On "My Car Story" we're in Canada on 8-7-24.
We're looking at a 1976 Cadillac Mirage in Blue Paint. The car comes with the 500 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Steve Plunkett. Steve’s had this car since 2009. Steve shares he had heard of the “Mirage” which was a custom build car by Gene Winfield. Cadillac Coope DeVilles would be transformed into a Cadillac with a pickup bed. When he saw it, he thought that is different and would looks great in his collection.
ENJOY!

500 glorious cubic inches of Cadillac goodness & it's fuel injected, too. I've seen similar ones that I think they referred to as "Flower Cars" for funeral use, but this color combo and private ownership/use seems like the way to go. It was nice to see the fine young man who's normally been behind the scenes, too! Thanks, Lou!

Mirage! Speaking of Flower Cars! The Cadillac Mirage was never meant to be a “Flower Car” for 1975-1976! The Mirage was Cadillac’s idea of a sporty luxury pickup truck for the person who wanted a light duty pickup truck but didn’t want to drive a Chevrolet El Camino! So Gene Winfield was given the task of creating a Cadillac Pickup that doesn’t look like a “Flower Car” or an El Camino! The Cadillac Mirage was the answer! Some came with a extra door on the passenger side use to store golf clubs. One more thing that’s a 1st for Cadillac was in the pickup bed. There’s a lockable storage compartment. Honda Ridgeline claimed to be the first. Apparently they didn’t know about the Cadillac Mirage! But still such a unique Cadillac! Only about 204 were made. Rarely do the come up for sale! If you find one buy it!

Many of those 500 CID Cadillac engines are still in everyday use as engines for airboats in the Florida Everglades making tremendous noise without any exhaust systems on them as they have for the last forty five plus years making their way through the swamps bringing tourists on tours through the estuaries and sightseeing alligators and some of the most beautiful sights in the country. Bring your earplugs.

Your Welcome sadly you don’t see this here too much in the Chicagoland area like we use too it’s pretty much a northeast NewEngland tradition now just like when you go into the Parlor for visitation here in the midwest only half of casket is open or half couch up in the eastern region the casket is full open or full couch they like to say And in the Deep South they practice full couch most of the time but not always

I was an auto tech at a California Cadillac dealership in the mid-80's and remember a car like this coming in. These were built by more than one customizer. The one which came into our shop was badged a Cimarron, if I remember right. Caddy later had rebadged a Chevy Cavalier as a Cimarron. These conversions were marketed as funeral flower cars, which had clear plexi-glass extensions above the bed tops. As we were in a large farming community with mega farms and rich farmers, these cars caught on with them. They had their Caddy to drive to the Grange meeting and while on the farm could throw a shovel, bucket, irrigation pipes, etc. into the back and take them where they needed to go. I don't think that I ever saw one of these, except flower cars, which looked like they had ever had anything in the bed. I remember seeing the station wagon conversion Caddy's once in awhile. Most of the time they grafted on a full-sized Oldsmobile station wagon's back portion. They had the disappearing tailgate also.

That 1976 Cadillac Mirage Sport Wagon looked amazing with that soft blue paint in the sun glare! Extraordinary craftsmanship on the join of the vinyl roof, slightly curved, with those lines extending to the back of the bucket. When you did the full shot, you could see the length of the body, giving the appearance of seeing a large and elegant boat. The cabin is beautiful, in a similar tone to the exterior and some large and comfortable seats; apart from the nice wood details on the doors, instrument panel and the voluminous steering wheel. As always, I love the final drives watching the vehicle unfold those beautiful roads, and, in this case, with your son at your side accompanying them (who by the way, looks a bit like you, Lou, hehe). Give him my congratulations, for his excellent editing work. Greetings, and blessings, to both of you!

*_Lou, although they are late 1950s models several of these vintage "Cad Caminos" can be seen in The Godfather Movie during "Vito Corleone's" funeral. In some areas of the country they were simply known as Funeral Flower Carriers. Often while they were off duty they were used in local parades and Soap Box Derby Races to fetch the cars back up the hill._*

Terrific classic car! Cadillac made the first El Camino in 1954, but it was a sport coupe not a car to truck conversion. In 1959, Chevrolet made the first El Camino sport truck, based on the 1959 Impala. Pontiac also made one that year as a prototype concept vehicle, the El Catalina, and also made a 1960 model version. This Cadillac is unique! Just over 100 were built, all with electronic fuel injection.

I would love to have one. It’s beautiful! GM has a history of making great cars into hybrid “car/trucks” with the El Camino. Making an “El Camino like” vehicle out of a Cadillac would not be unheard of. While small, I believe there would have been a market for such a vehicle if sold by their national network of dealerships. I know that I would have bought one. Heck, if I could find and afford one now, I would buy it.

In 1957 the new Corvette took a giant stride forward with the introduction of the new Ramjet Fuel Injection. This was at the time, the most advanced performance feature ever offered on an American production engine OMG!

To many people look at these after market creations and think ," What a wonderful idea ". Most of these vehicles are poorly built, covered with chrome, vinyl, gaudy tasteless gee-gaws. This truck looks good, the many station wagons not so much. Some cars had an OEM warranty most didn't. Lou,at times your lack of knowledge shows in the comments you've made....RF
