Excellent video. After owning 3 C4's and 2 C5's I can attest to your observations. Each generation has benefits and issues. Personal preferences on styling and performance differences are important factors. The C5 hydroformed frame, rear mounted transmission, and interior space make the C5 a better choice with all things else being equal. One thing I did not personally care for in the C5 was its rear styling. Can't go wrong with either generation if one carefully does their pre-purchase research and inspection. I feel your channel is the very best C5 source on YT and thank you for your honest and detailed videos.

I agree with the rear end styling meme. It's worse on the C6, and the C7 and C8 don't even register as Vettes to me. Why? That rear reminds me of an ex's FAT ASS... Hate it. Tradition is now out the door, for a phony Lambo oragami look. YUCK!!!!!!

@@jaws2003 I'm 70 and have a C5 and a 1999 Miata. The C5 is a little harder to get in than the Miata but its not really a problem. My wife has had both knees replaced and doesn't have a problem either. Of course its harder to get in than our suv but so much more fun once you do. Also the visibility is great on the C5. It doesn't have a blind spot like so many other cars.

Great advice! I knew I wanted a C5 but didn’t dig in to all the differences between the years. I just got lucky when I found a clean 2001 that had some of typical repairs already done and a few nice upgrades. I love how we all have made these cars different with our personal changes and add ons.

I've owned a 94, 96, 04, 08 and now a 2014 Corvette. I agree with most of the observations. But I'll make a few observations from my experience. The C4 has more compact outside proportions than the C5. I think it looks better, more like a proper sports car. However, because of this, the C5 is much roomier and easier to get in and out of. Once you are in the C4 seat, it's actually quite comfortable. Driving around town or cruising on the highway you don't notice a lot of difference in performance between the C4 and C5. The C4 has good grunt off the line with it's 335 ft/lbs of torque. As speed increases the C4 runs out of breath much sooner than the C5 and the C5 will pull away. The C5 tends to wallow in the turns where the C4 is much more stable. Put a set of z06 sway bars on the C5 front and back and it cures this. A lot of the repair issues are related to mileage. A C4 garage queen with 30.000 miles is going to have about the same repair needs as a 1998 C5 with 80,000 miles. and the C4 is going to be a lot cheaper. All in all every iteration of the Corvette is better than the last. My C7 is the best Corvette I've ever owned. It's the fastest, handles the best, has the best interior materials, etc. But every Corvette has certain charms and you really need to experience each one to determine which is the right one for you.

Good points, sir! I want a C7 some day but I love the C5 and 6 gauges - and dislike the C7's. Despite that, some day when prices are lower (when the market is flooded with C8's and pandemic pricing is behind us) I will get one because the 7 chassis is quite a bit better!

I used your expertise from watching your videos to make my decision to buy it. (Thank you) The car had 30000 miles on it, I have put about 2000miles on it so far and love it. Owner of 2004 convertible, stock, 40,000 miles and it runs like the day I bought it. People who whine about the interior are just missing the mechanics of the ride. If the interior is what your after buy a Beamer or Mercedes but let me know how she's holding up after 18 years. Power window motors is the only repairs other than maintenance, change all fluids especially bleed out all the old brake fluid when replacing pads.

Hello, I presently own a C4 (1994), and a C5 (2002). The C5 hands down is a FAR SUPERIOR automobile. Moving the Transaxle in the rear made for a MUCH more comfortable interior... The list goes on & on... When deciding to purchase a Corvette, like most things in life "cheap is expensive", do your homework, spend a little bit more, be patient and in the long run you will get what are looking for... GOOD LUCK...

Great observations! I have owned 69 435hp 427 Believe it or not with an automatic transmission! That was my introduction to Corvette! But that was my only C3. I sold that to get a Lingenfelter type 88 383 C4 (The guy I bought it from used many of his parts but not all) then I Vortech super charged it and it was fun!!! But then as far as Corvette I had 2 more C4s, a90 convertible and a 92 coupe with a six speed but they were stock. After all the racing fun I found my 98 C5 is really the best overall balance even with it being stock, but it Has to have a six speed! I actually did a super charged 71 Camaro in between my stock C4s it was in the November 07 issue of Chevy high-performance (in the spotlight, 25 local heroes) and that was super charged as well. So I was just looking for something simple and easy and the 98 was perfect. But now I’m starting to get itchy again.... I probably should just forget it, and see a good dermatologist...😂😂😂

I bought my C5 1) Because. There is way more interior room especially the foot area since the transmission was moved to the rear. 2) The LS1, 3) there is way more 6 speeds available than the C4 platform and the was no way in heck that I was going to have another automatic sports car ( I also have 1992 Camaro that I bought when I was 18 because it was black V8 and has T-Tops) 4) the fact that the targa top has latches instead of bolts to make removing it so much easier. 5) it’s the 30mpg that I get on the interstate at 85 mph.

Enjoyed the video but as a C4 fan just wanted to point out the C4 LT1 went to 345 ft/lbs of torque after 1992. Some people said on a dyno they created 5 more wheel horsepower too but Chevy kept the rating 300hp. In 1996 all 6-speed C4s had the 330hp LT4 which actually put down more horsepower to the wheels than stock 345hp C5s did. The C5 is undoubtedly a better performer BUT let’s not forget the C4 was kicked out of SCCA racing because companies like Porsche thought it was unfair how the C4 with world class handling and plenty of power dominated. Around 1992 Chevy was improving their manufacture techniques and the 1992 Thirdgen F-Bodies were tighter and had less rattles than the 80s IROCs. My 1993 Corvette feels tight and has no rattles. It feels very stiff and handles great unless you pop the roof off. That was an advantage of the C5 was no flex when topless. Styling-wise I liked the C5. It reminded me of the RX7 of that era but the rear end that bubbled out with big oval tail lights was not our favorite as GM fans. I always found the C4 tail lights to be more “classic”. We were also bummed as GM fans when they got rid of the pop up lights for the C6. The values are switching, Mecum early this year 30k mile C4s from the 90s were bringing more money than similar condition C5 and C6. The C4 is turning the corner on classic and C5 and C6 are used Vettes…. This recession is softening values on all Vettes. C5 owners are still asking high$$$ but they aren’t getting it. A friend trying to sell a C5 has marked it down $7k and still can’t sell it. C4 also gets a lot of attention for its quirks like the clam shell hood, back flipping tail-lights and it’s fighter jet cockpit…. It’s hard to get in a C4 but it feels like no other car. The C5 was made to feel like a normal car and is a better daily for sure. As far as reliability. Technically Corvette specific techs have pointed out to me the LT1 is a more stout motor with no service bulletins regarding engine failure unlike the LS1 which does have potential for lifter and oil pressure issues. The Optispark is supposed to be changed every 80k miles and you’ll never have a problem. It’s a tough job and amateurs don’t get the seals right so they get frustrated doing the job 4-5 times blaming the Optispark. An experienced tech can do it in 4-hours and it’ll last a decade. You do have to do the water pump too but it’s just regular service. Ultimately the C5 is more modern and can be made into a car that can hang with modern muscle more easily. The C4 is a great cruiser and a great driving experience that will draw a crowd every time you lift that clamshell hood at a cars and coffee. There are some LT1 tuners out there but obviously support for the LS is unbelievable. There’s certain year C5s that have unobtainable suspension parts and brake modules as well. With C4s the biggest issue is if you ever need an ECM you have to find a used one…. C4 and C5 vettes generally are reliable and cheap to fix though compared to other performance cars of that era.

Actually NO LT1 or LT4 was rated 345 lbs/ft they were LT1 1992 330 lb/ft 1993-1996 340 lb/ft LT4 340 lb/ft

My mistake, you are correct I was off by 5ft lbs I just noticed in the video the C4 was downplayed a bit. He used the one year lower torque number and most images seemed to be the older, slower ones when comparing visually to a C5. He also compared used the 350hp LS rating when the first 4 years was 345hp. The LT4 was not even mentioned let alone the ZR1 which at one point was at C5 prices. They’ve gone up a bit now. A really low mile one sold over $80k this year. It’s not a straight comparison video with no bias.

Me and my girlfriend each have 95 c4s and the main reason was price and there's no inspection where we live for cars 95 and lower.we also planned on driving them alot so a newer vette like the c5 would be kind of a waste of money.i put 8000 on mine she put 15 thousand on hers in the last 12 months.i definitely agree the c5 is a better performer and has the edge on looks.but I would be to concerned about it getting beat up the way we drive.our c4s were so cheap it was like a second used car.basicly paid less than 8 grand for each of them.we each have other everyday cars but we never drive them unless it's rain or snow or taking trash to the dump.lots of room under the clamshell hood for repairs which I've done alot! The opti isn't so bad as long as it's 95 96 vented style.also thread lock the rotor screws and seal the cap with some black rtv to keep her dry.putting a little snorkel on the water pump weep hole to direct coolant around the opti helps in case of that failure.

I owned a 1994 C4 Convertible and I gave it to my son it was a dream, but the OPTI Spark is a deal breaker I had to keep the car dry and as long as I did it was very dependable but if it rained then it was hard to start even though it was covered and If I got caught in the rain it would start to stall. and the EVAP Canister cause major Gas Vapors to seep out because it clogged the PURGE Line.

Sound reasoning on your part. The style and design are of course subjective, as most aspects of choosing a Toy . For me. living in a remote area north 0f the49th one of the important considerations to go with the “General Mayhem” was Parts availability. Having considered Maserati ,Porsche even Ford/Jaguar, I dreaded the thought of having to drive 3-4hrs one way to have my Toy serviced. I absolutely agree with you on the styling aspect, though I went for the C6 Convertible. Having owned a C3 454 LS6 when I was young I am only to well aware of the shortcomings of Body on Frame Corvettes The C5/C6 and later are a vast improvement in all but the price categories. Another well done Video.

You would not believe the hidden torque and horsepower you can get with adjusting timing, wot tuning, transmission tuning that includes reducing torque management. GM bogged the car with allot of crap believe it or not. 95's and 96s are capable of much more especially torque once you tune it.

Love the C5 more and more. It was my first pick, then liked the C6 and C7. I started saving for a C7 Stingray then realized they’re way too expensive, today a good used one w average miles is about $50k, conversely a good 2002 C5 base coupe is about $22k Yes the interior isn’t close to being as nice as a C7 interior but that’sOK. My current daily driver is a 2002 Lexus ES 300 which is all the luxury I need. The C5 to me has the cleanest and sleekest exterior. The C6 is more angular and less curvy In the summer of 2024 I should be ready to cherry pick a clean one or two owner, low to average miles base manual coupe w no mods (maybe exhaust). Non Z51 since I won’t be tracking it UPDATE: my savings will be put towards a 08-09 C6 base coupe manual non Z51. C6 is major improvement over the C5 both exterior and interior

I agree. I much prefer the C5 overall, but the C4 is still amazing. Not including the C4 ZR1, my favorite attainable C4 models are the 1996 Corvette Grand Sport, and the 1996 Corvette LT4 Collector Edition. I don't like the lack of leg room, or room for your right foot while driving the C4. The tunnel sticks out so much, that your foot almost has to go around the wall of the tunnel to get your foot onto the drive pedal! For the C5... The (405 HP / 400 LB-FT) 2002-2004 C5 Z06, and the (350 HP / 375 LB-FT) 2002-2004 C5 Z51 MN6 are my favorite C5 models. The 2001-2004 LS1 Corvette with the automatic has (350 HP / 360 LB-FT). The 6 speed manual has the (375 LBFT). Can't go wrong with any well taken care of Corvette... I would only buy a 1995 or 1996 C4 Corvette if I were going to buy one. They had the least problems.

I would value the car vs others for sale in a 500 mile radius (assume they will sell for 90 - 95% of the asking price) and subtract the cost of the parts plus labor and paint and also subtract a margin for your effort and risk (in case something hidden is damaged) an the would get you in the ball park. Unless you specialize in repairing C5's you have to estimate these costs high or risk spending way to much when all said and done. Also - another deduction if the car will have a salvage title - that scares away a lot of buyers. If you fix a car - take tons of pics to the future buyer can see what was done and that it was done correctly.

My 1992 C4 was my dream car in aqua marine turquoise with chrome wheels chrome door handles and emblems. Unfortunately, the body flex was so bad that it would crack the removable top. I babied this car and it never saw rain. With low mileage five years later,I took it to the Chevrolet dealer for a total inspection and they found nothing wrong. I proceeded to buy a new top for $1200 only do you have the body flex crack the new top as well. I kept the car for 25 years until I sold it for $10,000 with 50,000 miles. The GM dealership never informed me the car had excessive body flex under normal driving conditions. I’m still upset about it because they knew about it and did not recall the cars for repair or stiffening. I now own a 2004 commemorative edition coupe.

The price gap between these is starting to get smaller. Honestly I prefer the look of th C4 to the C5, but the C5 is just a way better car all around. I mean it has maybe the best V8 of all time. The L98 isn't bad at all and the LT1 is pretty great, but when you're talking about the LS nothing else compares to it. I don't care if everyone is sick of hearing about it, it's awesome. Then there's the awful 4+3 Doug Nash that's in most manual C4s, and I wouldn't want any automatic Corvette. The 6 speed with the L98 in the 90-91 models is a better combo, then the 92-95 with the LT1 is even better. Step up to the 330 hp LT4 with all 6 speed 96 Vettes and it's getting pretty close to the C5, but that also means on price as well. C4s are going up while the C5s look to be getting ready to hit their bottom.

I think they will continue to come down slowly for another year or two. I could be wrong (no one has a crystal ball to know 100% for sure). Whether or not you should wait depends on your financial situation, how old you are (i.e., how much time you have left to enjoy a Corvette) and other factors that only you can decide. If you plan to keep the car for a long time, price IMO is less important. Good luck!

Subjective is right. I’ve always thought the rear end on the C5 was too tall. Looks like a big fat ass. I also prefer the rotating headlights of the C4 to the plain old pop up C5 lights. The main reason the C4 is superior looks-wise is the profile. The slope of the glass hatch merges more subtly with the rear deck, whereas the C5 looks more like a bubble sitting on top of a slab. Yes, the frame is more rigid and it handles better. The LS motor is superior to a conventional small block. The tech is superior. So what? Not everyone is into road racing and pushing their car to the limits. Many just want a basically stock vehicle. If it’s one or the other, I’m going with a C4. Ideally, I’d have both. I think you might have missed the point of owning a C4. One part of C4's beauty is in its imperfections 😉. The imperfections are what makes them so fun to drive and perfect to own 😁. If you want your overall driving experience to be clean and polished (boring that is), then of course newer Corvettes are a better choice. It really comes down to what you want from your Corvette and how much money you want to spent into something that has four wheels in it. I personally don't like the looks of C5s that much 🤔. Their rear end design and puffiness is too much for my taste. Now don't get me wrong here, but in my opinion the C5 looks like a slacked off egg 😉.
