Chris, your channel has been one of my best discoveries on KZbin lately; I just cannot stop binge-watching it. What makes it unique is not all wrenching and craftsmanship (which you are great at); it’s those lovely interruptions when you are with your beautiful wife, your little funny puppy, your travels, and how all of you enjoy life. Keep it up, brother; you all are amazing!

I love old wreckers. When I owned a full-service gas station, I had a 1 1/2-ton 1952 Chevy with a homemade bed, Tulsa wench, slings, and a 235 six cylinder. I made a big mistake when I traded it for a Triumph chopper back in the seventies. I think you are a very talented mechanic; you are extremely blessed with Jen. Most men will never attain the riches (Jen and your talents) that you possess. I was so selfish and prideful when I was your age, I never realized how rich I was until death took my first (killed by drunk driver) and second (died from LUPUS) wives away. I found God through the tragedies and prayed that I would have my family back. God is good, and He has a sense of humor, He sent me a third young wife with four kids. I joke to people that you have to be careful of what you pray for.

As I learned from the veteran mechanics and auto body guys who all suffered from some sort of knee,spine,elbow,neck,lung, eye and kidney issues. Appreciate all the options you have for safety now. It takes a few minutes or the cost of spending a few dollars to get the proper gear and will save you a lifetime of agony.

Superdad2150. I too drove wreckers, 1971-1985 . Official police Garage in los Angeles. We used to clean our " Visibars " as we used to call them, regularly. Removing grime on the plastic lenses was not difficult. Inside and out also gave you a chance to lube the motor and inspect the power belt turning the lights. Once clean they were beautiful and bright. Made some great Police friends, always had our backs. We kept the roads open, that's what was most important in LA. 14 years 6pm-6am You are right , I miss is too. Never miss a video.

I'm proud of you for bringing the wrecker back out of retirement. Please be extra careful when slinging and lifting loads, many trained experienced recovery professionals have been hurt or killed using substandard equipment carelessly. If you check, you will find that the weight limit for wheel lifts on older wreckers is much lower than what the sling is rated for. The wheel lift was meant for small front drive cars, or full size cars towed from the rear. The sling is the primary lifting device here. Old warehouse conveyor belts are a good source for sling rubber. Always check the thickness and composition of the rubber as well as age before using it as sling material. The alternating blinker side marker action is standard for older GM vehicles. We used to add a brake light wire to the front blinkers so that when running without lights on, the blinkers would light up when the brakes were applied. Good luck with that awesome wrecker. All the best to Jenn and Gus.
@montanajoe92582 жыл бұрын
Great job Chris, love this project. Oil pressure switch should be connected to fuel pump relay. It isn’t designed to provide enough current to run the fuel pump. Also there is a momentary (2-3 second) fuel pump on when the ignition is turned on to charge the fuel rail. If the fuel pump relay does not see oil pressure after start, it will shut down. This was probably all disconnected when the fuel pump relay wiring was bypasses by the previous owner. The oil pressure permission for the fuel pump relay was designed to prevent a fire in a wreck. If the engine quits running, the fuel pump will shut down so it won’t feed a fire, very important if you are unconscious and can’t flip a manual switch.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow2 жыл бұрын
Great info and points you bring up! Thank you! And yeah good point about a manual switch. I thought about putting one in but decided Ultimately I'd like to have the relay hooked backup.

@mopargssr8 ай бұрын
Whenever you’re towing a vehicle from the rear, the steering wheel on the tow vehicle needs ratchet strapped or tied by the seatbelt, the steering column lock isn’t strong enough to rely on to keep the wheels straight. Also, you want the sling bars parallel with the ground so the towed vehicle can’t ride up the sling straps in an emergency panic stop. And last but not least, always run a safety chain from the sling to the boom in case the wire rope breaks. I have to say, I love your channel Chris, it’s definitely my new favorite! I love how thorough you are and how you bring testing and diagnosis into the videos and not just parts changing

When you get a chance, check the frame crossmember rivets by the steering gearbox to see if they're tight. Just have Jen turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the crossmember. It will move back and forth if they're loose. Pretty common on high mileage trucks. It causes it to wander on the highway if loose.

When I started driving a tow truck I started with a sling truck, a sling truck is really handy when you have a wheel that is broke off, or dangling, I would highly recommend getting a hold of AAA and see if they will send you a book on what vehicles can be hooked with a sling truck, and what vehicles can't, also tells you how fast you can tow a vehicle from the front when it's rear wheel drive or vice versa, most of the vehicles that you've got can go 25 miles an hour for up to five miles I believe it is, I'm a little rusty

I towed in the 1980’s with a sling and we always put a 4x4 piece of wood on top of the chains and below the bumper to protect it. We also used J hooks and chain connected to sling sling, the slack went up and connected to the top. Your right the rule was the driving wheels off the ground and with front wheel drive the J hooks went upside down. ProTip: We always kept box/cardboard behind the front seat to lay on the ground to do the hookup in the rain. 😊

Use a 4x4 to separate the chain from the frame. The big problem is that frame. I worked for three towing companies in the Philadelphia area so all those roads you’re driving I did a long time ago. My favorite wrecker was a 3500 Cummins 1994 with a 24 inch frame extension from Frank’s in New York. The frame extension was for the tunnel box. It was a 4x4 and I drove that Old Gal and was happy as a lark. From running Copart to Quakertown to getting PGW vans down in North Philly on a Saturday morning early when the snow was falling. Great Times!!! Marry that frame with some new stock fix the control head on the wheel lift and replace the straps and you’ll have a good little wrecker and engine hoist for a long time!!
