In today's video we take a look at a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 5.3l V8 engine. The customer complaint is that the check engine light is on and the motor is running very rough. Using a scan tool we find multiple trouble codes for misfires, mass air flow sensor and oxygen sensors. We are also told that this truck had been involved in an accident and had a pretty major collision. Follow along as I take you step by step through the diagnostic procedure and see if we can fix this truck!

You were called in after 2 others couldn't fix the original problem. The owner replaced the original oxygen sensors with the wrong sensors adding to the misfires. Retired GM tech here. Retired in 2019 after about 40 years , most of it drivability and electrical. Been through this type of battle many times. I send my respect to this tech as this is so difficult under constant pressure of more than one problem at a time, keeping the customer happy, trying to stay ahead of the other vehicles to fix, and trying to be as good as Perry Mason on finding all the bad guys. Very tough job and mostly under appreciated. No wonder nobody wants to go through this type of work as a job anymore. Well done! :)

Dear Tec I got a 2007 Silvardo 4+4 Extended cab Z71 new bodystyle . 150kmilage...I put a new Rearend in it ..sat 2months ..Now I put it in Drive Drive Shaft Does nothing..But if I start manually in 1st ..then 2nd then Drive it'll Shift but seems to slip when I slow down ...Also replaced battery..something electric? Idk any advice would be much appreciated

@@jedidiahshilts7152 Could be codes in system relating to transfer case. Need scanned. Also hope gear ratios are matched. Last is Encoder motor or tranfer case but I would get it scanned before anything else

Eric, I don't know why you were apologizing for not videoing the entire process. What you did was terrific and really it identified what can happen when a person simply starts replacing parts without diagnosing the concern. You had two wiring issues and a self-inflicted wound by the customer. Three things wrong with this truck but your diagnostic process solved them and kudos to you. Loved every minute of this video.

True Fact: when running rough or idling bad fuel will enter the crank case and it will delute your motor oil so it is recommended to do and oil change. Also this applies to miss fires

You did a excellent job on this video. I am a shade tree mechanic (since the 60's) and try to keep up with automotive changes. You do a A+ job trouble shooting. One ting I have learned as a electrical technician for over 40 years. Is to do the tug test most of the time when working near connectors. Seeing that wiring harness, that would be the first thing before I even pierced the wires. Saved me a lot of time finding the problem(s)

Great video Eric! I hope they paid you well for your time. Sometimes customers are stingy when it comes to pay the last mechanic that undid the damage of the last mechanic and finally fixed the problem. I would have charged him well over ten hours. And I'm raising my rates cuz of inflation. Spread connectors, bad parts. And now the catalytic converter was burned and probably needs replacing. One thing is that the intake sensor is a different circuit than the MAF sensor. It was reading -40 and I don't know how the 12 volt feed to the MAF fixed it. Oh well. It's great that you didn't give up. I quit when a customer says that they don't want to spend more money fixing the vehicle.

The body shop that fixed that truck cut some corners. When Eric was showing us the wires near the fuse box, I couldn't help noticing that one bolt was missing on the upper shock mount.

GREAT JOB!! Deep dive videos like this are exactly what we all want to see. I have been struggling with my 2015 gmc sierra running rough and throwing codes. I have been diving deep into KZbin and the internet to diagnose my potential problems and throwing $$$$$$$ at parts for this $54,000 pile of junk. Most videos don’t give a full run down from start to finish, which causes me to spend more money and time on parts. This video helped me to understand a more complete picture of all the operations happening ALL AT ONCE, that are required to make my vehicle run smooth. And with a more complete understanding I am able to spend less money throwing parts at a problem and can make more informed discussions on my next step(s). Good job sticking with it and not just throwing parts at the problem. Most people would have just replaced the MAF sensor and that wouldn’t have fixed the problem. As soon as you said the fuel mapping was screwed up I thought O2 sensors though. It also shows how much other stuff can get messed up in an accident besides sheet metal.

Man dude major props for staying on it and zeroing in on the real problems. Installing the wrong sensors in the wrong place will drive a tech out on their minds. In the end intuition and experience broke this case wide open and brought forward the inevitable conclusions and righteous fix.

I saw on the live data that the ECT was reading -40F before fixing the MAF wire. After the repair that fixed the ECT reading as well. Nice job on the repairs. I know what you mean when you talk about working on vehicles when someone else has already tried to fix it. Sometimes it's just better if they were to leave it alone and untouched before it comes to you for repair.

Top notch skills, bro! I learned a lot of must do diagnostic procedure here. I had the same broken internally wire harness issue in the wife's GMC envoy tailgate. The feed for wiper motor was broken at the joint where it passes from door to roofline. I sat inside the back and brought door down to investigate, heard wiper go live, wiggled wires, and sure enough, lost power. Got it all fixed. I had can signal, good ground, but no power. Too easy.

You found the wire problem. Then you had to find the customer.......mistake. Fortunately the old parts were available. I've seen times when they weren't available, but I had another vehicle close by that I used as a one time swap tronics. Ya it worked. Anyway, GREAT VIDEO! I've seen "some" of that (on fleet vehicles) after an accident. It can be "very" frustrating! Keep up the Great Work!
