I'm tired of the declining quality overall! Luxury and non-luxury, even my Nike lifting shoes or Asics running shoes aren't the same as before. I've started looking more into the vintage market and finding smaller quality brands (locally where possible) but it's challenging to find real high quality stuff. I don't feel like paying 1500 euros for a pair of poor quality heels, the label was never that important. I miss the days when those shoes actually had a proper last and quality leather. I've started learning how to sew so I can create my own high quality clothes and design my wardrobe the exact way I want it, ethically.

I'm probably one of your older viewers. I used to love LV in my twenties and most of my friends aspired to have one -- one not twenty. The scarcity and uncommonness of lots of people having them is part of what made them special and 'fancy'. I feel like influencer culture has made the 'special' common and less attractive IMO. The Neverfull didn't exist back then and the Speedy was the one everybody wanted. Now that I'm older I can honestly say I wish I had just put that money in a long term savings account or retirement savings. I have a couple of LV bags in my closet that I don't use and was actually thinking of reselling. My lifestyle is also different these days. I used to be a big city girl and that is not my life these days. It's much more casual and fancy bags just don't fit my lifestyle. If I were to spend that kind of money on a bag these days I'd would much rather pay an individual artisan for something unique and mine and be supporting somebody individual and talented than supporting slave labor. I do have a couple of smaller pieces like a change purse and key ring that I've had for over twenty years that I use every day and are still in great condition. It sounds like they don't make that kind of quality anymore. That's another issue. I absolutely understand the draw and attraction. I feel like for most (not all) people that as you age it becomes less important. I'm also not really exposed to influencer culture as I don't have any social media. I would probably be more turned off by what you've shown with all the influencer gifting than inspired to buy. How cool are they if they're giving away hundreds of them for free? Not so much IMO. I'm definitely not the clothes horse or fashionista I aspired to be when younger so take my two cents with a grain of salt.

Rich businessmen run huge conglomerates making billions by selling more and more to people under the guise of “luxury”. At some time in the past most of these brands wanted to make the best and sold in relatively small numbers. Arguably this was the correct size for the companies to make quality goods. Once the demand expanded, quality fell and prices went up. It’s impossible to keep quality in these quantities
@kaunas8812 күн бұрын
Only a small fraction of the high prices actually goes towards making these expensive goods. The vast majority goes towards marketing/advertising, fancy stores, and management/profits. People are buying the logo-not the actual product. The logo is where the money goes; the actual product gets the crumbs of the budget.

However, if/when it disintegrates or falls apart beyond repair, I still don’t know whether I’d shell out the $ for another from the same brand to replace it even if I could afford it at that time 😅 I’m also pretty gentle with my possessions in general so I’m hoping to make it last for many more years, so hopefully won’t have to worry about that for a while lol.

Also, you are right about this never going away. I’m old and was having this whole debate at the lunch table in school in 90s, another big era for visible branding, about what one is actually buying when someone, as a middle class or working class person (that what I am and who I grew up with), buys that Gucci belt or lower tier “luxury” hand bag, and how those brands market what is essentially merch or souvenirs to that class of people who can’t afford to truly engage with the brand.
@Zaragil13 күн бұрын
"Souvenirs" is a good word. I'm thinking that middle class people will buy a bag with a visible logo (50-100 euro to make), a perfume (6 euro to make) or maybe a 500-euro bracelet with a recognizable logo, made of leather and plated brass for a few euros. This is probably the biggest profit for many brands. Most brands have clothing items without a logo and similar to each other (sweaters, jackets, trousers, coats, even bomber jackets) which aren't really recognizable. I guess only very wealthy people buy those clothes, when they leave 50000 euro in one shopping spree without even looking at the things carefully.
@HunnyBee-w7r13 күн бұрын
Yup, middle class people and their souvenirs is the bread and butter, or at least a huge part, for these companies. It was true when I was in HS and since then they have doubled down on this strategy. Every generation has to learn it seems.

Here in Brazil we don’t even care about being ashamed of wearing a fake bag, if one costs a thousand dollars, here it would be something more than R$10.000 including taxes, and that’s what the most of us work for months to get (if saving 100%). Because of the crime rate even wearing a fake bag could be dangerous since someone could think you have money and something bad could happen. Only the top 1% afford this lifestyle

It's not necessarily dying but changing. People who can afford are simply not overindulging anymore especially on the handbags. Many luxury brands like Chanel and LV, I think, will realize soon that increasing their prices in attempt to create exclusivity is not correlated with an increase in desirability especially with poor quality products compared to their own past products. Hermes remains unaffected because they were already being exclusive to begin with along with being able to keep quality high. Miu Miu is doing well because it's trendy right now.

I'll stick with brands like J.Crew, Banana Republic, Urban Revivo, Quince, & Other Stories, LilySilk, and Goelia. Trends change so quickly, and the quality just isn't what it used to be-it’s no longer worth the investment to go Luxury anymore.

Great collection! I bought my first LV when I was 25 and I've only used that bag a few times haha. Also, I love your clutch! I have an Eva clutch with the DE print and I love the little chain. But I don't want to spend that much money right now and the kislux always gets me the bag I want and it's just as good as the LV and one of my favorites. Durability

I loved your perspective on this topic and wanted to add some thoughts from my experience in corporate advertising (where I work with an LVMH beauty brand) and as a content creator in the fashion industry with a passion for luxury. I think we're witnessing a shift in what "luxury" means today. Large luxury companies now rely heavily on selling more accessible items that promise "the dream" of luxury-think of LV's Neverfull bag campaigns or the boom in luxury brand fragrances. These products allow a broader audience to buy into the luxury lifestyle, even if they’re not part of the traditional luxury class. This approach is how these brands have grown, but it’s also changed the industry. The book Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster discusses how, as luxury brands began prioritizing accessibility, luxury shifted from being an exclusive club for the unaffected wealthy to something influenced by economic trends. This led to a focus on profit over quality, and now, with economic challenges affecting the masses, the industry faces new issues like sales decline which we saw in Q3 2024 reports. Thanks again for sharing-your analysis was excellent, and I hope this adds some context to the conversation!

As someone who doesn’t participate in luxury brands, I wouldn’t be able to say. It is interesting though, the people who relish in it and those who once did and left. Luxury to me is Loungefly and Sanrio 😂 Along with the small businesses I purchase from, because they aren’t cheap for a lower middle class girly like me

It only feels like that because of social media lol where do you see every other woman walking down the street with a Chanel or Hermes handbag 👜 People in the phone are not the same as people touching the grass! I live in NYC and in one of the most expensive neighborhoods and I don’t even see that!
@jesserivera181413 күн бұрын
It's definitely not dying but as someone who buys luxury a lot (I spend an obscene amount every year lol) I have noticed myself and my friends who buy luxury start to consider mid tier luxury brands who offer quality materials at a fraction of the price. People who genuinely love luxury goods not because of the label or prestige but because of house history, craftsmanship etc will always buy luxury. The people who have bought into it cause it's some trend or they want to be perceived a certain way are probably bored and on the hunt for the next "it" thing lol. My two cents worth! Great vid and topic! :)

It's not only luxury brands that are going lower quality. Lower end brands as well. Like Doc Martens... the boots I used to buy until 20 years ago were reasonable in price and they were boots that were going to last you pretty much your whole life. Now the price has gone up a lot, and that would be ok if the quality was the same, but no. The quality is more like a 30 euro boot instead of the 200+ euros they cost now. The clothes I buy too, they aren't expensive but not as cheap as shops like Shein. They used to be good enough quality to last me for years and years but now they make the tshirst a lot thinner and I don't know how many I had to throw away because I pick up one of my cats and their nails make a whole in my tshirt. Until 2-3 years ago that never happened.

Yes but the act of watching people trash the luxury brands means they care 😜 no one makes you buy anything, buy what you. If you love fast fashion bags, buy that, if you want artisan bags, do that. Why are people bothered what other people are buying, you don’t share a bank account 🤪their choice.

Fascinating stuff! Commenting from the USA, there seems to be a cultural shift that luxury clothes and bags with big logos and flashy accents that scream "The Brand" are now perceived as gauche. Trying too hard. A sign that someone is actually NOT fashionable or sophisticated in their style.

I don’t buy “luxury” items. I prefer to search for quality, made in my own country if possible (USA), the more local the better types of items. For example, my son is in the Army and so I buy the brand R. Riveter because the bags are good quality and made by military wives. I don’t understand the obsession with luxury because I just could not pay those prices for a bag. I’d rather pay maybe $200 and then have the rest of the cash for like a trip or some kind of experience. But nothing wrong if others want to spend their money on it.

The airline lost my luggage on a 7 days European cruise. Literally, I needed clothes and shoes was willing to buy a wardrobe at the first stop. Hermes S/As and etc were too busy to help. So I bought at the local French farmer’s market instead - much better decision. Didn’t have to beg S/As to sell me stuff. Ridiculous.

@@DemureDarlings ok, i have a right to go to free govermental dental clinic where i can have my teeth done ok or horrible, and then i should go to commercial clinic to have it fix and pay sometimes almost my whole salary. i dont care about luxury brands i never could afford them and even if i could i would not - i just dont like them. but have my teeth done or going to a cure place is almost unfordable. the prices are too high if you dont have it paid by government (you are actually have a direction from a doctor and if there are places) but people from neighbouring country can afford it in my country because their salaries are higher. the cost is equal to brand bags or more for example but most of the people in the country cant afford it unless they have a bank credit or will sum up for a couple of years. yeah, curation is not too much nessesary but it can be good. and comercial clinics are also not neccesary but mostly they have more experienced staff and better materials and can save your teeth before plaging them out.

My understanding is that in the 1990s "luxury" brands turned to "emerging" markets like China, Russia and Middle East. Arguably the brands gor flashier and perhaps lower quality in the process. Now that there are financial problems in those regions their market is shrinking. I was around in the 1990s when black market dupes took off and NYC was full of fake bags. After that whenever I saw a logo bag i assumed it was fake
@kaunas8812 күн бұрын
It is not luxury; it is overpriced. I see little of the quality that would warrant the term actual luxury. Instead, I see snobbery, lots of marketing and fancy shops. But the actual products are so often little more than mediocre, even sub mediocre. Even Hermes, which actually does offer quality products, is no better than many handmade purses costing less than $200.

Buying dupes to get the same flex for less - wonderful, fully support. But buying fakes supports shady businesses who do even worse than all of the fast fashion aspects of fashion nowadays, and I'm not a fan of anyone who - without mentioning these downsides - promotes buying fakes 🤨

It’s not “luxury”, it’s a logo. All of which are now owned by one big company, which flogs stock price uber alles. The stuff is a fairly good knock off you overpay for from the company instead of some alley in NYC. My mom has eighties Chanel. The bags online look fake compared to them.
