I think the so-called authentic products cannot explain anything. The real authentic products are what you have in your heart. The bags bought on *regbags* have the same quality as the authentic products, and the prices are cheap and the after-sales service is guaranteed. When you start to become confident, you will care about these external authentic products.

I think the thing that truly bothers me the most is how disingenuous and truly disconnected from reality so many of these people are. The same people who will make posts on their Instagram saying things like "Support x cause for a better planet!" or "Bought from this small brand that supports battered women!" will turn around and get 25 reusable straws so they can have them in different colours, which defeats the purpose of having two or three, or instead of sourcing most of their accessories from small businesses or a business that supports a cause people can get behind, they'll do it once or twice for clout and the rest of the time they just default to working with whoever offers them the affiliate code with the highest percentage. And it makes me angry because we have this next generation of young impressionable kids coming up seeing all this chaos and trying to work out what to do, and who do they look at the most? Their peers and people on the internet who are influential in areas of interest to them. The phrase "Don't hate, educate" sounds very 70's hippie, but it's becoming more and more my go to for things like this because of how dishonest these people are with their audience and the consumer as a whole.

I do follow through!!! 🙋‍♀️ I grew up in chaos & dysfunction so now as an adult, organization has been a huge problem for me. I don’t want to repeat negative patterns for my own kids so seeing different ways to organize is cool and yes, relaxing. I know I don’t need the expensive storage containers but that doesn’t mean I can’t draw inspiration to organize in a similar fashion. Also, as someone who lives paycheck to paycheck (not an influencer), I too buy my soaps & other necessities in bulk when I get my tax return so they give me productive ideas to try out. Although, I think keeping bar soaps like that is just gross… I keep mine in their individual boxes on a shelf 😅 I guess I could see how this content could make someone compare their lives in a negative way but it has been a real positive for myself. I know you weren’t attacking viewers of these shorts, but I just wanted to show the pro’s of the restock/cleaning vids as well.

On the Dove Soap video. So, it might not be an undercover ad. I spend time in group chats with other creators, and it is common to make videos and tag the brand in question in the hopes of getting an ad or partner deal. Dove is a brand that has partnerships, but they also are selective, so you have to prove to them you can sell their brand before they reach out to you. Some brands also do posting campaigns that aren't technically ads, so they don't need the same disclosure. Olipop is a brand that does that. They allow creators to buy their own Olipop, make a video, tag them, and then send them the video and ask for royalty payments based on views. Since it is postpaid, it counts as Olipop buying UGC content and doesn't require disclosure as it wasn't technically an ad or partnership. (And I say that as someone working in business law as a legal editor.) Additionally, a lot of creators will pick popular brands and tag them as wanting to get a partnership, but also to sell affiliate products in their Amazon storefronts. And with Amazon, because the storefront says the creator makes a commission, the FTC does allow you to make content doing Amazon affiliation without disclosure on your video because the link itself offers disclosure.

I have to admit that I fall victim to restock videos almost nightly; before I go to bed, I scroll through those videos and literal hours will pass before I'm pulled from the trace. I fully understand how detrimental it can be, so I've found other ways to balance it out. But I do find them comforting and relaxing. I've also found a lot of great organizational "tips" that I hadn't thought to utilize in my own home with my own family. There have been a few adjustments made to kitchen storage and toy storage in my home that have come from videos like this. I've also found random snack ideas that I can give to my kids for their lunches or during the summer. 😆But I also completely understand the overconsumption and the trendiness that comes with these videos, so I try not to let them get to me on a personal level - the "i'm not doing enough as a mother and housewife" kind of level.

To tie in to your point about the satisfaction of watching this vira content, I think it's very similar to how mukbangs have a satiating effect for viewers who don't want to consume the quantities of food that the creator does, but they find a kind of "consumption by proxy" in these videos. I think the same is true for restocking and those viewers wanting that shopping fix without the guilt, burden and waste that comes with over-consuming, but in turn are fuelling the machine just by giving it their clicks in an attention economy.

Excellent insights about this topic. I have so much stuff and clutter, plus I work full-time from home, so that creates more clutter. On the one hand, I would love to be so neat and organized. I know where to get all the plastic boxes at a good price and I could take a few days to use them to organize, but at the end of the day, those plastic boxes are not the solution. In the past I actually hired a carpenter to make a lot of custom shelves, bookcases, an armoire, etc., specifically to house all my craft supplies, sewing supplies, books, media, etc. I hung curtains over the fronts to hide the contents. It all looks nice and it was probably one of the smartest things to do in terms of organizing and hiding all my shit. But, the irony is that since then I can no longer see these items, unless I pull back the curtains, so I no longer use them! It just may be that our lives are meant to be a little cluttered with stuff, if we are actually using that stuff. I did recently put all my tea bags in a special tea organizer box, and that saved space instead of having 10 boxes of tea. But at the end of the day, I think a messy,, lived in home with things that you actually freely use to enjoy an active, creative life is healthy too. I guess a happy medium between clutter and organization is optimal.

For me I like watching organization or restock videos on KZbin (not short form) because it motivates me to get up and tidy or organize my house. I had ADHD and doing that is a form of body doubling which is helpful. I never compare my stuff to these people or let my self fall into buying the things they show. I think people need to know themselves & their mental health and be careful when consuming this type of thing because it can lead to overconsumption, shopping addiction and depression if you are in the right headspace.

If I went to somebody's house and their fridge looked like that I would think they were a psychopath and/or somebody with way too much time on their hands. Living in the US I can say I don't know anybody that keeps that amount of candy/lollies in their house. I don't keep any in mine because if it's there I'll eat it. I don't know many kids that would have that kind of self control. Who has room in their freezer for all those ice cubes? I do wonder how far the OCD about restocking goes. Once somebody eats a single item do they feel the need to fill the space that's been left? If so, that would be stressful constantly checking.

Personally, I only watch short-form content through youtube videos, like yours. I won't allow myself to be on insta or tiktok while I'm in university. But youtube has been helpful because it has been stretching out my attention span for lectures! Because you also encourage people to respond with our own thoughts and insights, this has helped me with thinking about a topic more deeply. Essentially, I want to let you know your content is pretty great and I respect it a lot! :))

I HATE cleaning sometimes, and watching restocking/weekly house reset videos when I’m overwhelmed helps me to get stuff done- I’ve got my dopamine from seeing nicely cleaned house and have the energy to clean my own home. For me it’s some sort of body-dubling that gets my adhd somewhat satisfied and gets me up to do some chores.

Actually this was true in my house. We bought Costco sized boxes of chip bags and candy, so unhealthy foods were always available growing up. The fact that they were there meant that we didn't eat them very much because there was never a scarcity mindset with junk foods and we didn't feel like treats would be taken away. Now as an adult, neither myself nor my siblings have any sort of addiction to junk foods

The lady with the kids and the candy is actually correct, what she is talking about is called “habituation”. With food, if you are exposed to it on a regular basis, it becomes boring for kids. I worked as an eating disorder clinician for years and we use this as teaching for parents, but she needs to set a better example with her shopping!!

Right now I live with family members and their stuff is all over the place and they don't care if the house is messy and always leaving stuff out of there "homes". It drives me NUTS!!! I have known other people that have been in my situation that I am in right now and once they moved and had their own space - clean organized home. I want that again. Please!!!!! I am also getting tons of ideas of what to do and some NOT to do! Ps.... I have never seen someone put ranch seasoning on carrots. That's new to me.

I fell prey to the restocking trend a few years back, and it is just so inconvenient and unrealistic. Usually you have extra product leftover that you can’t fit in the pretty little canister, for instance, and then you just have to store the bag elsewhere anyway! Loved this video. Clicked for the tea, stayed for the life lessons and much needed tough love. ❤

I have found myself watching restock videos, but I have so many questions lol. certainly, no one eats all of this junk?? like the ones that have these extravagant hot chocolate rituals or crazy coffees - I usually want my dang drink and not the ritual or dishes that come with it 😂 is it because people like watching it, and do they write off all of the expenses since it's for a video?? I must know! they inspire me to declutter 😂

For a time I consumed a lot of these types of videos, they're satisfying, I loved the organization, but I learned more about sustainability/environmentalism/consumerism and now I see stuff like that, and ask why they need so much, especially the makeup when most of it would "go bad" before it got used. But I think a lot of those vids do come from people that can afford that and also need it bc they actually do use it; as that one lady said in her video, she had a groundskeeper and housekeeper, on top of her own family and friends to feed. And as far as the soap, I actually buy soap in bulk so I don't have to worry about such a necessity for months at a time.

I always wonder what they do with the extra products go that don’t fit into the cute little containers. Do they have a 2nd refrigerator for the leftover milk that didn’t fit into the cute container? What about the jar full of soap? Do they all fit? Do they have an overfill spot for the 2 boxes of soap that didn’t fit in the jar? I would be more interested in seeing how they organize the over-fill stuff. That space probably needs organization.

I would argue these restock videos are done from a scarcity mindset because there's no way you need to buy 20 soaps at a time, have enough ice cubes to cater for 1,000 or enough snacks for the next 18 months. Buying so much at once isn't about convenience, it's about fear of running out.
