Hook: Barbless Tactical Czech Nymph Hook, sizes 14-16.
Thread: UTC 70 Denier or 8/0 or yellow olive.
Body: Australian-possum dubbing, light olive.
Thorax/Head: Australian-possum dubbing, dark brown.

Kenneth, can't reply directly to your comment (the linked comments from Google+ are driving me nuts). But, anyway split thread vs dubbing loop is really a matter of personal preference. For this application I like the split thread better because you have more flexibility with getting the dubbing noodle the correct length. With a loop, you're kinda locked in. I like using the dubbing loop for coarser materials, even deer hair. Two full strands of tying thread really let you crank the pressure on while twisting.

I have been a professional tattoo artist with a very steady hand for more than 12 years now and I honestly thought this might give me some kind of edge when it came to fly tying but my God this has been an eye opening and humbling experience trying to tie my own flies hahahaha one thing I found that was similiar with tattooing and fly tying is that it is often the simple ones that are the most onforgiving.

I love the patterns simplicity. I found that I had ran out of the second dubbing color. So I got to the switch point and pulled out the good old black sharpie and finished. It’s almost easier!

I'm assuming you use split shot when tying this on to your line? I often wonder if beads and lead wire are even necessary, and it would be enough to just tie nymphs without them and just use split shot to get them down.

Yes, I too love the split thread technique. I ran out of time making the video but wanted to say that you don't have to split the thread a second time for the head, just insert a clump of dark brown right after the last green clump (makes the tie much quicker). I'll let you know how the pattern works.

Just watched your Green Caddis Larva video too. In the other video you added weight to the fly. But non in this one. Do you think the fly will sink well enough without any added weight? Even the wire wraps would add a little weight. Love watching your videos. Very easy to follow. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Neil.

This fly, and its predecessor are meant to be fished behind a weighted fly or with weight added to the tippet in front of them. I don't add weight to the fly itself to keep it neutrally buoyant and moving around more naturally. Glad you like the videos, thanks for watching.

You can split any thread that can be flattened out. It takes a little more patience with really fine thread, but it can be done.

The best upside is it’s easier to take out of your ear or jacket lol. All joking aside, it’s a huge benefit of going barbless especially for beginners or kids.

centralmassanglers Oh, those two rows! They are a hare's ear, pheasant tail combo that I call a "Double Standard" and I have done a video on the pattern. Although those look a bit long they are actually size 18 and tied on a Dai-Riki 285. The ones you see in the box have no weight other than a wire rib. Fish them behind a weighted nymph or behind the dry in a dry dropper rig. I try to tuck a row or two in every fly box just to be sure I'm never without them. Nice pick up.

+Cole Wolfe Most likely, yes. The stocked rainbows I fish for were stocked as yearlings. This means by the time I want to catch them they have been eating bugs and minnows for a while, and will readily take such imitations. I know that in the U.S. its customary for trout to be stocked later in their lives and as far as I know are more apt to eat food that's similar to the food they received in the hatchery, in that case I assume you would be better off feeding them trout dough.

Try whatever you have that looks similar. Any curved or straight hook, just about any dubbing will do. Thread, you need to find something you can flatten out and split (Danville will work, Uni can be difficult).

Just starting my journey into fly tying and I bought the Veniard Premier box. What a waste of money. Crap thread choice that keeps breaking, bobbin too tight, either dark olive or bright red dubbing. Should have bought some nice hardware and then materials separately :(
