TO ALL: If you are on a tight budget, keep your 3700x, it's an AWESOME CPU for the money. On the other hand, don't listen to anyone who tells you "there's no reason to upgrade", because they are simply wrong. It's just a money issue, do it if you can afford it.

why do you need this much ram?
@davidhodge0201
@davidhodge0201 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikkeipvck8529 I don't "need" that much ram. But at the time of purchasing, ram was dirt cheep all things considered and I had run into limitations with the 32 gb beforehand. Now of course you could say "you should manage open tasks and background usage" etc. But I don't have to now. It's one less thing that I have to worry about. And just to prove my particular point. I'm playing a game right now and memory usage is hovering around 38gb currently. So technically, the way that I use my computer I do "need" more than 32 gb.

Tech! I decided to listen to you and bought a 5900x. I cannot notice the difference between a 2600 and a 5900x on daily task. Now, the only difference is when I set my ram to 2400MT from 3200MT and clockspeed from 4.6GHz all core and 4.9GHz peak to 3.7 all cores no boost. At this power saving preset single core task take 2 to 3 times longer. Btw, about 8 of my cores are idle at all times unless I am doing productivity.

Several years ago, I had upgraded from a Core 2 Quad 9505S (formerly Pentium E6500) to a Ryzen 5 1600. I "missed an upgrade" as well, but was in no financial position to build a new computer between those systems. Those times have changed, and I'm now ready to switch over to a 5900X. I just helped my younger brother source parts to upgrade his aging 4730K/1050ti system to a 5900X/3070ti. I about spit out my food when he said he wanted his build to last 10 years! He originally wanted a 3060, thinking it was "high end." Needless to say, I've had to educate him. I've also been able to help him make wiser decisions on his cooler, RAM, SSD, PSU, all while helping him stay within his $2000 budget. (The old computer will be passed down to his children.) Just as my experience in upgrading was an eye-opening moment, I can't wait to see his reaction when he gets his new computer built. Thank you for your advice over the years to help make the most out of my computing dollars.

People need to understand that Gamers Nexus, and other KZbin channels are trying to show you the difference BETWEEN different parts. At least on the GN side they clearly state that this is all about gaming, and make no claims that their benchmarks are all inclusive. Steve at GN regularly explains how more cores and threads show better .1 percent lows in many situations as he goes over results. Things that can't be benchmarked can't be benchmarked! My fiance is a Realtor and when we met 2 years ago, she used to work on a crappy old like 2015 4 core AMD laptop with 4GB ram and a HDD. I noticed that and gave her my old computer with a Ryzen 1700, 16GB RAM, an NVME SSD, slapped dual monitors on it, and it absolutely blew her mind how much more productive she could be. Mind you, she doesnt game, or edit or do anything power user related. She exclusively browses the internet, and has PDF/ other documents open. Was an absolute game changer for her. Upgraded from Ryzen 5 3600 to Ryzen 9 5900X saw massive cpu spike drop from 100% to 50% whenever apex legends is loaded from the data center. It only took a mere 5 seconds for the 5900X to simmer down to under 10% while you have to wait for a good 10 to 15 seconds for the 3600 to drop back at idle game usage. Most people will not notice the spike happening in the background without the stats from afterburner but it is worth noting that the 5900X has already delivered and awaiting the next task while 3600 is still running in 100%. If you were to do anything beyond gaming at that time, you might even hear audio crackling due to cpu bottleneck.

Every time I hear Ian. Lol best channel ever. Seriously I started out from an 1800x build with a 1060 with a sata hard drive. Then a 2700x with a 1080ti. Then a 3700x with a 2080 super. Now the final product 5950x with a 3090. The difference and improvement felt with each transition was nuts. Now it feels like my computer is a genie and just grants wishes. If people don't believe there's a difference go try this: go use a computer with a regular old hard drive and then one with an NMVE drive. That step alone blew people's mind out of the water! It's that big of an impact going from junk to high end.

I went from a R7 3700X to a R9 5900X this year, and while that doesn't sound like a huge jump, I actually DO notice those extra 4 cores when doing many tasks on a multimonitor setup. I'm quite sure that difference will only be amplified over the coming years, too. Now I've got a game running on 1 monitor, and on the other I'm watching KZbin with multiple browsers open and multitasking while gaming. And it's all buttery smooth. My one mistake was going for a RX 6800 in February. Had I waited another month, I'd have a 6900 XT sitting in my machine right now for the same price. I love the 6800 but I'll really be kicking myself for that one down the road.

2 years ago, I had only ever used my laptops that were dual core (for context, I'm not a gamer but I do music production and send a lot of time on my machines.) Buddy at work was upgrading, offered to sell me his old build: (9700k, mobo, power supply, ect.) Didn't think I NEEDED it but he only wanted $200 for everything. 48 hours later after experiencing what a 8 core 9700k can do, I realize how I NEEDED that machine 24 months ago. This machine still does what I need it to, but I realize even still, I NEED to at least upgrade to the 13600k in the next 12 months. Can't quite afford to just yet, but this machine is just spoiling me right now and I want my next one to do the same and better. Sometimes we don't know what we need until we have it. I can't justify a 13900k I9 for the money. My current 9700k made me fall in love with the i7 so I was thinking about the 13700k. But then this channel or your other one opened my mind to the i5 13600k with 14 cores(I think I would like my next build to be my last one on DDR4. Then maybe I upgrade and go DDR5 last time?)

"Crappy" is all relative. I understand what's being said here, and I certainly am not going to be content with an entry level machine, but what is satisfactory for me may be underpowered or overpowered to someone else. I have made sure that each of my computer builds have been unambiguous upgrades to the machines they replace. By and large, they tended to be relatively underpowered on the video card side of things, but they have always been able to run what I want to play. My 1999 build used an S3 Savage 3D card and a Celeron 366. Its upgrade was a TNT2. The upgrade to that one was a GeForce 2 and a Pentium 3 550 (O/C'd to 733). I hit a bit of a snag after that, and didn't have enough money for a worthy video card upgrade, so I settled for a GeForce 4 MX440, which got me from 2003-2009, just barely (mated to an AMD Athlon 2200XP and 512 megs of RAM). My 2009 build used a 9600GSO, mated to a Phenom II X3 710 and 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM. I upgraded the RAM twice (first to 4 gigs, then to 8), the CPU once (to a Phenom II X6) and the video card once, to a GTX 460. My 2014 build used an Intel i5 2400, 16 gigs of DDR3 RAM, a 180 gig SATA SSD, and 2 1.5TB Seagate hard drives, with a GTX 560 Ti as the video card. I built another system a year later, and used the two machines concurrently. The 2015 build was a Xeon E3 1230V3 with 32 gigs of DDR3 RAM and a GTX 560Ti 448 core edition, which I only replaced a few months ago. My two machines currently are an i5 10400, 32 gigs of RAM, mated to the same 560Ti I used in the i5 2400 build, and an i5 12600KF, 32 gigs of RAM, sporting a GTX 1650 for its video card. I have every intention of replacing the 560Ti next, money permitting. Maybe I'll spring for a GTX 1660, put it in the 12600KF system, and move the 1650 to the bedroom machine. We'll see what happens when the time comes. Are my systems ever ideal? Nope. Do they disappoint me? Almost never. Well, the Athlon 2200XP system got pretty swamped by the time I replaced it. It had difficulty running 480p streaming video on Hulu, and even struggled to run Everquest well. I was in a bad financial spot at that point, and I had to make do until I could afford an upgrade.

But the BIGGEST difference I see less studders and frame drops in games now, and it is WAY more smoother experience. Plus the bonus of everything else on the PC running smoother and launching faster as well especially when multi tasking makes experience so much better. I don't think I'm ever going to buy lower end CPU's ever again xD.

I put him behind my pc with my nvme 970 evo 240hz and 3070ti. and I let him play on my pc and I even let him launch windows and start up and update all the games. on my 1 gigabit fiber optic internet. Awesome to hear! Sounds like the game is poorly optimized on PC in some way. A game here in 2022 should not need that high of a CPU to run properly. Interesting that it seems to run just fine on console with their 8 core CPU's, but this could be because they have uniform hardware whereas on the PC there are endless hardware configurations. Regardless, glad it is running well for you!

@@markh351 thanks! I actually first played the game on Xbox series x and it ran flawlessly. But then gpu prices started to drop so I bought a 6700xt and sold the Xbox. And immediately noticed how stuttery the game is on pc. But it does look a lot better on max settings. I think the game still stutters with the 5900x just it doesn’t drop below the 60 cap so I don’t notice It

Elden Ring is fairly optimised, though I'd say its rougher on older lesser hardware. It surprises me that it even works somewhat decent on old hardware while looking almost settings are on ultra even set to low. I kept getting stutters pre-patch on Elden Ring but, since then I haven't felt it. I stop getting stutters since I upgraded to 5900x from 2700x. Everything is much smoother, I just lock the frames to 144. I also upgraded everything else.

@@Ruby_Mochii Makes sense. The 8-core CPU's inside of the current gen consoles did not have stuttering problems with the game, but they are newer CPU's. The recommended CPU for Elden Ring for PC is a Ryzen 5 3600, which is also a newer chip in the grand scale of things. Glad the patch helped sort everything out.

I think one of the bigger problems regarding upgrades in your discussions is the price/performance aspect. I watch you long enough to know it's not your intention but in my opinion it's not always that people don't want to hear the truth but rather don't get the answers they're looking for. A typical answer includes a Rogue testimony, a viewers testimony and your own. All of those in general atleast are on a 5800x or higher lvl. This is where you lose a lot of people. Some people first watch their wallet and then the performance. And it sometimes feels like you tell them it's the wrong way to think. Best example "6c/12t is all you need" and "16GB Ram for Gaming" for atleast 2 years you talk down on it. I understand you mention your usecase and so on. But often your answer is "buy 8/16 and 32GB or wait till you have enough money. 6/12 and 16GB is stupid." Although you are probably well aware of the fact that there are people who are perfectly fine with both for example 8700k/16GB or 5600x/16GB. And people know that and sometimes they also just don't want to wait any longer because they already waited to be able to afford the 6/12 or 16GB. The "if you can't afford A, you shouldn't buy B" statement also somewhat goes into that direction. In my opinion you'd be much more relatable to go the more diplomatic route of "hey, I would suggest you spend more and get better hardware but there are people happy with it so maybe you are one of them. I still think it's a bad choice but I also know sometimes one just doesn't want to wait anymore." I myself run a i9/2080ti/32GB/38inch-144hz combo and am more than happy with it but even I often feel like I'm missing out on life changing performance when watching your videos and how great the newer and shinier hardware is supposed to be. And I bet it is a lot better but I also bet you are atleast a 100% more perceptible to performance differences than I am. This statement is for sure not that diplomatic but I realy think you should have more viewers because there are plenty of people who would benefit not only from your hardware advise but also from your Papa Deals advise. But if midrange/lowend people can't be bothered to watch your hardware advise they definetly won't see your Papa Deals advise. And Papa Deals on the other hand helps them to get out of the midrange/lowend earning spectrum.

Save money. Build as high end as you can. Enjoy for 5-6 years before any upgrade or even a new build. Forgot, best part, I can finally edit 2 videos at the same time, edit my subtitles, surf web, have office running for my document, conpressing a file to save, print some paper and my cpu is barely breaking a sweat usage 70% with room to spare. My 64gb ram belarely breaks a sweat too being used at 50% at times with 50% left of space. Totally new world from a crappie pre-built PC to a custom build (my 1st built). Never looking back.

This is exactly what I do. I build for a 5-6 year run, making sure I get parts that will work well into the future without any need to swap motherboards, etc... Then I build and I begin saving up for the next build 6 years from now. Every single time I've done this I've been vindicated for buying higher a higher spec part than most would recommend because it would get me an extra year or two of great performance, rather than saving a $150 and having middling performance 3 years in.

But honestly with the games I play the 1080Ti still does a damn good job all things considered. At least now it has a shot at being the bottleneck for a bit instead of the CPU like in the 4770K before it. I'm looking to get a 4080 or 4080Ti to finally replace it finally when those are launched.

I am using 3440*1440 widescreen, 48 GB of RAM, and Radeon VII targeting 100 Hz with less than 2000 RPM. I would like to either go 4k widescreen in the future or add a second 4k 120 Hz OLED panel/tv with increasing to 144 Hz and the RPM would not reach 2000. I don't completely disagree. However I honestly believe you keep approaching this subject from your own point of view only. For the AVERAGE user who doesn't play games, 4 cores are still working. I work in IT for the city in which I live, before that I was in the private sector. I can honestly tell you that 4 cores still HUGELY dominate and that most don't need more. For them, SSD's and more system RAM are better upgrades. I think all of us gamers and streamers forget that we are in the minority. This is where I would agree with you. If someone is a streamer, gamer, work with CAD or video's. Four cores are ancient and you're doing yourself a great injustice staying with 4 cores. Though at some point just like clock speed. Intel and AMD will have to figure something else out for CPU design. They can't just keep throwing more cores in for more performance. Space isn't unlimited.

2 Thoughts there... 1. My channel is geared towards gamers and content creators, I'm not producing advice for "office boxes" 2. I actually do think 6 cores is the new office box, I see 4 core machines pegged just doing basic stuff these days. My Mom now has a R5 3600X, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB NVMe boot drive, and she does Facebook, Twitter, and email. It's slightly overkill to be sure, but it will last for years. A "new" 4 core machine in 2022 is a bad plan because those will be around for 5 years and they WON'T be enough in 5 years, or even 3.

If games go from needing 8 cores to needing 16 cores i'd expect them to double in terms of detail, and that's not going to happen, the more likely scenario is we'll require more because developers won't optimized as good as they used to. Do you think GTA 5 would be unplayable on a 4 core 4 thread if 8 cores had been standard in 2015? Possibly. Same game, but no need to optimized for stuff people don't use anymore, right

@Tech Deals @Rogue I went from Phenom 1 to I5 4670K then to R7 3700X. Wowie each time! One only thinks what they have is fast until they experience fast personally. Thinking about R9 5900X. Already have X570 and 6900XT with dual 1440p monitors. Probably better option than entire platform upgrade...maybe. I could wait till AM5 has time to "mature" before entire platform jump.

"If you dont want to play the latest and greatest you'll be fine" Tech and rogue are really getting out of touch. My 3600 handles Cyberpunk 2077, God Of War, Days Gone, Ac Valhalla, etc all on high settings just fine, I typically get 60-80 fps. Sure my PC sounds like a jet engine but they're playable.

That's great but you didn't mention your resolution or GPU that enables you to get those frames. Also, what makes you so sure that these games will run "fine" in games that release over the next 5 years? That's right, you don't know.

Tech and rogue are talking about unclean test benches What this means is not just playing the game on screen it means that you might also want to watch a KZbin guide or a twitch stream on one or more screens It sounds like your gpu is stronger than your cpu which means that it can do extra work in these aaa games. That's not necessarily a bad thing but worth to keep in mind. Someone with same cpu as you might have a different gpu and find out that the cpu power is not enough to offset their gpu.

@@C0d0ps Bingo. The average person has things like Discord, Spotify, a browser with a bunch of tabs, a half-completed assignment they're procrastinating on, etc... in the background. If they're also someone looking to stream that's another thing running. Yes, you can actually game by running computer bare with just the game up. Trust me, I did it for years. It's an annoying experience, and often requires dialing down settings severely. And at a certain point (where I'm at with my PC that needs replacing), the CPU is the problem. I have no choice but to upgrade.

Upgraded from 1700x to 5800x, the difference is not that big, maybe because I have only a sapphire vega 56 pulse and maybe because i have only 16gb of RAM. Ordered 2x16gb 3200mhz kit from g.skill with 14-14-14-34 timings, want to oc them to 3600mhz. I like 5800x because it doesn't raise fan speed when doing browsing etc, it ramps up only when gaming and even then not so much. So less noise was still worth it. Why vega 56 ? I play games 1-2 times a month.

If you don't find that upgrade to be impressive, you may have other issues. Was this on a 300 series board? Do you have a modern boot SSD? When is the last time you had a clean install of Windows? The GPU only matters for FPS in games, but the overall system responsiveness should have been obvious, like hit with a wet fish obvious.

I dunno, personally I would rather build rigs more often that are lower mid-range, than blow a bunch of money and try to make it last ages. I think it's silly to attempt to future-proof for the most part and I didn't used to think that way. I may never have top performance but I'll definitely have new features and the best part is, I won't be dropping 3k for it

I'm still using a computer that I built 10 years ago. I wanted to "skip" newer generation's of components as they are not performing way better in the old days. I remember in the 90's and 2000's that if you don't upgrade in 4 years nothing will run. Going from windows xp to windows vista was a pc upgrade. Now I went from windows 7 to 8 to 10 on the same system without any real need to upgrade as everything still "runs". Yes I have the money to build top of the line pc it's just right now AMD and Intel are slugging it out and are expected to DOUBLE single thread ipc in 2 years. The main concern of people holding out like me is that we don't want to spend $3000 on a pc that will be obsolete in 1 year. In 2010-2020 every generation of intel processor was 3-5% improvement. Alder lake was 30% single core and 60% multi core. Raptor lake is expected to have another 30% single and 40% multi. I'm probably going to still wait it out to see who wins the cpu war AMD or Intel as the rate of improvement is too good.

@@rahulahl I was planning a alder lake build earlier until I saw ram prices for DDR5. Also there's a new power supply standard for the upcoming new gpu's. Why build a new platform now when the power supply will become obsolete. I also waited because I thought a disruptive technology will come in and make everything obsolete but never came / not here yet. For example quantum computing with light and ai accelerator from mythic. I am looking at raptor lake /zen4 upgrade based on ram prices and availability on next gen power supplies.

I cannot echo Tech's sentiment strong enough. Long story short, I was stuck on an Acer laptop for a decade. It was the most frustrating, miserable experience with technology I've ever had. For something I had to use every day for contacting family and friends, sending in resumes, gaming, watching KZbin, light video and photo editing. That entry where they had to close other programs to free up resources? That was a constant for me. It's difficult to accurately describe how stressful it is to have everything the PC does take forever, or have some sort of hiccup. Almost everyone I took the laptop to told me the hardware was long in the tooth and I need a new PC. Swapping in an M.2 SSD helped... to a point. Formating my boot drive worked... for a time. That experience seared this sentiment into me for life. Life is too damn short to use a crappy computer. Sell, donate, or turn it into an e-waste center and get something modern. Trust me, the ease and lack of stress in day to day usage is worth it.

My takeaway from this is no matter your opinion, you can always find a group of people to support your particular argument 🥰👍. What wrong with us Aussies 🤕😭 Tech? Btw I use 3x pc builds from mid range to higher end and notice the difference in performance between all of them. Truth is, get the best you can afford, and if the next upgrade in performance tier is peanuts 💰💰then save and get the upgrade 🥰👍 you’ll notice the difference. But if you can’t afford the best $5k pc and you’re happy with it and does what you want it to do…., then don’t let anyone say you must immediately upgrade!

As much as I love these videos I still think there’s value in entry level gaming level parts. There’s a certain purity to cheaper, entry level builds. Especially for first time or newer builders. I remember building my first PC in a few years since the Core2 era in 2018 and I paired a GTX 1050 with an i7-8700(non K) and even though it was a weird mix of parts I still had a lot of fun figuring out what I could and couldn’t play well and what settings I could use, etc. At the time it was doing everything I wanted it to relatively well but the upgrade to the 1070 Ti shortly after was a game changer, haha.

when you're building your first computer the value proposition of what you get with your money is not very clear, and i think many people get stuck in what you could best describe as some kind of dunning-kreuger zone where they can't really think of anything that requires more power since the vast majority of tasks people use a computer for don't scale past six cores. i mean it's not hard to start doing things that require more cores but if you don't record yourself or edit video or do any sort of digital workstation stuff six cores seems fine then when you start doing video editing you realize 12 cores isn't enough

"I still had a lot of fun figuring out what I could and couldn’t play well and what settings I could use, etc" my overarching point is you do a great disservice to yourself and anyone else who buys low-end hardware and plans to use it for more than it's intended purpose. yeah I want to play the games I want to play. I don't have time for the BS of my "slow" computer not letting me do what I want to do with it, within reason. As soon as you build a budget system it's already out of date. I don't mean this to belittle you, however you don't truely understand what "smoothness" means until you experience a premium computer. 9:02 - You'll be like "holy hell when did my computer get so fast, going from an 8700k to a 12700k/13700k..."
