I am on my 4th... why I deviate then come back speaks the legend of their worth to an owner. p.s. still proudly doin’ the “Jeep Wave”, as we pass others on our life’s journey ✋

Jeeps - especially the Patriot and Compass have hit-and-miss quality. Actually, mostly MISS. I was close to buying a 2015 Cherokee but opted for another brand because of the quality concerns with Jeep. I own a Toyota truck. It's never had a failure. My wife owns a jeep 1/2 my trucks age and less than 1/2 the mileage and we've spent a few thousand on repairs. The problem with buying a used Toyota is you can't find one with under 100k miles. It is economically similar to buy a new Toyota or a used Jeep. The savings on fuel and repairs with the Toyota would make the cost of ownership nearly equal.

Brother's Toyota 4Runner 4WD still going after 300,000, but horrible gas mileage, rides rough, and very uncomfortable to sit in for any long period of time. Our Astro Van just quit working after 320,000+ miles. It was AWD and did great on the road. I mourn its loss. Very versatile and great for traveling and towing. I would love a Jeep wrangler, but my nephew is a mechanic and says they're very expensive to repair. The newer ones just are not as robust as some of the older ones. Can be difficult to work on and that means more labor time and more $. If you're still looking for a replacement, Slim Potatohead for less $$, check into fleet vehicles for sale from the rental car companies. May find a great deal through there.

@@SuperSolomaniac The Jeep Liberty KJ was designed in the late 90's by Daimler Chrysler. The engine (3.7 Powertech) was in part designed by AMC before that brand was fully absorbed by Chrysler. It's up there as one of Jeeps best models ever selling nearly as many as wranglers of the same years. It had better road manners than the Cherokee XJ is was designed to replace and was well reviewed while outperforming similar vehicles.

Slim, I’ve been a Toyota guy since 1987. They’ve always been reliable. I have watched you and I am a fan. I trust your judgment, especially since it’s your money and your ride. I would give my choice a good plug though. My wife and I have put hundreds of thousands of miles on several kinds of Toyotas, always my money. Mine have always been 4X4 Tacomas and Tundras. I know you want the suv. The trucks were better tow vehicles for me. Anyway, they always worked, from Hawaii, across the US, California to North Carolina, Texas to Alaska, literally. I have driven in hurricane rain, in Florida, dark, snow storms, through Canada, up and down tough off road fire trails, in Tennessee, deer hunting and camping. My Toyotas haven’t failed me. A used Toyota is still good for many miles. Texas

It's hard to find good small 4x4 tow vehicles that aren't overpriced Japanese vehicles. I hope you did your research on the year and model of this Jeep. Jeeps can be hit and miss when it comes to reliability. Their not trash though or they wouldn't have such a following. Anyway I can't believe you drove your vehicle around with duct tape windows. lol. You know you can find places that rebuild window regulators if you want to save a buck. It's usually cheap replaceable parts that go in them. Also don't sell yourself short when it comes to working on your vehicle. Your camper improvements show you have a mechanical knack and the ability to fabricate stuff.

I still feel angry when I think about how they tried to take advantage of me.

A Subaru would do you really well, but I see you've already made your decision. There are ones with the flat 6 cylinder engines (and they're all 4wd except the new BRZ which is not a tow vehicle), but the ones with turbochargers are just as good. I tow 1600lbs easy with it, several times a year. A utility trailer (1200lbs) and my 450lb motorcycle. I can blast the A/C going 85 up long grades just fine without losing steam. I guess you could get a 2010 Jeep like that for pretty cheap, under 5 grand if you find the right one, but you should not discount the power/torque that the turbocharged 4 cylinders make. For example, my 2005 Subaru Forester Turbo was DYNOED (power at the wheels - engines are rated on the crank, that's what you'll find online or in the sales brouchure) and made 248whp, 263 ft-lb of torque (this is around 280bhp and 290 ft-lb at the crank). The jeep is rated for 210bhp and 235 ftlb. For comparison, accounting for driveline loss that jeep is probably making about 160whp and 210 ft-lb of torque.

Newer is not always better. Looked like about $500 bucks in repairs if you take it to a shop, cheaper if you did it yourself. I had a Ford F-150 and 250 with my travel trailer and could not drop the tailgate because it would hit the tongue jack, and those trucks are made for towing, not sure tailgates or rear doors will open when towing a trailer with a tongue jack. Best vehicle is one that is paid for, especially when you are on a budget as you mentioned.

I am surprised you don't do mechanics because you do so many other things. Your a thinker and there are many how to videos on KZbin. Best of Luck with new one. Can't wait to see you down the road.

I’m confused: at the time you shot this you could still return the vehicle? (If the testing isn’t to your liking?) I guess we’ve always thought we had to keep it and our only recourse was whatever warranty it was sold with if problems emerged

Being a person who has never spent more than $500 buying cars(unregistered) and putting them back on the road, I can honestly say there is nothing wrong with an older vehicle. If well maintained, they will last 20 to 30 years or more. Still have mum and dad's old car that they paid $400 for back in 1989, A Holden Premier. Its 50 years old this year and it still runs and drives fine. As does another 50 year old car that is parked beside it, A Volvo 144..(sadly, they have to go!). Have been travelling Australia in a 32 year old wagon(another Volvo) that has done in excess of 650,000kms in its life. Wouldn't part with it, as it's been a very reliable and dependable car. I'm in the same position, don't have the money buy a new car. Even if I did, I'd still buy an old one and fix it up. It's cheaper! Then, I fix them myself.. self taught mechanic. That would be my best recommendation and advice to you Slim, to anyone.. learn to fix your car, yourself. At least the minor stuff. Window regulators are quite simple. Most often, the glass comes out of the regulator. Had it happen so many times on mum and dad's old car. That rear door on the Jeep, would've been a headache with the trailer.

Jeeps. I get the whole off-road thing but the reliability of Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Fiat is just unacceptable. Better off buying a 20-year old Lexus GX470.

Good luck on the new car. The Liberty was one that I looked at but sacrificed the 4WD in favour of AWD and towing capacity and got a Subaru. I don't regret it, but next round I'll get a bigger car because I upgraded my camper from a teardrop to popup. The Crosstrek can only tow 1000 lbs, but it has been rock-solid. I never had this reliability with a Chev, Pontiac, Ford or Dodge. Good luck with the newer Liberty.

She served ya well... Out w/ the old... in w/ the new(er)... check out time is w/ a topographic map, not a road map (imho). Bring it back w/ at least 1 1/2” caked mud...tell em you’ll let em know in a few days (so that they wash it !)... THEN come back & sign on the dotted line 🤗

My question. What are costs? Expenses? Are you on the road 365? Are you a snow-bird? You mention milage and many miles, how many do you put on in a year? You could just use ball-parks? Curious.

Jeeps can be fickle creatures (you can say that about any marque), but get a good one (properly equipped) and it will amaze you with it's capabilities. On a side note, of all the crazy places my 2006 Grand Cherokee has taken me, it was always accompanied by either a Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, or a rented Wrangler. This illustrates that there are other vehicles that can compete in the 4WD arena.

Miss my Jeep Cherokee. A lot. Was once the *must have* SUV in the 1990's when I bought it. Never had any problems with it. Over a decade of use, and exploring most of the Western USA, a lot off road, the only thing I had to replace was a water pump. And go the interior full spare tire setup, specifically in case I ever got a trailer. But I never did. Irony.

HEY, Good choice on jeep. Looks like a 2008 liberty. We have one and when we bought it came with lifetime warranty on drive components. Only thing is the heater core is bad design. Drivers side after while not much heat. Passenger side ok. Replaced core my advise is to have core flushed out regularly. Over 140000 miles only problem. Check out reviews and see everyone has trouble with core. It is not the heater control.

Buy the longest Toyota Hiace 4WD. It will last forever and you will have lots of storage space for all your gear (ca. 800 kilos if I remember correctly). Preferably the one with five doors and side-windows that opens in the back.

I had a 2009 Grand Cherokee with the diesel and it was the perfect vehicle for me. TONS of power, towed like nothing was behind it, and still got great fuel economy. Comfortable, roomy enough to sleep in, great off road, and handled surprisingly well on road. But... that maintenance. Anytime something went wrong (and it would), it was easily triple the cost of fixing one of my previous gas cars. Not to mention that not everyone liked working on those German diesels. Perfect car, when everything was working.

Hello Slim Good Video Slim. Watch out for Flooded Cars & trucks. A detail shop can clean up ,it hard to tell. Have a mechanic go over it top to bottom looking for signs of water damage, or buildup. Turn on AC , blowing from defroster vents, set a Humidity gauge on dash. Check for higher Humidity than outside. Flood cars do dry out. Not a foolproof test. Smell for mold, also strong air freshener odor, 1 giveaway .

Oh no what a disappointment!! I have same Jeep (2012 Liberty) and it is the best vehicle I ever owned and currently has 96k miles on it. Not one problem and we drive it and sleep in it everywhere. Slim, I think you would really like some of the improvements over your last Liberty. I am really hoping it works out. What a cliff hanger! I’ll be eager waiting to see your next video.

Those things are so minor, windows, latch... when the engine takes licking and keeps on ticking you keep it. I love my 03 Liberty. Never any major engine issues, just basic wear and tear stuff. I’m no mechanic but i do a lot of KZbin research and do my own work on my Jeep. I know so many owners that still have there Liberties with over 200+ miles. At least you got another Jeep, but don’t go too new, the newer the more they break down.

If you can find a reasonable Toyota 4Runner that'd be the best bet - reliable, V6, and good off road capabilities. Maybe a Forester, but I don't think it has the towing capacity for your trailer. Window regulators, rear gate latch, or peeling chrome aren't that hard. I figure you have the Haynes manual for the Jeep? The rust just sand, primer, and paint it. Unless it's major transmission or engine problems keep it a little longer.

If your on a budget, look into used police SUV's. With any luck, you will get one in white. Jeeps are expensive; no after market parts. Go with Ford or Chevy.

our heater core started leaking in Alaska; replaced it several thousand miles later and working fine now. The Libby is great value, ours goes where most Wranglers do go. Especially with the recent 2” lift kit we installed (JBA kit)

Well, the old Jeep has been a good one. Best of luck with the new one! I hate having to get a new(used) vehicle. You have to learn the combination to everything all over again. lol I have a question. Do you have a twin brother or something? Or have I been watching your videos way out of sequence? In one you have a beard, and then in the next one I watch you don't. I'm kind of confused. Is it a stick-on?
