I just wanted to make a quick video on my thoughts about why so many GDI engines have problems with stretched timing chains. This particular Cadillac came in with a rough idle and a check engine light with DTC P0017. There is a TSB on this problem. Let me know your thoughts on this topic. I hope this video was useful.

Thanks for the video and giving a good explanation for the reason why these engine models are having stretched timing chains at such a low mileage. Cadillac should be honest about this one and issue a recall or a very steep discount on the repair. It's so prevalent that it's unconscienable

+carlbernngl I think GM should've issued a recall. Nissan issued a recall with the Juke for the same reason. All timing chains were replaced free of charge.

Although what you are saying is understood, for the lay person the timing chains don't stretch, they wear at the pivot joints and as a result elongate. Stretch is what they might do if enough force and strain was applied to them say if one was used to lift several tons. The wear has a lot to do with poor oil change frequency and perhaps a bad batch of parts (not uncommon). Keep in mind this engine DESIGN has been around since 2004 starting out as the 3.6L. The timing chain issues appear to have been most prominent starting around 2007 and up when GM implemented an oil change interval that could go as high as 5 figures in the Cadillac resulting in some cars running low on oil from owners not checking it for 10,000 plus miles, as well as the oil just being worn out in that time. I also recall that around the same time GM changed the chain design as well, from the traditional roller to the current quieter design. In order for your theory to be plausible, the wear pattern would have to match the description. If you suspect the high pressure pump as being the culprit, it would stand to reason that the chain that drives that pump would show the most wear. When I replaced my timing components at 176000 miles in my 08 CTS GDI as preventive maintenance with no timing codes, the chains appeared to show the same amount of wear compared to the new ones. It was considerable with a side by side comparison showing near a half inch difference in length. It appears the main culprit for timing chain wear is low quality oil and or extended oil change intervals. The LFX version of this engine uses the same timing components with the same configuration without as many timing problems and probably has improvements in the oiling system. I believe the higher compression ratio the GDI has, contributes far more stress on the chains than a single pump that uses a roller lift arrangement like the 24 valves which is very efficient. Opening two valves at a time against high cylinder pressures should exert a good load on the chains and contribute quite a bit to wear, especially with weak oil lubrication. I use 10W40 Mobil 1 full synthetic and 3000 mile oil changes.

quack quack hey great review! You know a lot about this problem, my uncle has a GMC Terrain 2010 V6 3.6L Poor maintenance I believe causes p0017 had low oil helped him with the oil change really dirty oil, only 5/6 quarts in there. Put 5w-30 Mobil synthetic at 135k miles, problem didn’t seem to be fixed. I was able to clean throttle and remove intake to see how the valves look. They look muddy and with so much residue he used Castrol oil and I believed burned oil stayed as residue.... I was wondering if you can help with a suggestion. I’m a good mechanic myself but don’t want my uncle to replace the timing belts. Was wondering if using degreaser or valve cleaner and doing a oil change as adding 10w-40 synthetic or thicker oil should do the trick....

The GM port fuel injection 3.6 had the same problem with timing chain "stretch." In my opinion, the timing chain routing is the problem. If they had geared the exhaust cam sprockets to the intake sprockets and just driven the intake cams with the chains, there'd be less tension on the chains as the cams are turning easing the stress on the chains.

hi i have a 2010 gmc terrain 3.0 awd slt with roughly 90k. i have code p0016 and p0017. both relate to the camshaft position sensor of bank of a and b sensor. first step was to replace sensors and code came back. im having it looked at monday but i bet the chain on bank one is stretched. probably do all chains as the other one is prone to go soon also. otherwise its a good car.

ronniejr1983 Acdelco sells the chains as a kit that also includes the tensioners for a fair price. Most times I run into these codes on the 3.0 engine it needs timing chains. I use a lab scope to check the sensors and if they look good it's time to replace the chains.

First Question! I called gm dealer to see how much they would charge for the timing chain service, and the service person said they don’t have the tool for it. He said to take it to Cadillac dealer, is that true? It makes me feel like no shop can do it. Second question?i had to tow my 2010 Cadillac SRX to tires plus, cause I couldn’t drive it, and got codes p017,p621,and p690, and they said possible timing chain jumped also! Did your Cadillac read the same codes? And did the timing belt jump!
