I think Ugetsu said that he had no friends... i honestly wonder how his life would be without Akihiko... living in that dark place alone? And the way he was unable to let go of Akihiko...He knew their relationship was broken, that they both hurt each other, he was waiting for Akihiko to leave him first, he Knew he would leave him first.. I wonder how that level of consciusness messed him up.. (It's actually interesting how the movie contrasts Ugetsu's and Haru's homes: one is living in an underground dark space, the other in a high cozy home full of sunlight.) I wonder too if Ugetsu will be able to leave that dark place...

I really love the allusions throughout this scene and the entire movie as whole. I think the violin is supposed to represent Ugetsu and Akihiko, while the drums represent Akihiko's true feelings and Haruki. The violin made Aki feel worthless but he continued to play it's tune because he still loved it, just as he was with Ugetsu. The drums felt more freeing and less confusing the more he played, just as he is with Haruki. These little, intertwining details between people and music was such an amazing touch.

There is a scene where haru says that aki playing all this different instruments must be tiring. Later we find out that aki slept with people just to have a place to stay when he fought with Ugetsu, so he would be with them because it was convenient.

The music cues in this scene were heartbreaking and so, so good. It's been good throughout the series, too, but this just hit very different. It felt like it really _did_ signify the end, but also the beginning of something new, which is what it is. Not just for Akihiko who moves on with Haruki, but for Ugetsu, too, albeit in a different way.

This scene really hits me hard. No matter how much they loved each other they knew they were just going to hurt each other in a relationship. Haruki brought a side of akihiko that ugetsu never saw. Ugetsu then realized that maybe akihiko was the one from the start. No matter how much you love each other sometimes the best path will be to let go :( and that’s what this scene really brought up.

When Ugetsu turns around for the final time it's symbolic because although the first time he had turned around, he was smiling and in amongst the fall (aki = autumn), now that spring (haru = spring) is coming again, that smile has become a face of uncontrollable tears I love how we first explored the relationship between 'fuyu' and 'ritsu' (winter and summer) and now, through these lyrics and mirrored scenes we get to see the changing seasons from autumn to spring that brings with it not only bittersweet endings but also new beginnings and budding feelings ❄️☀️🍂🌷

The look he gave at the end and the music behind was one of the strongest scenes I have ever seen in anime it really made me tear up I love ugetsu because as someone who got over unrequited love recently I feel deeply connected with him he is such a relatable character For the whole movie I just wished I could hug him and tell him that everything will be okay

this was so necessary for them, yet so heartbreaking. ugetsu realizing that akihiko let go of his hand for real, and turning around too watch him go, then remembering mafuyu's song. and later in the credits we see akihiko crounching down on the floor. it was truly sad but they needed it to go on. they were in love for a while, but it was not healthy. still, i cry like a baby every time i watch this

I think that Akihiko stating that he loves both the violin and the drums is a reflection of his and Ugetsu’s relationship. Him stating that he’ll continue to play the violin is basically him saying that he still valued their relationship but is ready to move on

As much as I love both these characters, their flaws shone through PERFECTLY during this film. If someone you love is stopping you from doing things you’re passionate about, maybe it isn’t really love at all. I’m realizing that if the movie shifted the focus back onto any other characters instead, it would’ve never been as great. I’ve always been curious about characters, ESPECIALLY Ugetsu, so I’m glad we saw more of them. Akihiko relies a lot on his emotions, and often does rash things to shift the focus away from his current issues, I personally despise this side of him, but I am SO GLAD that they gave it the correct attention needed behind it. Ugetsu seemed too critical of him, and too critical of others in general, but what he also seemed to take for granted was Akihiko’s willingness to give in so that he could pursue what he wanted. Though I’m also very glad that the relationship was painted in the toxicity needed to correctly present it. Overall, both of them are messy, but everyone being flawed is a huge part of what makes this series so great.

I know this is an old comment, but I had to add this reply. To me, the main aspect of Ugetsu and Akihiko’s relationship was to showcase how love can be conditional. Throughout the relationship, Ugetsu is completely cold and apathetic toward Akihiko’s emotional plight, as he repetitively cheats on him and initially regards his musical talent as lukewarm mediocracy. But, nonetheless, he still values him in the way that Akihiko for him functions as a provider. While it is likely that Ugetsu retained some level of compassion for Akihiko, it is clear that it is only surface level in terms of introspection, unlike Akihiko’s realization and unpacking of his emotional trauma and fear of abandonment, due to the affliction of his and Ugetsu’s relationship (and likely the probability that Akihiko has borderline personality disorder).

Idk if it's just me but I think this scene hit so hard because it's so relatable. As I got to know Ugetsu more and more I realised how similar I am to him, and they reminded me a lot of a past relationship of my own. Then this scene kind of sealed the deal for me. The nonchalant attitude, but then the turning around in shock and desperation when he realises Aki isn't coming back this time, but letting go and accepting what is because moving on is what's best for both of them. This scene captured that conflicting feeling of hope, love, desire, pain, and acceptance all at once. Ugetsu truly did love Aki and Aki loved Ugetsu, but sometimes things just don't work out in our favour and we need to let go. This story is a work of art

It really breaks your heart, somehow reminds me of my previous relationship I loved that girl very much, we even dreamed of the future but at some point the relationship cracked, the relationship turned into something toxic and one day I realized that no matter how much I loved her I had to let her go, It is difficult to move forward but I feel better, sometimes I miss those beautiful moments that we once shared.

One thing that really miss in their relationship is communication. Even When they broke up, Ugetsu should have told him EXACTLY what he felt and why he wanted to break up with him (and also helping him finding a new home) but he didn't and it's the main reason why their relationship became toxic. They both did so bad to each other i hope they will be more happy now in their own way

This scene actually shows what it means to love someone enough to let them go, let them go not always means give up on them or the relationships, some relations not matter how in love they both can be because of time, the reality we live in or just because you hurt each other in a way makes the relationship just die, if you love enough a person you have to know when to let them go so both of you can be better, It will hurt so much at first it can last even moths of years before loving an other person or even yourself as much as you loved that other person but I promise, everything will get better, and even do you both move on you will still be in each others hearts and if you too are really meant to be together then life will do the magic if not then you just should enjoy the memories you had together and be happy if you see this person being really happy with someone else

Ugetsu and Akihiko has got to be one of the most tragic, yet realistic takes on a relationship I've ever seen. They care about each other so deeply but it was a wrong place, wrong time situation. They spoiled each other too much that they stopped caring about themselves, and so they just couldn't get it to work.
