Having double the L3 cache and extra cores/threads has real world benefits, and like you stated it's not just about fps but those extra cores and cache help smooth everything out and provide a very responsive experience at the higher end as we push a games capabilities. technically, you can. Let's look at the steam database, almost 70% of users have 6 cores or less. Can you play with 6 or less? Yes. Do you need more than 6 cores to play? No. In addition, in the top 10 most played steam games we have Counter Strike, Dota2, Football manager 2022, mir4, Apex and so on. For these games, you can play with 4 cores. If you have a 12900k, will the whole system work better? Well... how obvious can the answer be? Now if your playing games that only make use of a few cores or use less than 16 threads to any real degree you may not see noticeable difference between a 5800x vs 5900x. However if you like to run alot of background apps, multiple tabs in a browser while playing, etc... Having the extra 4 cores and 8 threads allows your cpu to juggle tasks more efficiently, so when you do get a spike of high cpu usage you shouldn't see the affect vs using a cpu with less resources.

I don't think most games even know how to use more than 6 cores, I mean, look at benchmarks comparing the 5600x and 5800x. Next to no difference, sometimes the 5600x even wins somehow. I went from Ryzen 3600 to 5600x at 1080p 60-75Hz on an RX 6700 XT and it was a good upgrade both in 1% lows (smoothness) and averages. But for my monitor and GPU combo, I highly doubt I actually need more than a 5600x or that I would see any difference with 8 or 12 cores. I'm only gaming, I don't do other stuff. Any cpu can be good enough but the question is will it be for you. Can it get you the framerate you're looking to achieve? Is it smooth with no stuttering? Can you run all the programs you need at the same time. Does it wait on you or do you wait on it? Find the cpu that fills your needs and you'll be happy with it. And in the end it never hurts to get something better than you think you need if you can afford it. Especially if you are new to pc gaming. You might go from a single monitor rocket leage type to a triple monitor cyberpunk type of person. And also don't think you know more than the reviewers. They get to spend everyday exploring the ins and outs of every piece of tech they review. You also will find information from tech that others don't mention on other channels. I believe it. New World is an extremely CPU intensive game. It will sometimes go into the smt or (hyperthreading) on my 5900x in 1440p and is frequently using between 8-12 cores. It's nice to have the extra cores in a game like New World because as you've stated is makes the game feel very smooth.
@billj56453 жыл бұрын
I think we are looking at cores wrong. My experience shows that Windows alone wants to dominate more than 4 threads. Sometimes a 4 core 4 thread CPU is only running Windows processes and can't take on anything else. So now how many cores/threads does the individual game require? Figure that out and add it to the number of threads that Windows will take for itself and then you know how many total cores you need.
@Obi-Wan_Kenobi623 жыл бұрын
pretty much, you would be correct in saying games don't use 6 cores (well they do but put that aside) but the REST of your computer DOES use more than 6 cores, you'll never see your CPU maxed out but task switching is what hurts your "smoothness".

What do you guys say about people like me with a 5950x and a GTX 970 @1080p 60 Hz monitor who feels its fine? Honestly I am fine lowering details, even all the way to low if necessary, but bad frame pacing or the CPU making the game unplayable has no resolution for the problem other than throwing more money at the CPU. So far the GTX 970 has not failed me in finding a setting that a CPU can keep up with playably. I thought Back 4 Blood would be the game that finally breaks my system, but even my 4c8t laptop with at GTX 1050 runs that adequately, which is an AAA game. I wonder if my upgrade to Ryzen 9 5xxxx series was worthwhile from a gaming perspective. I run a 1080px60Hz monitor plus 1024x768 and 1280x1024 monitor setup on my ryzen 9,but did not when iwas running my Core i5 3570k

Legit had this experience. Old warhorse of a 8350 paired with 780ti classified was beautiful albeit very dated, but still great for it's age. Butter on a lot of games up until the past few years. Move up to this year, 780 ti dies. Regretting that I didn't buy a newer card a few years ago when prices were realistic. Then snagged a gently used rx 480 8gb card for $200. Still smooth on the old warhorse fx8350. Find a great deal on a ryzen 3 2200g, msi gaming pro with 8gb(quickly upgraded to 32gigs because this was a place holder build.) CHOP CITY AS SOON AS I SWITCH OVER MY 480 AND TRY TO RETIRE THE FX8350 Quickly pulled the trigger on an r7 5800x, asrock b550m steel legend and a plethora of necessity because of the bad experience. Smooth as butter again. Was it the cores? Clock speed? Because on paper the ryzen 3 g2200 is better than the fx8350. The experience however was anything but better when it came to gaming. Every game micro stuttered miserably.

Ryzen 5 7600 would be enough to get full potential out of those cards in 1080p, but if you want extra cores just to be safe then 7700 or i5-13500 or even 13600kf (if you're not scared about its temps) are solid options.

My son went from I7 920 to R7 3700X. Massive difference! 6 months later he upgraded to R9 5900X because he likes to have 25 chrome tabs open, multiple apps running in background, and playing games at 1440p with 3070Ti. I asked him if he noticed a difference in the I7, R7, and R9. He just smiled and said the R7 was much, much better but I got tired of having to close programs just to open another. Now I can run as many apps as I want, and it doesn't affect my games. When I asked what he meant, he said everything is just smoother without pauses and stutters. There is a difference.

Absolutely agree with you guys, ive got an i5 9600k pair with gtx 1080ti and many games sometimes getting stuttering so i have to close some programs (even if i dont use many anyway) to eliminate the stutter and improve gameplay in general. lots of games today use 90 percent plus cpu utilization in 6 core cpus and even if you play games that use 70 percent cpu when adding all the back round programs you will still get stutter/performance issues in some games. I think a 12 core cpu today is the best choice for gaming and everything else.

Hi, I've a question in mind for quite some time, maybe I get a chance to get an answer here. I actually couldn't find any review about non-k series. Since the headroom for overclocking is crimped over the generations, what's the actual difference between 11900 and 11900K besides overclocking? Is there anything to do with the 1% low, frametime, responsiveness? I wonder non-k series chip like 12900f 12700f will start to shine.

It didn't even have bloatware or a third party AV installed and I don't click and install anything and the improvement was... Wow!!! It is sooo much more responsive. The OS install was about 2.5 yrs old. Under the circumstances, I'm not sure I'd notice a CPU upgrade from a R5 to R7 or similar. Software can slow things down a lot. I will now be thinking about doing a fresh install every end of year from now on.

Is my i7-12700 enough for my rtx 4080 or should I upgrade? If so to what? I7-13700? I9-13900? I play demanding aaa games btw, I ask because here there is a difference in price between the i7 and i9, € 449,- for the i7, € 615,- for the i9, so about a little over € 150,- And not spending too much if it makes little difference is always a good thing. It's difficult for me to tell how well my 12700 does for my 4080, I came from a i5 3330 with a gtx 1050 for crying out loud, everything somewhat modern is a crazy improvement to that, there's no comparison, ofcourse my new PC is much better, but is it all it can be, or can it be better? (Without changing the gpu, not interested in the 4090, way too expensive compared to my 4080 plus too much power draw too, liked the 4080 for the improvements it had over the 3080 and that it did so on the same, or often less power usage, I think that's the major win of rtx 40 series, the efficiency so cards run at the same or lower power and give more performance compared to their predecessor of 30 series) (atleast for the 4070 and up, below 4070 sucks compared to their 30 series predecessors sadly). Initially had a different gpu, went for the i7-12700 because I already doubted how great 4 or 6 (powerful) cores would continue to do, as the i7 has 8 performance cores, so I skipped the i5's and i3's, for my old gpu my i7-12700 seemed good, but I wonder whether my 4080 does better with a bit more juice.

It's not about "will it run?" Because it'll run. It's about how smooth you want it to run as well as how much overhead do you want for background stuff or multitasking. Remember when we had to close everything else out on our PCs to game and you couldn't do anything else while playing? Yeah we don't need to do that so much anymore. We can game and stream or have Chrome open with the walk-through of the game and KZbin in the background and maybe a dozen other tabs also open and have Discord open and anti-virus running and a video rendering, etc. We don't need to worry about any of that going on and our game having hiccups because of everything happening all at once. It doesn't make the game better, it makes the experience better.

However, there are other types of benchmarks which relate to actual realistic uses. This is what Linus’ benchmarks lack, but we still shouldn’t forget it’s usefulness

Lets be realistic here in our current computer user scenarios/pricing/usage case. "I Want" the best new build 5900X/50, Or 12900k... 3 to $5000 "OMG!" Gaming/productivity PC. Now here me out about how I got my Ryzen 5800x just recently.. A year ago in October 2020 bought a Asus tuf B550 gaming plus and upgraded ram to 32 gigs of CL 16 3600 mhz. Black Friday 2021 at Micro Center just got the Ryzen 5800X for $299.00. When the Ryzen CPU's were first launched they were very expensive and wasn't worth the wallet busting price. I don't really need the extra cores past 8/16 with this generation. (single core IPC is amazing!) Zen 6000 or whatever comes later might be a better upgrade path going forward and be more ready after this "Human Malware Virus/scalping/supply" settles down. Tech does make a good point about getting the most for your money and totally agree with him there. But reality still slaps me in the face and I can get by with a little less if I try. Being patient and finding good deals still make good sound practical sense. P.S. Intel 2600k and AMD Ryzen 2700X previous upgrades.

I would like to see bench marks where instead of a clean build with most if not all background task disabled, the machine is running all the usual stuff running, i.e. a mail client open, a remote desk connection, several google browser windows with multiple tabs each. then see how the cinebench, 3dmark scores change. see how 16gb, 32gb and 64gb affect, the scores. I don't only run games. most of the time I'm using it for work related and the game is the secondary interest. Now, I have a 5900x with 64GB but only a 3070 ti, would like a 6900xt or 3090, but as I said, gaming is not the primary use. The current gpu cost are just too out of wack.
