And now you have sawdust in the back of the speaker lol, great build, quick tip when covering with vinyl cut your sides on the 45 and pre adhere the vinyl to the surface overlapping 3-4mm round to edge to be glued that way the vinyl doesn't shrink away from edges over time and doesn't snag and catch at the join, then hit it with a hairdryer to give the adhesive back a decent hold on what seems to be untreated mdf. Keep the vids coming you've got great talent.

Re-watching this video using my new C-Note speakers. Props to Kirby for some cool scenes and tunes to make them sing to. These speakers are honestly one of the best ways, I can think of to spend $100. To buy separately they're $230 from Parts Express and you'd still have to build a cabinet. I set mine 6 ft apart and stood 6 ft away, only using a 2024+ amp and I am blown away by how good these things sound. These are reference quality in my little audio world. The amp is maxed out and the input is at 85%. Bass set to full and treble at 70% I put in an extra capacitor from the tweeter, as you can read in their forums. No idea if it did anything, don't care, these things sound fantastic. Mine are finished in Carnival Orange. What can I say, I like Orange. Best $100 you'll ever spend. Next is the proper amplifier, they've had a week of being broken in on the 2024+ 5*

I love how you didn't go crazy with the glue. I've seen KZbinrs go way overboard and then spend a bunch of time wiping and sanding all the extra off.

That's not bad at all man. I've used the same vinyl and it looks better than I predicted. Not a premium look, but certainly something that would pass as a budget speaker from a big name manufacturer. You're choosing some nice beefy looking amps too. If I wanted to improve it for cheap I'd look into some screws that have nicer looking heads. But even simple wood screws look good since it's black on black.

Very nice. I like the covering for it too. This was my first speaker build about a month ago. Just went with spray paint for the finish. Couple coats of primer with 4 coats of black. I screwed up though and was in a hurry to finish. On the last few coats of paint I got sawdust in the finish. Instead of sanding and repainting I just leaned into it and added little bit more sawdust then painted. Had a dimpled look that I've come around to. I think for the next one I build I'll do that from start to get a more of an effect.

Tip: to speaker builders when cutting vinyl wrap around edges such as the port or driver cutouts, also use a new blade, as even a slightly used blunt knife will tear and spoil the cut.

Great build. My only comment would be to build the crossover with one of the perforated boards that Parts Express sells. This makes the crossover smaller and neater.

my only criticism.. Buy some nice looking Pan head screws for the speakers. The screws you use take so much away from the final product. If you wanna look especially slick.. find some flush Allen head screws.

, wow, there's gonna be a significant difference between the low end on the speaker with the amp module. that thing took up half the available air space inside the box. could you have made that speaker deeper ? should you have? I think I would have made them both about 2 to 4 inches deeper because of the size of the plate amp

I built this kit as well, I decided to primer and paint the set though and after seeing this I wish I had just used a sticker like you. However I used a perforated crossover board to build the crossover on and mounted that using standoffs and countersunk screws in the base of the speakers. I prefer this method for the clean looks however it is never really seen so is rather pointless, but there is another modification I made that is said to improve sound quality according to the C Note designer Chris Perez. In a few forum posts he mentioned that "adding a 0.22 uF capacitor in parallel with L2" nearly eliminates a "resonant peak" according to simulations. I don't really understand how this works but with a 99 cent capacitor from Parts Express you can theoretically improve the sound quality of the speakers so I added them. For those of you think about making your own set of C Note speakers here is the forum thread: techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/tech-talk-forum/1321397-c-note-mt-bookshelf-speaker-kit-pair-other-kits/page3

you do such amazing work, then continually use the ugliest screws to hold your speakers in place. it is such a distraction from the overall clean look of the build. regular wood screws just look like junk holding those speakers in place. kills me every time

Craig Hobbs, I would like to know where to get some screws that aren’t ugly. When I built my speakers all I could locate at the hardware store that weren’t bright gold in color were some nasty drywall screws. I was hoping for some thing with an Allen head but those aren’t available with a wood thread as far as I’ve found and I don’t want to deal with putting threaded inserts in the back of my baffles.
@hardcorecap

You can get them at your local home depot or lowes. Maybe even ace. Machine screws with threaded inserts would look more aesthetic in my opinion.

Funny, I wanted to tell the same thing... almost. The screws are not ugly themselves, but they don't fit. Using the right diameter of the screw-head would have sunken them flat with the speaker-frames screw holes. Second, even the good old Braun, Grundig or Saba used vinyl adhesive to cover cheap MDF frames, it isn't you, Kirby... I hope that kit adds some money to the channel, as you deserve it. But please, stay to yourself and continue to build nice speakers from nice wood as you did many times before.
