Really though? From what I understood a lot of people liked Byleth (I mean, other than the Smash players that didn’t play Three Houses). Alpharad’s a pretty big FE fan and he argued that Byleth was the best protagonist so far.

Plus it makes sense in terms of representation and gameplay. Not only does Byleth represent 3 houses but they also represent the different weapons/units the series has. Gameplay is something Sakurai already explained.

Although to be fair Robin was one of the better FE newcomers in Smash. So much so that even after playing Awakening I never thought that Chrom should’ve been chosen instead of him. And at the very least Corrin represented the manakete/dragons of the series.

Alright, I can defend this character right now. Ready? 1.) Fire Emblem Three Houses was very, VERY well received (Hell, Jeremy Jahns even gave it an “Awesometacular” rating). 2.) Three Houses is the best selling game in the series. 3.) Fire Emblem is a Nintendo game. Smash used to ONLY be Nintendo (people seem to forget about this little detail BTW). 4.) The Smash team took major strides to make this character unlike any other sword fighter. 5.) Byleth uses other weapons - something Fire Emblem fans who play Smash have been waiting YEARS for. 6.) Female Byleth is waifu material. 7.) The stage looks great, and the music’s good too. 8.) There’s no rule stating Sakurai can’t use Fire Emblem anymore. 9.) THERE ARE SIX OTHER CHARACTERS YET TO BE RELEASED. But yeah - shit character, amirite? “Fuck Sakurai, and FUCK Smash, and FUCK NINTENDO. I wanted muh MASTER CHIEF.” That’s what you sound like. Imagine listening to THAT all day.

I dislike this decision only because it seems corporate as fuck. The fighter's pass was decided on before it's development started. So that means that Nintendo could not look at Three House's popularity and say "We should put Byleth in, people would love it" because the game wasn't out yet. This was a boring, corporate marketing move and you can see that with the fact that 1/4th of the direct is just an ad for Three Houses. I am not upset or a mad hoe as Twitter would say. I'm bored. This was the most boring choice Nintendo could have made. Every new character has made me go back to Smash to play it again, but this one will not. Instead my copy of Smash will sit in it's case until fighter pass 2.
