For those too young, this is when we had phone booths that required coins you put into the phone and used operators. Such a sad but beautiful song. Poor Jim died in a plane crash at the height of his popularity. RIP Mr. Croce.

It's incredible we have to explain such things as phone booths. Ah yes, I suppose that's the reward for growing old!

One of the most well-written and heart-wrenching pop songs ever. It's so ingrained in our American culture, it's hard to imagine that "Operator" didn't exist before Jim put it down.

Takes me back to my high school days. So sad that he died in September 1973 in an unfortunate plane crash. He was gaining momentum then suddenly it was over...

This song has its origins when Croce was in the army. There was a public phone near the base where he was stationed and Croce got the idea for the song when he overheard soldiers trying to call their girlfriends after they received Dear John letters...

In grade school in the seventies I would play his albums while laying on the couch with my eyes closed. Such a fantastic singer/storyteller. Such warm memories, thank you Jim.

I can't believe that in all the years I've been following you guys, you've never reacted to this great song! Jim Croce was a wonderful musician and storyteller! I can only imagine how much more great music we would've had to listen to had his life not been tragically cut short in a plane accident at the young age of 30.

"Jim Croce...I don't know...he was tuned, solid, into something that the rest of us just don't ever get to see." --Jerry Reed (musician and actor)

Living a lie and lying to oneself that you're okay when you're really not okay is the greatest dishonesty. The lyric in the song which stated, "something in my eye you know it happens every time" is suggesting that he tears up when he tries to call is ex-lover to tell that he's okay and have "overcome the blow" of losing his ex-lover to his best friend "Ray". To come to a place of acceptance and honesty is hard for most people. As you stated in your reaction, the benefit of professional counseling cannot be overstated or just to have trust person who can actively listen without judgment.

You would put a dime (10 cents) into a public phone and dial your number. If you didn't know the number you would dial O for operator. If the call was not made, the dime came back when you hung up. Since he didn't make the call, the dime would come back, whether he told her to keep it or not.

Wonderful choice and great reaction. Sadly, Jim Croce died in a small plan crash before his career really took off. You may enjoy songs like "Photographs and Memories" and Time in a Bottle". Both are beautiful songs. Thanks!

Not go get too far off topic, but... this song reminds me of the light science fiction horror film "The Vast of Night" (2019). No gore, not shocking, a tale of 1959 Americana. One night in a small town where a strange story unfolds. Main characters are a young evening radio DJ and a telephone switchboard operator. Fast talking, you might want to turn on closed captioning.
