Such a wonderful family getaway and I’m sure the whole family is thrilled to give it a fresh look. For such a small kitchen I’d say keep checking the restore and marketplace for someone selling their old cabinets. You might need to do a little finagling but ultimately you’ll end up with a nicer finished cabinet at a lower price. If possible concealed pantry storage is a huge bonus in a family getaway, we know from experience! You guys are gonna make this place beautiful, can’t wait to follow along! ✨

I WORKED IN CABINETRY FOR A DESIGN COMPANY. Option 1 works great. If you place an island later on it will be nice to have the fridge accessable where it is. Also option three we try to avoid stoves up against walls for hazard reasons. Yes its a pony wall but they are kinda tacky. I'm sure whatever option you go with will turn out great as I trust your process!

The moment I saw the cabin from the outside I envisioned a huge deck spanning the entire front of the house. I would make it the same level as the front door. I know that you're redoing the kitchen but this could be a future plan. It would be a great space for everyone to hang out.
@gardeninggrandma5247 Жыл бұрын
I like the suggestion already made to have a tall pantry cabinet. Storage is super important in a small cabin, and when you and your family, and other family members gather, you will need to have lots of room to tuck away your pantry items. I don't favor the stove being next to the sink, especially since, as you mentioned, that is next to a hallway. I think you could do the unfinished cabinets, as the cabinets would look better a solid color with the light flooring you are looking at. I'm sure you will figure it out. Thanks for taking us along this journey and I look forward to seeing the plan come together!!

I think you'll be happier with simple cabinets painted in one of the lovely shades you are so good at choosing. Maybe think about wood or butcherblock countertops? And deep drawers are so much more useful than the standard bottom cabinets.

Ah it’s so great you’re improving the cabin after enjoying it free of charge for years then it’s wonderful to give back to your aunt and the cabin itself 💗 Sure the cost of the new kitchen, flooring and shelving would be what you’d have had to pay if you had to pay for rental accommodation on your vacations so it’s definitely a worthy investment. Enjoy the fun of designing it all.

It’s cute already… but it can be even cuter with a little update. Agree … not all white in a cabin. The oars are cool above windows as curtain rods . Using prebuilt bookshelves with doors on the bottom ( made to look built in) will hide/store all those videos and games. Have fun ! A Porch the length of the house would be super cool with a swing bed on it !

What a fun project on such a beautiful lake! I'd prefer the refrigerator in same spot to avoid having little ones running or playing by a hot stove. Also may work better to grab a cold drink without getting in the way of the cook, if the fridge is not in the middle of the kitchen. More work, but less expensive and less "busy" to paint or finish the cabinets vs the hickory. Love the idea of white cabinets with butcher block for a rustic countertop. Consider deep drawers for lower cabinets, if not cost prohibitive. Sand colored walls? I'd do a table instead of an island unless you need the extra storage. Counter height is not as comfortable for elderly and little ones. Also think about doing puzzles, playing cards or board games on rainy or cold days, and using the chairs for extra seating in the living room or outside on the new deck. My suggestion for additional chairs to replace the sofa: denim is very durable and casual for slipcovers, pillows, or cushions. Everything goes with jeans, right? Ooh, white eyelet curtains!

Think vertical, more enclosed storage for food, and a flexible floor plan. If you put island seating in the space, you may be restricting furniture placement options for large gatherings. A window seat with storage that also works as banquet seating with a table is very practical. The photo featuring the natural hickory cabinets appeared to have such a design. I know you like open shelving; is this practical when the cabin is not used every day? Per the living space with the board-and-block bookcases: Should you do built-ins, I would use the entire wall and extend the top shelf over the door. You're both creative and make great effort to be good stewards of money and time; have fun researching this project and coming up with some fun ideas!!!!

This video made me tear up! My in-laws had a cabin on Diamond Lake, Cassopolis, MI. We stayed there every other weekend all summer long. My husband and then our own children grew up spending summers there! We have wonderful memories!! My father-in-law passed away and it got sold. Our kids are in college now. My heart swells when I see a cabin on a lake. It was truly the best blessing! We also refreshed it on a dime! Loved it! 😊

In the living room... would definitely get rid of the striped sofa and have the island with barstools for eating. Would seem more spacious visually. Also would have two matching dressers flanking the fireplace with floating shelves above for decor. and some books. The drawers could house lots of games and overflow, making it look less busy. Nice lamps on the dressers with some cabin decor stacked on old books, of course. What a totally fun project. As for the kitchen having smaller appliances and sinks... this is a cabin, not a home. ...so just for a weekend or extended stay its fine. Yes, I think a hutch for a pantry and decor would be awesome.

How blessed you are having access to a family cabin! We raised a large, rambunctious family and my advice to you is keep it simple and family friendly. When my kids were really little they would often double up in bed but as they matured they obviously needed their own space. I prefer trundles to double bunks, just my opinion. Good luck with your project.

Of the layouts you showed I think #1 makes practical sense for use. Having the refrigerator on the end allows everyone to access it without getting in the way of “the chef”. Having the microwave on the other side allows easy use for kids, too. I would not put the microwave above the stove. Really not functional for most users especially if you are actually cooking a meal. Keep a large table. It functions for meals, games, crafts on rainy days, dessert with coffee and long conversation….use a long bench along one side that you can slide under the table for space saving. Tables encourage family meals. ❤ What fun to consider the possibilities.

Loooong time viewer. Love your content and your heart for the Lord! What about modification of option 1? Only instead, use a thrifted, tall, armoire style cabinet to save money for closed pantry storage. That would balance your eye (tall bulky fridge in far right of “L” and then tall, heavy cabinet on left.)That cabinet could also be a lovely focal point for your eye with some character dead ahead when you walk in the cabin. It could be painted a color that you tie in with pillows or decor in living room- maybe a nice dusty, earthy blue or green? Then do the open shelving between for dishes and pretties. And the microwave could potentially be placed there as well depending on depth. Just a thought!

Hi Andrea! What a wonderful place to have grown up at and to now share with your family. The idea of investing in it for the long haul is a good idea! I liked all three options but I would really consider at least one if not two more uppers or one long one that gives you a pantry. You do have a large family, that will only grow as they get older and want to bring friends, then wives, etc. Not that you can't refresh it again later. I can't wait to see what you find to furnish it. Wish you lived near me and could come to my garage sale next week, have I got some finds you could use! This is an exciting project to watch unfold. Could you utilize the existing cabinets and reconfigure them? I can’t tell for sure but it looks like 3 separate cabinets. You could buy similar cabinets to complete the space and paint them all to match. New countertops would bring it all together. That would save you tons of money.
@PineandProspectHome Жыл бұрын
Yes, for sure! Unfortunately they're pretty old and tiny, but we can definitely look into that. Thank you for the helpful feedback!! 😀
@lauramitchell6725 Жыл бұрын
If you used the existing cabinets as the base of the island,they could be painted and not have to match the rest that you buy.Also,think about not getting rid of a table altogether as older people have a harder time getting up to perch on stools and besides,where would you do the puzzles?!😂😅🤣 sometimes you can find affordable drop leaf tables that have a long drop to the floor so that it makes a huge dining or work space when needed but can also just raise half (against the wall) and seat six.
@lisabraybrook5694 Жыл бұрын
What a great opportunity! Is the lake Crystal Lake? The kitchen island should have your sink and a dishwasher. Keep the stove on the wall that it is on and the fridge where it is. It's a fire hazard to have the stove enclosed. To balance out the kitchen, have a wall cabinet on the end of the other run of cabinets, next to the window. I know you are trying to save money, but if you buy the unfinished cabinets and paint them, you might save enough to do a more custom countertop. Those pre-fab countertops with the built in backsplash are limiting. The Hickory wood is expensive and has a lot of pattern that can make it seem busy in a tiny space, verses a painted cabinet. Another upgrade idea for you is to build an outdoor shower. Coming back from the beach will be a breeze if the kiddos are "sand free" before coming into the cabin. God bless your new endeavor, I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Can't wait to see what you and Mike come up with
@LaurieMo-vx1bm Жыл бұрын
What a fun and wonderful project! No matter what you end up doing, I"m sure it is going to end up being lovely. Since it's a cabin, I'm actually thinking the unfinished cabinets would work well and I think painting them a light but brighter color would suit a cabin well and bring a subtle color, without overwhelming or darkening the room. Having a few upper cabinets not only gives you storage, it also gives you visual interest as well and finishing things out with open wood shelving would certainly be appropriate for the space and the basic use of a cabin. I actually like the first layout the best with the fridge where it is, slightly moving the sink, moving the stove over on the other wall and mounting the microwave to the left of the stove. Since this is a cabin that will theoretically be used by more than one family, there will more than likely be more than one person in the kitchen at a time, so separating the microwave, the cooktop/oven, the sink and the fridge, is a good idea so one space doesn't block or interfere with another. Since you are thinking of something different than just the table and chairs, what about building a long seating bench with storage under the window and put a long, but more narrow plank style trestle table in front of it with chairs or a bench on the other side. Since it will be used by multiple generations, I personally would go for chairs on the opposite side from the built in storage bench to make it easier for the elders in the family that over time may develop issues that make it more difficult to sit on a backless bench. Something else that I immediately thought of was I loved the directors chairs you showed in the video, if you got something like that, you could have several set up to use in place of the sofa you want to remove and then turn them around and use them for the table whenever needed, so you'd free up floor and visual space, actually save space while also supporting the needs of the space and family. I also love the idea of a nice porch at some point. What a lucky and well loved little cabin. Enjoy the project and the process.

Hi Andrea! Well, you two are definitely up for the task as you both are so talented. I think keeping existing cabinets, maybe adding more shelves and additional built ins and painting it all vs. buying new cabinets is probably going to be cheaper in the long run. Having some shelving that can go up the wall may work too with some pretty baskets, etc. to hide items.I think an island would be great and would provide storage underneath. I can see a long table outside for larger family gatherings when you all want to sit and congregate. Poor Mike, he can never catch a break! LOL But he is so good at what he does, and a little bit of him probably loves the challenge! I would keep it as simple and inexpensive as possible. Things can always be added later. Just painting, creating a new layout, and making inexpensive book shelves to replace the ones that are there and surrounding the existing fireplace with them and mounting the tv would make a world of difference. I didn't notice the floors but sometimes just painting them for now and adding an inexpensive area rug may work for the short term.Such a fun project and one that can evolve over time.

We had a lake cottage too growing up in Michigan. Our cottage was layed out a bit different but instead of kitchen cabinets our kitchen had two large built in cupboards on both sides of the kitchen facing the dining room. so the actual kitchen was a galley kitchen no cabinets or shelfs just a countertop and sink on one side and the stove and frig on the other. My mom made curtains for under the countertop and my dad built shelves. But the built in cupboards that faced the dining room were built exactly the same they stood about four to five feet high and about two to three feet wide. They had two drawers on top two doors with shelves in the middle and one large drawer on the bottom the left cupboard we kept all our food and the right cupboard we kept all our dishes. It was perfect. I thought maybe something like that would work for your cottage.

Yes It definitely need some updates. After seeing what your husband can do I don’t see any problems and materializing anything you have in your minds. Above cabinet and L-shaped kitchen maybe even a U-shaped kitchen woodwork in there. Personally I’d put the woodstove back in but that freestanding electric thing does not look good the TV mount it would be nice Built in cabinets on both sides of that fireplace would also be a perfect place to store away all those movies games and puzzles. Also what I did before I finalized my plan and building my little cabin was get the dimensions on grid paper. And then there is I’m sure a website where you can print off the different measurements of the countertops cabinets furniture etc. and that way you can move it around on your grid sheet to find out what looks best

How wonderful you guys are doing this for your family. This must bring relief to your aunt that the cabin is being looked after given she is not nearby. 1) If you choose hickory a floor or counter match might be hard. If you paint or stain then floor and counter could be anything. 2) Not sure of space but do you have room for a peninsula? Move the fridge and put it there. You would have more counter space and storage. 3) a long harvest table with long banquette seating along wall under window might be good if multiple families gather 4) hutch on wall beside door table are for more storage or amoire as pantry 5) open shelving would be cost effective but for me would be clutterd and dusty so maybe limit to one wall 6) ikea harlanda sofa can be configured many ways if willing to spend 7) fireplace/tv idea good if not looking to replace wood stove. Looking forward to future videos.

I like the idea of unfinished cabinets that you paint a neutral shade, butcher block countertops, with an island made out of old doors that is open on the back for your trash can & recycling and maybe even a little room for a shelf also. For the flooring, I would personally remove the carpeting and paint the plywood or whatever is underneath, a shade of brown with an oversized faux boi ( fake wood ) look, or a large stencil design repeated throughout. I’d buy two somewhat matching vintage sideboards or buffets for either side of the rock wall with open shelving above and definitely find a way to make it into a real fireplace by saving money on all the other areas. I purchased used appliances off of marketplace for our cabin and all three cost us a total of $600! They’re all stainless and have worked great for us the last 4 years. Whichever wall is the largest should house the television; but do you really watch it on vacation? I’m sure whatever you & Mike come up with will be cozy and adorable! Looking forward to this sweet transformation! 🤍

A dark butcher block counter is really nice and easier to refinish when needed. (Hard to repair damaged or worn laminate.) How about a peninsula between kitchen and dining with a banquette in the dining corner? Add storage under benches. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!

How exciting! Thank you for sharing this adventure with us. So my input…Design-Your option #1. Cabinets-I agree with Trina. The Hickory cabinets are really busy. I’ve seen them up & I don’t think you would be happy with them. Counter Top-Love your choice (the marble look). Flooring-Just a reminder, the more textured the more sand/dirt can collect in the grooves. Last thought. Is it possible any other family members could donate to the project since it is shared? Mike always does an amazing job with whatever he puts his hands to and you have favor with finding the perfect pieces to pull it all together. Oh one more, I love, love the oars! Hanging inside & outside! WooHoo, Go Team!

The director chairs are easily recoved and could be hung on the wall and extra used for extra seating!:)

I really like the second option with leaving the fridge where it is and the microwave above the stove.

I’d go with the unfinished. Mainly because the hickory cabinets I’ve seen are so variable in the light vs dark areas in the graining and can sometimes be very busy looking. Knowing you typically don’t like “busy” I think you might be disappointed with the hickory cabinets once you got them, and you would have paid more.

@Pine and Prospect Home - Simple Decor Ideas .... I would have to agree wuth the previous comment regarding the hickory , it can be " busy " and depending on the surrounding areas, it can be too busy and distracting. What a fun project, ohhhh my , what a C u t e place , as far as the structure. A fireplace is a must in a Cabin. :) I would probably place the T V on one of the sides of the fireplace. Definitely taking out the one sofa will be helpful to creating a better footprint. :)

I would extend the kitchen all along that back wall and yes, an island with seating is the way to go. You definitely need a deck! You can almost double your living space! Great for dining too!

New adventures are fun and sometimes stressful. Moving the stove to the other side might cost more because of the electric lines it would be easier to move the fridge. All the layouts look amazing.

How fun!! I love projects like this!! I loved your first and second drawing. I am exactly the same way when it comes to projects, my mind goes to decorating it when my husband is demo-ing. He then has to reign me in. 😂 Great ideas!! Thank you for bringing us along. ❤
