Mother Cabrini is a historical part of our American story...she brought a significant number of people to a better quality of life. What a witness to the world as to how just one person can accomplish so much for others. A shining example of the power inherent in each of us...especially women, when properly motivated !

Thanks Tim. As a Catholic I appreciate your candid review. I like how you broke down the various aspects of the film and measured them on their own terms. As to the ‘faith’ aspect, there is this theological understanding among Catholics that St Francis once expressed. It goes more or less this way: Preach Christ always, with words if necessary…
@wbl56499 ай бұрын
" How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear, without a preacher?" Romans 10:14 Romans 10:17 - So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
@Deuterium2H9 ай бұрын
@@wbl5649 The wonderful (if possibly apocryphal) quote from St. Francis is not meant to be taken as an "Either/Or". Like many orthodox (i.e., Catholic) interpretations of the Deposit of Faith, handed down by Christ through Apostolic succession, the quote attributed to Saint Francis expresses a "Both/And" predication. Nevertheless, at least in this specific quote, the emphasis is on bearing witness to Christ through one's actions and behavior, and thereby being an example of Christian charity and sanctity. By bearing witness through example (Imitation of Christ), one can often change hearts and minds more effectively, as compared with overt preaching (and especially proselytizing). This is particularly the case for hearts that are already hardened to hearing the Kerygma. Something that is all too common in this materialistic, relativistic, secular world. Once someone is in "receive mode", then the catechesis on the Gospel can find fertile soil. With that said, it is a prudential judgement call as to how to best "preach" the Word of God. I am with St. Francis. It is a Both/And scenario, with the relative emphasis being tailored to the situation, and the individual(s) at hand.

Your movie review was AMAZING, loved it, thank you for sharing this review.I believe the man that saved her was her uncle. Historically it was said that her uncle was a devout Catholic who inspired Cabrini to become a religious sister. Being saved from drowning inspired her to live her life for God, felt called to be a missionary. As a young girl, she nearly drowned, resulting in a lifelong fear of water. Yet, she crossed the ocean 27 times, often at great peril, to continue doing God’s work. Even though she had this great fear of water, her passion to bring God to people and people to God is what overcame her actual fear of water.Cabrini had a grave fear of water and drowning, yet she bought a ticket to sail on the Titanic to bring her mission to the East. Right before she set sail, she was called back to help with a crisis at the Columbus Hospital in New York. The Titanic sank without her, and looking back, it was all a part of God’s plan to keep her work going.

Great review! I actually didn’t think the script wandered, but i do agree the ending was a bit abrupt. I am glad they added the montage and epilogue to help counteract that. I just saw it last night and it had a profound effect on me. I thought it was gorgeous. I actually think it was one of the best films I've ever seen. Not sure why it affected me so much. I went in with lowish expectations and came out inspired. I've been having a sort of low period in my own life as a writer and an artist, and this helped reignite my spark. I think seeing how faithful Cabrini was really spoke to me. I am grateful that the message was more oblique. In allowing it to be more oblique, I suspect Monteverde opens the film up to a wider, more secular audience. I don't think that's a bad thing.

She was a Catholic nun and everyone knows that all nuns pray. Women do not become nuns unless they have a deep faith and devotion to God. Prayer and love of God are implicit in the film. The film showed a nun doing God's work and doing it Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam!

Christiana Dell'Anna IS Mother Cabrini and in my opinion deserves an Oscar nomination. Also, there is one small fault I have with the film. There is one scene where Mother Cabrini suddenly places a veil on top of the bonnet she had been wearing. No one explains why the veil became necessary, I read in one of my many books about Mpther Cabrini that she was told by church patriarchy that the immigrants were used to seeing other orders of nuns that wore veils. So as not to confuse the orphans and other children under her care, she ordered a specific silk material which was imported from italy. The veil consisted of light and dark square designs.

As for the Faith aspect. How much of Sr Cabrini ‘s prayer life was exhibited in the film ? A Catholic Sister spends a tremendous amount of time each day in prayer. Included in that prayer life would have been daily Mass. Was any of this portrayed. ?

Good point. None that I recall. It's possible I may have missed a shot or two showing her praying in the house they renovate for an orphanage or at least during that part of the film. But I don't believe there were any scenes dedicated to showing her prayer life.

No. She never kneels for prayer, never does the sign of the cross, never says the name of Jesus, never takes the orphans to Mass, never see any sacraments only empty churches. She argues with the Pope and the bishops in a manner unbecoming of a religious. Other than that it was a good movie.

I think it’s disingenuous to continuously compare Cabrini to Sound of Freedom, simply because they shared the same producer and cinematographer. Each has a different cast,script, and a different purpose. Do we want the predictable churned-out productions that a Nancy Meyers romcom gives us time and time again or another Die Hard 6 for example? Sometimes we do but isn’t there room for stand-alone movies? In my view it speaks to the strength and versatility of a filmmaker to create something refreshingly new each time. The movie stands on its own without the overbearing mark of the director. I believe they also achieved the elevation of the human spirit without having to beat the viewing audience over the head with a bible. This gives the movie a broader appeal and is covert evangelization to people of all faiths. I say bravo to Cabrini!

I don't think anyone here is suggesting "beating people over the head with their Bibles." No, not at all. Sharing Christ or even giving Him thanks for His part in making Cabrini's achievements occur would have been a blessing and an added bonus to this story. I think the movie was very well made. I personally understand people's opinion about wanting more Jesus in the film (or her faith more) but at the same time I understand why. Here are some comments I have read that I agree with: 1. Although not completely Catholic this movie meets the world where it's at. While not being overly religious it has the Catholic faith at its core without being overly pushy. Anyone that's Catholic already knows how much more religious she was but this movie attracts everyone and anyone of many faiths & beliefs by not being too "religious". 2. As a Catholic raised in raised in an extremely devout home, I am already aware of the criticism about this not being that focused on Cabrini's personal Catholic faith journey. But I think it is critical that we take a step back & look at our culture overall right now, especially in America. We are in a state of more decay. Our children are growing up in increasingly narcissistic, perverse, & blasphemous society. We need to see God in acts of love & kindness. And restoring human dignity to the discarded is such a important aspect of our faith that we need ot pay attention when it is presented on a wide-reaching platform such as this film. This open dialogue that only affirms our faith, but also scan bring others to learn about what it means to be a Catholic Christian.

I think the film does not give us any idea of the Christian spiritual life of Cabrini or her nuns, the message of the Gospel and doing the work for the glory of God. It may be that they want to appeal to a wider audience. It shows a very male dominated society and Church, at the time, which is part of our history. This commentator, who gave a synopsis of the film, his subtle anti-Catholic bias came through very strongly. When he said there wasn’t enough about Jesus as Lord and savior in the film that it was a Catholic film you could see that he was really holding back on his bitterness towards Catholicism. He needed to open up the eyes of his soul because the entire film was about Christ about Christ with the poor Christ in the marginalized Christ in the atmosphere in working through people to bring hope and healing And salvation this was probably one of the most Christian films that has been shown in a long time. I get really sick and tired of evangelicals analyzing Catholicism. He have a clue what is about I mean his little digs were all through this analyzing of the movie. Mother Cabrini was a strong woman she was convicted with had a conviction of faith that motivated her, but this guy obviously was unable to learn anything from her. It was clear to me he is clueless.
@TimRistow9 ай бұрын
I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm not anti-Catholic and I have no bitterness toward Catholics. Nor was I critiquing the Catholic faith in this video. I was reviewing the film. My comment, specifically, was this: "From what I remember there’s not a clear cut message of ‘Christ is the way to Salvation’. IF it errs in anything, this may be it.” That's a commentary on the film and filmmakers, not Catholicism. I do think that by the way that Cabrini lived her life, as presented in this film, we see Christ through her actions. We see her live out faith, forgiveness and love. That is most certainly something we ALL can take a lesson from with one another. Thanks for watching and commenting. God bless!

It is said that she as a young girl would make paper boats with violets in them floating them in the river as if missionaries were sent out to change the world. She would eventually fall into the river herself drowning. Rescued, bedridden, with little hope of a long life, Frances never gave up that missionary spirit. She tried endlessly seeking a Religious Order of women to accept her into their communities. Finally, one Order accepts her as a teacher, not as a member. When the school was to close, a good bishop encouraged her to start her own Order, and so she did with other lay teachers of the school, and Frances X. Cabrini commenced the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her little boats with violet still float today.

I saw the "Shania Twain" trailer for the film. It seems the publicist for the film wants to sell the film as a you-go-feminist epic rather than a Traditional Catholic nun who drew her inspiration from the Ancient Latin Mass, the Traditional Sacraments, and pious practices that produced the best of what Roman Catholicism represents to its faithful. The shrieking noise of Shania Twain singing about a drunken girl's night out and trapsing about in a short skirt, hardly is conducive to a life story of a woman who wanted nothing more than the exhalation of Holy Mother Church and the Salvation of souls. I smell Hollywood propaganda.

Wow what a circumspect point of view. Indeed, I had forgotten what it's like to have no personal experience with Catholic spirituality. Clueless as a Primitive Baptist deacon from Kaintuck. (A personal retreat for a few days in a Trappist Monastery would change your life and relationship with Christ, pretty sure. There are 15 such monasteries across the US.) I'll go see the movie but thanks for lowering my expectations.

Growing up Catholic, this was pretty much the norm. I remember as a "member" of our local Catholic church, my parents were more than "encouraged" to "donate" to certain charities the Catholic church was involved in BUT nothing was mentioned about the salvation of souls into Christ's Kingdom, to live with Him for eternity. Personally, I found this in my current church for born again Christians.

@@shuffman8094 infant baptism does not guarantee that a God parent will stand up for the baptized infant to grow up with Christian values. Hence, I believe a person should become baptized when they are personally able to accept Christ into their life & what it means. Well goody for you. You must have been deaf dumb and blind about saving of souls and the exaltation of the the cross and Gods Saving grace. Did you ever “read “ the liturgy . Every line is biblical What about the readings Old Testament , letters, gospel.? all about salvation and Jesus saves. I actually dislike people shouting at me in church to shove a message down my throat. I’m sorry that that you didn’t understand the Bible lessons, verses , words that fill the mass. Oh and the collection thing and giving to charity.?I’d suggest you go to big tithing church where they want to see your portfolio and tell you how much YOU WILL GIVE. No if ,ands , or buts. I have heard about salvation throughout, we have actual feasts days that celebrate the dead who live in Christ. I don’t believe in Magic and “ cheap grace”. I don’t believe saying you’re “born again” makes you saved , just as much as a man saying he’s a woman, makes him one. How about Paul worrying about his salvation “ I in fear and trembling” total security , to me is only something an American church would come up with. Like an ad from an insurance company “ we do the work so you won’t have to”.

Do you think arts were a fluke? Or medicine or humor? These are all Gifts to be used to give the glory but also as a gift of humanity to humanity. @@bridgetmivsek2828 every year at Easter we have the opportunity to to reject or renew our baptismal vows. Is it impossible to reject baptismal vows made as an adult? That is a specious argument. Do we do the baptism exactly as the apostles did it.? Doubt it the Didache was the earliest document on the rites and rubrics of any sacrament. Baptism was first and foremost. There is nothing that forbids infant baptism. If something isn’t condemned in law , it means it’s lawful or a least not sinful. The Didache on Baptism basically says that hot, water cold water, living water or any other impediment is enough not to baptize. the most important thing in baptism is the baptism itself . You are marked forever as a child of God. That’s its importance and probably the reason infant baptism wasn’t condemned. You are marked by the father son and Holy Spirit as Theirs. The only importance is the baptism be Trinitarian . If it’s isn’t trinitarian, it is just a cleansing ceremony.

@elizabethhonaker48558 ай бұрын
I agree with your initial assessment. Cabrini’s faith seems to be in HERSELF! God is mentioned ONCE; the Lord Jesus Christ, not at all. One prayer of “grace” - no Eucharist (her great strength), Mass, etc. I did not see a rosary at her waist (a part of her habit). She was a feminist heroine who talked about “her” empire, not the Kingdom of God (at least, as the script revealed her). Disappointingly devoid of her focus on God!!

I would think that would be naturally assumed since she was a nun! I think they wanted to put across what she did for the immigrants rather than her faith in God which should be apparent!

Do not recommend it! 👎 This film about one Christian denomination from the eyes of another denomination (not sure it was Christian) is what the film was trying to uncover - the false labeling of a group by another group. Saint Cabrini would have implored the help of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Christians call this with excitement, "Humility", the total trust and reliance on God and not self. This film shows SAINT Cabrini only relying on self. Very UN-Christian. Very UN-Saintly. Unfortunately, very Hollywood = Political!

However, in this movie, I saw a woman laying her life down for others through her suffering physically and emotionally as she came up against so many obstacles from politics and her church. It's definitely a story about not ever giving up and to keep moving forward and knowing that, if you are acting in God's will, He will bless your efforts. I hope you stayed until the end and saw that chart about all the hospitals that were built all over the world to help others as a result of Cabrini's tireless efforts to serve the Lord.

Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini finds this “Angel” Studios film a mostly inaccurate disgrace. Saint Cabrini is the very first female Saint in the United States. She had (has) a WONDERFUL Pope connection at the Vatican unlike this film portrays. This film is an insult to Christianity that includes The Catholic Church and women-perfectly calculated to debut on “International Women’s Day” to increase ticket sales. Another movie of Saint Cabrini’s life will come. In the meantime, I rate “Angel” Studio’s version an F. BECAUSE Everyday is women’s day. Everyday is children’s day. Everyday is men’s day. Everyday is charity day. Everyday is Environment day. Everyday is animal day. Everyday is sealife day. Everyday is all life’s day. THAT is the message of Saint Francis Xavier Cabrini.

@sheilanewcombe10 ай бұрын
Luther broke away from the false teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and it's indulgences. Man is saved by God's grace alone through faith, not of works (sacraments). It is a gift of God so no man can boast. We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works that God ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10) We call no man Father on the earth except God who is in heaven.(Matthew 23:9) and only Jesus can forgive sins alone....not a man called the pope or the traditions made by man. There are more however, I can't list them here. RC church is a works based religion following a pope who thinks he's God and yet does not follow the words of God. Thank God Luther was sent to reveal this truth!

@@sheilanewcombe No, we Catholics don't believe we are saved by the merits of our own works, but by the works that, by God's grace, give us The Lord Jesus Christ's merits. For though you might have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers. Indeed, in Christ Jesus I became YOUR FATHER through the gospel".
