2+3=5: Sometimes when you know your stuff, because of certain situation you begin to doubt yourself. 1+1=2&1+2=3&2+3=5. It gets tricky when you have a situation where you have 2.4+3.4=5or6. Sometimes your laws are known but sometimes you have an unknown. I am glad you were sure of yourself. A situation like that would make a lot of people doubt self. I am so glad you did not let the dealer throw you for a loop.

My friend gave me his 2003 CTS 3.2 L 5 speed manual transmission because he hated it. The guy that traded it to him, when my friend got into some police evading trouble and needed to off his own ride and which was a car that he had just paid 10,000 dollars for, had a body shop so he had my Cadillac looking nice but didn't know beans about mechanics so he hated it too since it had the limp mode problem. They thought it needed a new tranny. Lol. All I did was this procedure and the procedure where you wait 20 seconds wait and turn off and on the ignition without starting the ignition 3 times and boom! I have a bad ass sports luxury sedan! It has 150,000 miles on it. I'm never gonna stop driving it! It just needed the relearn procedure to the accelerator pedal positon sensor. The check engine light code P2138.

These CTS computers go bad all the time. I've changed around a hundred. They're so small and weak. Plus they are bolted right on the hot motor. I don't know why GM engineered these cars this way except to make people like you and me money. They're putting my kids thru college. All faulty CTS ECM's make the key get stuck. Also. If they were Class 2 error codes, I would have started scoping out the Class 2 data line first. Especially at the start of the engine. However, when I saw "key-stuck-in-the-ignition" problem I knew it was the ECM. Now this is an educational video. In that regard, I love how you took your time to explain to everyone in detail. That makes for a great learning video.

Top diag Eric.Never had alot of faith in reman ecm's. If any module arrived in a box that had been opened or had greasy finger marks on the box (done the rounds in the workshop) it went straight back to the dealer. Some can't be trusted to do the right thing.

Just at the moment I have a Cadillac with a customer no start. Several issues to sort out. But likely not computer at can-bus or single wire. I found your troubleshooting excellent and I learned from lessons included in post. Thank you for the instruction and the "heads up" as part delivery with prior install to electrical part. I find my customers love their GM features and patient repair with test and confirm...competence has them returning...as individual and then as gathering their friends. I find that listening to my customers as what they expect...and delivering that expectation is when....they are 100% satisfied. I find when I can briefly explain in simple terms...what the problem might be works well.....and further, coach those people to good maint schedule. They like the comfort and general reliable Gm models. M

Great Diagnosis! Short your long wires together, press zero on your meter if you have that feature or remember the residual resistance...Most electronic resistors are +/- 10% or more, so if it read about 110 to 130 ,I wouldn't sweat it, and on top of that test equipment also has tolerances that give a slight error...You're a good technician proving 3 bad ECMs...If anything, that shop now knows you are the "Tech to Call" when problems need to be solved!
@Cheepchipsable4 жыл бұрын
A lot of people don't understand there is a margin of error in instruments, though for an expensive scan tool 10% seems a bit much.
@stealthg35infiniti944 жыл бұрын
Most digital test equipment is very small less than 0.1 % plus/minus one least significant digit. The load resistors the car module on the other hand is probably 10%, maybe if critical 5%...

Had this exact same problem with my Mom & Dad 05 Cadillac SRX 3.6L. He ended up going with a remanufactured ECM from Flagship One. The first one was bad but the second was good. There is a small hole on the bottom of the steering column on the right side where a small screw driver can be put in there to release the key. This is a classic GM problem. Great video.

The CAN lines on GM are continuous thru the modules just like a traditional CAN network. They just go in on one set of pins and out on another, but interior to the module they are a direct connection if you check them with an ohm meter. CAN + in and CAN + out. Likewise on the negative. The weird ohm reading on the CAN network may have been because the CAN was powered up when you checked it.

@abrahamgarza42723 жыл бұрын
I suspect the resistance reading was off due to the circuit being energized. You should de-energize the circuit to get a resistance reading. If the circuit is enegized, you can compare the voltages on high and low. If the voltages are not balanced, it's an indication of a possible short, open, etc.
