Hi I hope you enjoy your new car, if you are thinking of charging it off grid you will need a big solar system. For a 7 to 10 KW charge at home you will need a lot of panels. It may be worth thinking about the tdi land rover as a second car and then look into bio diesel. All the best Jon

:) My 2nd hand Atto 3 arrived yesterday. It's replacing my 20 year old Holden Astra. I bought it, not just as a daily drive but to power my off grid permanent camp (caravan on blocks on 152 acres) and long road trips. I'll be charging it with roof top solar, slowly, or in an emergency, there is a fast charge point 500 metres down the road. The tech is mind blowing.

@@jjjnettie I’d be really curious about your solar charging of this. If you could email me that would be awesome.

@UKUrbanPrepper I have a very small, 2.5kwh solar system on my house (in Australia) My camp-site is 74km away, so I have plenty of power for a return journey and power lights and fridge at camp.

Takes a deep intake of breath...... Prepare for the worst, expect the best. So off the bat, one does what one wishes, but prepares with contingencies. Has the EV owner truly prepared for what might come? We here are preppers. We look at mundane things and we fit them into our way of life. But they HAVE to fit into our life! Its ok living on a farm in Bugout Villas, as I do, but my life still goes on. We go to the shops, the theatres, pubs, holidays, etc etc etc, and we dont actually thing that IT will happen today. So I buy normal comfy shoes. A fancy hat (Ana ?), new pets, new tellys, new kitchens, new homes and... New cars. Its up to the lifestyle of that individual prepper that makes that personal choice and not his friends. So... kudos to you on your personal choice. Im not going to poo poo it, but I will list a few things that us here as preppers might need to consider. Charging... You'll need enough battery storage at home to accomodate its use and the homes use if the grid goes down. This means maybe TWO powerwall type batteries installed. Both need charging from your power input of choice (for me thats solar) and it has to be large enough to accomodate the winter requirements if solar or the summer requirements if wind or hydro. Curtis stone has done just that. His channel shows his shortfalls in his offgrid situation. Highly recommended channel. Battery replacement... Locate cars of the same ilk to swap with your own when it does eventually fail. If it goes pete Tong we all say we will be siphoning petrol from cars, and after that making plastic fuel. But for the EV owner, we need to find the cars location, and either steal it or swap the battery. Theft is the obvious answer... did I say theft? I meant to say reappropriattion! Like what the gov will be doing! Learn how to get it moving, back to your place. So, make a detailed map of the service stations that repair such cars, and in general what plugs they have. I considered a battery two wheeled tractor for my situation. I though against it. My plan is to not be using ANY power on the farming aspects within a few years from now, so my argument to have one over my petrol unit is voided. So. Enjoy it whilst you can! Sell it before it dies because otherwise you need to get rid of the batteries. Not easy. Cheers 🇬🇧

I suspect that there will be some sort of chip that IDs the battery packs to prevent people sticking in upgraded ones or non BYD ones, without a whole computer set up to reprogram the car system

Love it, but there is no way I’d finance a car. If I had the cash, I’d buy it. Every car we have, we pay cash for it.

Volvo V70 D5 all day for me (although it handles like a school bus) but big,Safe, Very Comfy, reliable,Quick,and with a full tank of fuel I can get anywhere in the uk without stopping for fuel, You can pick some MK2 up now for next to nothing and they will do 400,000 miles if looked after, The BMW 530D Touring is also an awesome car but expensive to fix.

I'd get a diesel generator on a trailer for longer distances out in the sticks. Might sound stupid but your mpg is going to be about the same as any modern diesel but you also can use the electricity when the power goes dow for home stuff.
@Lee_Proffit4 ай бұрын
Would need to be a pretty big generator plus the fuel, would be quite a heavy, which will affect mileage, especially as it only is doing 160 miles per charge now

Thanks for sharing Mike. Love the “build your dreams” bit on the back 😄 I don’t trust EVs much. Partner wants one but I think I’d want to hold on to a diesel car if he got one.

I'd prefer something I could MacGyer a fix if needed honestly. I'm kinda holding out for hydrogen vehicles as a "eco friendly" option. My dream car though is a either an old school Hylux or Landrover. Both can be diesel and both can be converted to run on veg oil so I am good with them. I'm not excited about electric vehicles I'm a bit suspicious of them really.

Most modern vehicles fall into this "not repairable by owner" category, as all the systems are linked up to mini computers. I'm with you on the diesel Land rover 👍🏼👍🏼

No EV for me

Seems that we are all going to have an ev sooner or later at this rate.
@Lee_Proffit4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't touch an EV with a barge pole, one of the main reasons for prepping is a power outage and unless you have a big generator (no idea of what their charge rate is, but expect it is fairly high) you are stuck. You said that you got 160 mile range out of it, it would be interesting to see what that goes to when the car is fully loaded (as if on your way to your bug out location with family and preps onboard) Also you can't carry spare fuel with you, once the batter is flat it's game over. Same goes for your bug out location, if there is no big generator or massive solar set up, then the EV just becomes a storage shed 😞 Ps - I looked up the charge rate, 7.4Kw for 9 3/4 hours, that is a massive generator and a ton of fuel
@UKUrbanPrepper4 ай бұрын
@@Lee_Proffit interestingly that was fully loaded for a holiday away in Scotland so quite full. Long term even if it’s days and days to charge it will do more than when the petrol goes bad … so it could be more long term.
@Lee_Proffit4 ай бұрын
@@UKUrbanPrepper So the Scotland run, did you you some idea of range, which is good, it might even increase as the car loosens up I've run my van on 3year old diesel, filtered chip shop oil and vegetable oil before now with no problems (apart from smelling like a chip shop 🙂) 7.4Kw for 9 hours is an awful lot of power, especially for a home solar set up, maybe someone like Steve (EDP) can give you some idea of what would be needed for that ?
