I am British, and was born in 1949, but I have watched a grand total of two episodes of "House," which I found to be tedious and juvenile, only a few Mr. Bean sketches (good though they are), and absolutely no films based on books for children by that Rowling woman. Rowan Atkinson is the powerhouse of Not the Nine O'Clock News, the star of Blackadder and The Thin Blue Line, and a notable one-man-show comedian: anything else is superfluous.

The two recurring jokes during this episode are whether sausage is in the dictionary and how to explain aardwark. Despite what is claimed throughout this episode, sausage was in the original dictionary. However, Dr Johnson misspelled it and and it ended up in the wrong spot which did make it hard to be found for original readers. On the other side, aardwark was not in Johnson's dictionary. The reason for this very simple - the word didn't exist in English language during Regency as it entered English language almost an century later. It came from Afrikaans language originating in South Africa.

This episode is based on a real-life incident from the 19th Century, in which the philosopher and historian Thomas Carlyle sent the only copy of his monumental History of the French Revolution to fellow philosopher John Stuart Mill, only to have him return days later to tell him that one of his servants had mistakenly used the manuscript to light a fire. Undaunted, Carlyle proceeded to rewrite the entire work from scratch, and published the completed book in 1837. However, modern consensus is that Mill intentionally burned the manuscript in a fit of jealous rage, having tried and failed to produce a similar work on the Revolution for many years, and concocted the story as a cover.

I see that the BBC has gone round claiming copyright over Blackadder and has youtube accounts closed down as a result. However I think all licence payers are the owners. We are forced to pay for the TV licence whether we like it or not, whether we watch the BBC or not. We are assumed to be guilty automatically if we do not have a licence, I believe that this is the only area of UK law where one is presumed guilty. Blackadder is fantastic, really funny, excellent acting and comedy. But I resent being forced to pay for it and I resent even more the arrogance of the BBC claiming copyright.

Utter Rubbish. "Forced to pay a license fee"? Not even remotely close - you have to pay a license fee if you own a TV. If you don't have a TV you don't pay, simple as. "Assumed to be guilty in UK law"? Again, utterly false. They will assume you have a TV (with excellent grounds - 97% of households own a TV) and have every right to try to get people they suspect to have a TV, to pay. They don't have the right come into your house, and in order for there to be legal action they would have to prove you didn't have a TV. The police may search your premises if you are suspected of acting illegally (i.e. of having a TV but no license), but that's true of any crime. You aren't at any point "assumed to be guilty". Even if the licensee fee WERE obligatory, that would still be utterly irrelevant to the ownership of the Copyright. The BBC produced this, of course it's their copyright.

Michael McLean You don't need the licence to own a TV; it's only if you watch or record live television as it is being broadcast. So if you only watch DVDs or non-live streaming services like Netflix you don't need one. Hell, you don't even need a licence if you watch everything on BBC iPlayer, 4OD, etc (as long as you don't watch the live streams).

A TV license is required if and only if you watch live broadcast TV ... irrespective of what devices you own, or what you use to watch the live broadcast, or what channel's live stream you're watching.) Pericombobulation has me discombobulated about its peripheral prefix. I suppose that could be "coherence at the perimeter" or "outer stitch". At least that's the image the word's parts sum to in my head--whether or not its existence is sanctioned by inclusion in the OED--though I can't imagine what Johnson would have made of that or such a word. Would he laugh, roar, freeze-over in utmost contumely, or droop in pedagogic melancholy?
