This is how you tell a great pilot like Guido from merely a good one. The inputs just kept on coming, from the unusual approach pattern to bad weather to tight banking, and he just managed it in one flow. Master!

Thank you. I am not a master, I am just a well trained pilot. The point I want to make with this video is that the simulator training often does not cover "full" circling approaches, sometimes only a series of 45 degree turns. I a jet at low altitude. (the circling minimal) it is easy to loos speed control and a stall at low altitude is not recoverable, at least not in a jet. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

It’s easy to watch Mr. Warnecke’s videos purely for their entertainment value. For me, it’s like playing a video game with all the digital displays and flashing lights while watching a travelogue. He hops from one aircraft type to another and applies the same skill level and technique in each aircraft type as if he had flown that type all his life. How does he remain current and qualified in so many types? Student pilots should watch Mr. Warnecke’s videos as teaching moments to see how flying should be done. I hope that everyone appreciates the craftmanship. I am reminded of the words of my piano teacher, “Watch. This is how it’s done right.”

Thank you for your kind words. I’m just another, well trained pilot. And as every pilot I make mistakes, on every flight. Our task as pilots is the minimize errors and risks, and try to avoid repeating the same error. I also wanted to show decision making: the tail wind component on runway 08 increased to an unsafe value on final approach, so it’s a circle to land on the other runway. Even if runway 08 is very long and you can land 10 times on it. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

I could not agree more! In a Caravan unser this weather conditions certainly not a problem. In a Lear Jet at night, with weather at circling minimums - it is risky. Thank you for a wonderful flight down memory lane. As a sixteen year old in the summer of 1964, my non-stop return Aer Lingus flight to the States from Ireland was interrupted by a diversion to Goose Bay for mechanical reasons. While we waited for a maintenance crew to repair an engine on the 707, the “stewardesses” provided a visual treat to several ground-bound military below the rear door. The outside temperature must have risen several degrees because the ground crew had shed their parkas by the time we were cleared to leave. I can tell you that international relations were cemented that day between Canada and Eire.

Quite Interesting! Goose Bay is still a diversion airport. Once I had a sad experience as a passenger. On a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to JFK one passenger fell ill, crew diverted to Goose while first aid was given on board but pax died basically when we touched down. After the deceased passenger was offloaded and the widow left the aircraft via provisional stairs, we continued the flight. That’s part of aviation too. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

What I always enjoy is the evidence of being well ahead of the aircraft, with smooth considered control inputs and great situation awareness. You're very modest Sir, this is more than good training. Do you subscribe to the Defined Minimum Maneuvering Speed (DMMS) idea for circuit work? It's a concept more typical in airline flying, and championed on YT by Dan Gryder in his "Probable Cause" series.
@GuidoWarnecke10 ай бұрын
Thank you Hank. Speed is an important consideration when flying low and slow, which is in essence what a circuit is. Why is it important? Recovery from a stall/spin at low altitude is almost impossible. And we train stall recovery only from a safe altitude, which is not the “real” thing. What Dan does is a good thing: to make you aware of safe speeds. Not too fast and not too slow. On final approach, typically light aircraft are too fast and touch down halfway down the runway, in turn to final they are sometimes to slow for the bank angle especially if the pilot pulls back on the controls to maintain altitude. Deadly consequences, spin/stall close to the ground. While we fly jets to the knot on speed, in light aircraft you can get a bit more relaxed. As a rule of thumb: maneuvering speed in turns 1.6x the stall speed and on final 1.3 times the stall speed. Not much faster, not much slower. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido Please consider subscribing to my channel - that would help a lot. Your support is highly appreciated!

@@GuidoWarnecke Thanks Guido, I'm a long time follower. Linking Dans video on DMMS here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZawf3qanLNqpNU I'm primarily a sailplane pilot now, and our application of this philosophy for approch speed is "safe speed" near the ground at 1.5 x Vs + 1/2 observed wind speed. This gives us the DMMS scenario with energy for wind gradient transition in the last 100' on approach.

great video: The first breakout from the approach 08 to the left : what is the standard in terms off how many seconds and how many degrees to the side ?
@GuidoWarnecke10 ай бұрын
You have to stay in the protected airspace for circling. For details Google the topic. Quite complex. In essence: only start the turn when you have the airport in sight and make sure you keep it at all times in sight. Turn right or left as specified in the approach chart. If there are mountains on one side, almost certain it would prohibit circling to that side. A 30-45deg break off is a good start, adjust for wind. Good practice is to fly the approach on autopilot on NAV mode, set the heading bug the the restored break off heading and then when it’s time hit the HDG mode on the autopilot. You want to fly this in the autopilot in bad weather, because you need to look out, contrail airspeed and bank angle. That all while VERY close to the ground. Careful when setting full flaps. Most of the aircraft start to balloon up (climb) and in arguably weather you may end up in the clouds. If that happens immediately start a missed approach with a climbing turn towards the runway and then sequence yourself in the published missed approach procedure for the original runway before you started the break off. For safety you can also ask ATV for help and request radar vectors from them. They will always help you - safety goes before perfection of “by the books procedures”. Important is that you remain in CJ Teil of the aircraft and vertical and lateral obstacle clearance is assured at all times. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido Please Consider subscribing to my KZbin channel - your support is greatly appreciated!

Hi Captain, I have been busy, but it is always rewarding to see your videos. I have seen videos of accidents when pilots were not able to do the Circling approaches. Of course it is easier to do this at "small" airplanes, but when are Jets or Airlines, a difficult increase. So just a question: of the 3/4/5 (?), which is the more important: 1) keeping the "parallel runway" at sight? 2) the timing of the circle initiation (how many miles before the reference runway)? 3) speed? 4) heading for circle initiation ? 5) ? I am not a pilot, just a simflyer, so not sure if things above make sense. Always very good landings. Thks
@GuidoWarnecke9 ай бұрын
Hi Luis, the circling is a critical maneuver. What is the main reason for a circling approach? In most cases, there is only one instrument approach available but for example the wind is as such that you need to land on the opposite runway. Luckily, now with GPS approaches getting ore and more common, you have approaches to ALL runways. Remember: an ILS requires very expensive installation in the ground. GPS is only satellites, nothing to install. To your questions: 1) you have to keep the landing runway and the airport in sight at all times. When I did my sigle pilot jet rating, had to do a right hand circling. Why? When you sit in the left seat, it is more difficult to look out of the right window and keep the runway in sight. If a circling is to the right, depends on the situation at the airport, where the obstacles are, cities, other parts of the airport. Left is preferred, but it can be right too. 2) Timing a distance: google details about circling approaches. The distance of protected airspace around the airport for circling approaches is limited and well defined. Only a couple of miles. Remember: you will be VERY LOW during the circling and obstacles can be close! The distance to the airport when you start the circling depends also on the visibility. If the visibility is low and you cannot see the airport, then you cannot start the circling! 3) The speed is also precisely described in the circling approach. Google details. The principle: do not fly to slow to stall the aircraft in the turns. Do not fly too fast to make your turning radius too big and get into a too great distance from the airport. Typically Vref +30 knots is a good and safe circling speed. 4) The initial heading is around 45 degrees. You do not want to do less, because you want to get into a position parallel to the runway. You do not want to fly more than 45 degrees to get too far away from the airport and loose the airport out of sight. It is advisable to fly a circling approach on autopilot, especially when single pilot. Fly in HDG heading mode for directional control. Keep the autopilot on until you have extended the flaps full for landing. Many aircraft have the tendency to climb if you extend flaps. So it can happen (if you are not on autopilot and do not have full attention) that the aircraft climbs back into the clouds while you extend the flaps. You loose sight of the runway - and the circling is over... ! You cannot just descent again to get back below the clouds. If you lose sight of the runway, you continue a climbing turn towards the airport and fly the missed approach procedure of the original runway you did the "normal" approach. I hope that gives more clarification. Which sim do you fly Luis? Happy Landings, Capt. Guido
@luisreis32029 ай бұрын
@@GuidoWarnecke , thks a lot for your quite extensive and interesting answer. I learnt a lot.with it. The left seat difficulty is quite interesting. And of course GPS instead ILS. I made a comment about GPS at a comment in another video you did. As I am developing a free App to help less experienced simflyers to keep situational awareness (it is mainly a Maps based App, but I also get Data from the aircraft to issue some alerts, and also using charts when they are available), I fly with the 3 simulators: Flight Simulator 2020, X-Plane and P3D. I integrate the three at my app. But most of the times I fly MSFS 2020. The aircraft, I fly more are the Kodiak, the Cessna Caravan (I have two G1000 panels that improve a lot the way we fly), the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. Thks one again for your patience, and I will google more as you suggested.

Hi Matthew, I use a condensed check list, based on the manufacturers checklist. I write only the challenge, not the response. There is never a reason to fly an uncoordinated turn. Sloppy flying from my side, but the “ball” was never far out. And speed was 100kts, at least 40kts above stall speed. As you may know (or may not know), the rudder of the Caravan is sensitive to speed and power changes. As a side note: I perceive your comment as condescending.
