for? I've seen that if it's a closed position, I can get the back of opp's knees and that works. If I go for the shins, though, (in an open position) there's too much weight there to sweep anybody.

Is this practical for an MMA scenario? I've seen multiple videos on sweep kicks and very few were performed on a partner. It doesn't look like you can generate enough leverage to knock someone off of their feet reliably. You can certainly stagger their stance, and displace their lead foot, but it looks like the recovery time is way too long (even if you are able to knock your opponent off of their feet.) Ultimately, it seems less effective than a step-in takedown. The only use I can see is countering a medium/high kick. I'm trying to develope a style that centers mainly around kicks, which is why I was interested in the sweep kick
