I tried a Atto 3 standard range on a trip to Twizel from Christchurch - about 290km each way, with 600m - 700m of a climb on the way there. I drove mostly on cruise control at an indicated 110kph, and the traffic was light. It needed a top up charge at Tekapo on the way up there, but made it back with about 50km of range on the way back down. I found it a really nice car to drive, quiet, smooth, with great road holding, and a fantastic interior. I didn't air fry any spuds, prefering to stop for a pie at the Fairlie bakery, but was really impressed by the car.

Wifey and I have this exact car, shoot range in white, and In Australia, the order ratio is a crazy 30:1 with most people getting the long range version. It’s a bit silly to my mind, but we also have a Tesla which we’re looking to use on long trips because of the much better charging speeds and Tesla charge network. We took the BYD on a longer trip recently and it was a hassle to charge timing wise only getting a hilarious 75 or so kw at the charger. Makes a wonderful car in town though.

@@caravanstuff2827 in practice the V2L is overrated unless you want to camp a tent next to the car. I think it’s a great but very minor feature, and overall I’m much more impressed with the clean experience the Tesla provides than the feature set. Gotta say I do like the sunroof in the BYD
@JoshuaMcTackett Жыл бұрын
@@morri03 yeah it’s fair. I think charging speed matters more than range though. The network needs to improve and it is, but it’s also not that bad. Bigger battery = more weight and more time to charge. A nice quick 50kwh battery that can top up in 30 mins or less is perfect for road trips. Even better when you have the options of Telsa’s great network

Great video. In South Africa we should be getting the Atto3 later this year. But I am interested in the V2L capabilities as then we could use the car to power appliances in our house. In SA we have "loadshedding" which is controlled power blackouts due to the missmanagment and corruption of our national power provider.

I can confirm that it works well, quite hand during last power cut here in NZ, only for half a day fortunately. Maximum peak load is around 3KW as Gavin mentioned, but sustained power load is around 2.4 KW, it will cut off if the loads is at max/peak for longer period of time.

I am living in Thailand. I ditched the Atto 3 mainly because of its interior. I like the idea but not these massive white surfaces which are not kid-friendly. So I ordered the Dolphin Extended range version (150 kW, 60 kWh). It has a smaller trunk space than the Atto 3, but still enough for me as a 2nd car. The seating position is lower than the Atto 3 but not too low for me. I very like the tech and style of the MG 4 but this car us too low for me.

From what I know of each vehicle the Tesla has much better "technology" built in, plus a LOT more power. Build quality wise I would rate them very similar, I think the Teslas are a lot better than they used to be. We opted for the BYD as my wife HATES the fact there is no dash behind the steering wheel on the Tesla, PLUS the fact the indicator is on the wrong side lol. Also the Tesla supercharging network is way more extensive (at least here in Australia) so you have more options for charging than a BYD. Personally if I was to upgrade my ICE I would consider the Model Y over the BYD, but I'm keen to see what the BYD Seal is going to be like as this looks pretty good from what I've seen. Yes it's a sedan and not an SUV though.

People keep talking about range because although they've bought EVs they never bought into the EV lifrstyle. Do these V2L adapters work with any V2L EV or specifically only a BYD? I've seen MG, BYD, Hyundai specific V2L adapters and I'm wondering if suppliers are taking the mick by listing them separately or if there is a legit reason for it. To me, the car and adapter should do a handshake according to the standards and not need specific versions.
@HarmLessSolutionsNZ Жыл бұрын
It takes more than just a plug in adapter to get V2L functionality, the EV also needs to have bidirectional ability built into it. If the EV doesn't have this functionality it's like having an anti-siphon fitting on a FF car. There are a few EVs that have V2L ability which allows an appliance or two to be powered. Incidentally the Nissan Leaf goes one better and has full V2H or V2G capability so you can use it like a Powerwall and run your house from it, if you also have a bidirectional EV charger to do so. Vehicle to Grid functionality is the next big developments in EVs with many coming models with this ability built in. We just have to wait for the hardware to become available and its price to drop, and our lines companies to recognise this opportunity which will allow V2G connected EVs to buffer peak demands on our grid.
