I am old enough to remember how everyone was so impressed with the Lancia Beta. Looked good and a really spacious family car. Then there were reports of rust. Lancia quickly went from hero to zero and all Italian cars started to be looked on with suspicion. As to the questions that the Viking asks such as "Is this normal?" and "Is this serious?" my answer would be that having rust on a £30k new car after a few months is unacceptable and should raise serious questions about BYD. In the 1980s/1990s the CEO of the Scandinavian Airline SAS used to exhort his staff to achieve excellence in everything they did by saying " if a traveller notices coffee stains on the fold down tray on the back of the seat in front they will think-- if they can't clean the tray how good will their engine maintenance be? -- ". If BYD can't build a car body how can they build an electric motor? If I were the Viking I'd certainly be wary of telling the world to buy BYD cars!

When Falcons first came to Australia my friend's Dad started a panel beating workshop to fix the rust before they were sold. I worked in a Lancia dealership, awesome cars but rust and other problems held them back. We had a customer who was a Qantas pilot and he dropped his car in one day and said he was being posted OS for 6 months so that should give us plenty of time to sort out all the problems his car had.

Don't believe Viking on everything he says. he is slightly biased towards BYD even if he did own one. If there indeed are issues on BYD Atto3 which seems unlikely considering millions of Chinese live on the coast and seem to be happy buying these more than any other brand despite heaps of choice. But even if they are they are not as big as Tesla's mainstream quality issues on American made cars widely reported for over a decade globally which Viking never adressed because he loves the brand.

Hey, I live right on the beach and we all park our cars out on the street just across the road from the beach. This is Wellington, which is an extreme marine environment . Our cars do rust, but nothing like what those photos show. Mainly it is the subframes and underbody components like suspension, pipework, brackets etc. The bodywork itself stays fairly rust free. BTW I remember seeing that LDV uses in Aus had body panels rusting really badly, wasn't there a lawsuit about that. LDV blamed the owner for parking near a beach. Seems like some steel may be substandard, or treatment is not up to spec.

There where once famous Fiat and Alfa Romeo that rusted the same way! All due to Russian steel with too much sulfur in. We had a Giulietta from a special serie made with steel from Sweden and that car only had rust issue on the exhaust system we later changed. If we would still own that car it would cost a fortune now… BYD will however quickly loose market especially in Europe with such issues. Low cost on important parts does only pay for short and is a bad idea to earn trust and confidence. 🤑🤮😎🇨🇭

🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔I searched in Chinese, and I also found many articles complaining about Tesla's rust. It seems that human beings have encountered new problems. If you are near a substation, there will be electrostatic effects. Substations generate extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields. The actual impact on the surroundings is mainly the electromagnetic induction effect, such as the static electricity generated when taking off a sweater in a dry environment. .For cars with batteries (Tesla, BYD), the body will be charged with static electricity, and every discharge (in humid air) will complete an oxidation process, which may be the root cause of electric car rust.😩😩😩

As John Cadogan said in his video, it's most likely just occurring as surface rust in areas where the galvanic protection can't get in between assembled parts during the galvanizing dipping process. If they are in fact properly galvanized then it won't be a problem as the zinc coating will act as a sacrificial material to prevent the spread of oxidation through the steel in these localized areas.

Rust in the fastening part of the construction site is inevitable for almost all brands. When bolts and nuts are fastened, the rust-proof coating will definitely be destroyed. Generally, the original parts are basically fine, and the more the vehicle is repaired and dismantled, the more obvious it will be. Does not affect the safety, use and service life of the vehicle, just go to the car repair shop and have a look.

The problem with this is that the car is barely on the road. It would be "acceptable" even for a 3-4 year old car but not something that barely has driven. I can only guess it happens to some other brands but that doesn't give excuse to them as well lol. I'm no expect on the subject, but if practically speaking rust issues downgrade the safety of the car that much then yeah i'd be concerned for a practically new car. Because these connection joints as in clips no matter it is bolt nuts or spot welding points, These joints could not be reach covered by protecting solution such elctro plating or hot dip galvanized.

I worked for many years on cars from wrecking yards. This looks very much like they unbolted that cross-member or whatever component was bolted there. Until then the paint/dip sealed that joint and I'll bet no rust was seen at that time. Then sitting in the weather in a wrecking yard with bare metal exposed shows exactly as much rust as I'd expect.

A relative of mine worked all his working life in a major UK steelworks and firmly believed that the reason that Japanese cars didn't rust so much in the 1970-80's when all other nationalities vehicles were rusting severely was because the Japanese manufacturers insisted on "double rolled steel" and everyone else didn't. So perhaps one of the reasons (apart from cheaper labour) that Chinese vehicles are less expensive is that the quality of steel being used is inferior.

Check facts; Norway is a salt country, due to safety - all roads receive an incredible amount of salt every winter to reduce the risk of ice. And therefor the importer of BYD in Norway, make an extended anti-rust treatment on every BYD they deliver. Well, this isn't special to BYD, all car importers - no matter driveline has done this for 30 years at least in Norway. So BYD will not rust more, or quicker than any other brand. We still remember the first 10 years with Japanese cars in Norway, when this was more or less ignored - and they only lasted for 10 years due to rust. But in the end of that time the Japanese understood. The Chinese already understand - from the beginning.

Any vehicle garaged and used mostly within 50km of the coast will tend to rust. This includes in Australia. The reason is not just greater rainfall and humidity but that what rain does happen near the coast, has higher salt content. Near where I live in Batemans Bay (on the coast south of Sydney), second hand car dealers offer a premium for 'Goulburn cars' that the seller can demonstrate were mostly used and garaged there. This is because Goulburn is about 70 km inland and has a much drier climate. Vehicles from this area are renowned for minimal rust. Regular washing, preferably at a carwash using clean water, will help keep rust at bay. An issue not yet fully appreciated in EVs will be galvanic corrosion arising from the HV battery. In ICE cars with a maximum of 12V in the electrical system, these days this is manageable due to better grounding arrangements, but EVs with their high voltages in the hundreds will potentially exacerbate the issue.

If people are wondering why some cars are more expensive than others, even if they aren't from a "fancy" brand and it competes against a similar car in its category... This is one of the reasons why. Equipment can be similar, performance and economy can be similar, the driving experience can be similar... But the assembly itself and attention to detail is different. I'm not saying any car should be built like a 4th gen Golf, but if BYD won't be able to deliver same safety results or close to when it was new in couple of years or so then yeah it would be concerning for the company. And no i'm not trying to diss on BYD, if any car won't be able to do that then they aren't really that much worthy.

Rust always starts on the surface, that is a physical reality. If they aren't rust proofing hidden surfaces or sealing them so they don't get exposed to moisture then it's a disaster waiting to happen. Some of that looked like salt ingress, so maybe that car was garaged near the sea? Maybe he had a boat and tried to launch it off the trailer into the ocean? He said there was information that the steel for cars made in India are not galvanized if sold for domestic use, and only galvanized for exported cars. He said in China, cars sold for domestic use are commonly not galvanized, and that "some" cars for export may be galvanized or partially galvanized, although he said it was difficult to determine which ones. He also noted that for proper rust protection, galvanized steel need minimum 70 grams per square meter of surface area (140 grams when doing both sides of the steel). Sounds like I would be worried if considering a BYD to find out for sure if I was getting a [properly] galvanized export model or a non-galvanized domestic sales China model. Just FYI.
