If you haven't tried it out, have a look at Blue Cat's MB7 plugin. It does something very similar without having to route to a different insert!

I use BX Solo on almost every Track when chopping samples to separate M/S or L/R. It's a stripped down version of BX Control and it's freeware.

How mono-compatible is this? Is there a noticeable drop in level and mix integrity when the output from the mix-buss is switched to mono?

The correlation meter, bottom right on the bx control measures mono compatibility. When the signal is 0 to+1 that's good, 0 to -1 is incompatible. Judging by the meter, I think his pad sound would screw up in mono!

Thanks for the video! Would it be possible to route the S channel to a stereo hardware compressor, and the M channel to a mono hardware compressor using the bx control? In the S channel it's simple. I just use an I/O plugin, outputs 3-4 to the stereo comp. But can you route the M channel to output 5 only (not 5-6)? I work in Logic 9 and unfortunately the M channel routes to 5-6, leaving me with the mono compressor track panned to the left.

Absolutly , this is the way to do it ... so to do so , simply duplicate the track , on one track you solo the M and sent it to the mono HW and the orther tarck solo the S and send it to the Stereo HW If the mono signal is in output 5 just link this output to your HW , when the signal gets back you record the input 5 for exemple in a mono track in Logic (i don't know logic at all ) ..
