Just to point out... The math at the beginning is not correct. 15X.9 is 13.5 not 1.35 as you state. 15X.09 is 1.35. Luckily though 15-1.35 is 13.65 so the answers are pretty close either way. But this might not be the case for every vessel.

Wax is LESS dense weight/volume or, technically p=m/V p(density)- m (MASS, not weight, actually) divided by Volume. So less weight (or mass) in the same volume is lower density. Paraffin is about 0.93gm/ml. Beeswax is nearer to water at around 0.96 (give or take a bit because it varies a lot); standard soy is indeed 0.9g/ml. Blended waxes obviously have a variety of densities, but 0.9 is close enough. This method eliminates having to deal with the coefficient of expansion.... But that's another story.

I think “Desired liquid weight” x 0.9 (varies in certain types of wax in this case 0.9 maybe for soy wax) = “Dry wax weight” (that you need to melt) **But** in order to add fragrance oil and still make the liquid weight stay the same you have to do second calculation which is Eg. if you want 15oz of liquid to pour into the jar the formula to find the dry soy wax weight is 15oz x 0.9 = 13.50oz but to add oil into that and still wanna make it remains 13.50oz the calculation for 10% of oil is 13.50/1.10 = 12.27 (dry wax to be melted) and then total weight which is 13.50-12.27 = 1.23oz (of fragrance oil) 1.10 is for 10% of oil 1.09 is for 9% 1.08 is for 8% I hope this help 🙂

good information but I do not guess the correct levels very well. Sometimes I end up too low or sometimes I end up too high. Therefore, I use the water method filling the water to the very top and multiply by .80 (I've seen some people do 0.77). This is how I calculate the Dollar Tree 3x3 square jar: 14 oz of water x 0.8 = 11.2 oz of wax. x .10 = 1.12 oz of FO + 11.2 oz of wax = 12.32 oz of wax and FO filling my 14 oz jar.

I may be wrong but couldn't you also do the formula of the amount of candles x the amount of oz candles your doing divided by 20. Example doing 2 ( 8 oz candles) = 16 oz ÷ 20 = .8 of a lb which is about 12.8 oz of wax for 2 candles then if want to do 10% fo do 12.8×10% . I'm more asking to make sure this is an ok formula practice .. thank you :)

this is still a bit confusing too me. I am trying to figure out for a 3OZ fill jar where the water is 85g/2.99oz. Can someone help please?Thanks!
@justineballantyne61644 жыл бұрын
so from what i understand, it will be 85g x .9 = 76.5g solid wax required but that would be if you were solely using wax only. if you are trying to incorporate FO (say 10% FL) - divide 76.5 by 110% (FL +100%) = 69.5. So 76.5 - 69.5 = 7g FO. So you would need 69.5g solid wax & 7g FO to fill the container to the 76.5g

ok...This may be dumb, I working with your calculations, I came out with needing 10.7 ounces of unmelted wax and 1.1 ounces of fragrance oil (10% load) to equal 11.8 ounces to fill your 13.1-ounce example. So I'm not sure how to post pictures in the youtube comments but I made 6 candles from 6 old candles jars I had. This method above coupled with your other video filled the jars to the exact height I needed. Most of the candles look great but one or two of them have these like chalky white spots on the outside? @raymondwalker50724 жыл бұрын
Yes, works for grams. I've calculated this same way for years but always used .89 not .9 but would not make much difference. I also tend to round up a little with the calculated weights as it is quite spot on and if you put a little too much in one candle it means you have less for the next because you have only the exact amount of wax - so give yourself a little more to play with - that's what i do anyway. Hope it helps.

so can i just confirm pls as the numbers and what you say sometimes dont match. lol its all good - it happens, but i just want to make sure i have this correct: Fill glass with water to the level you want it & weigh the water amount (answer A). (answer A) x .9 gives you the solid wax weight (answer B). If incorporating FO, you need to display the FL as a decimal then add 1.0. eg 10% FL = 1.10, 8% FL = 1.08, 6%Fl = 1.06 So divide (answer B) by the FL as a decimal form (1.0 + FL) to give you the total wax required excl FO (answer C) Then (answer B) minus (answer C) = FO amount required. Therefore as an eg, we will say our water weight is 300g and we are using 10% FL i would do the following: 300g x .9 = 270g (solid wax weight) 270 divide by 1.10 = 245.5g 270-245.5 = 24.5g So i would need 245.5g solid wax and 24.5g FO to fill my 300g jar to the fill line i require

At the beginning where you talk about the wax vs water on the chalk board, you state that wax is .09 but wrote .9 and water is 1. This kind of confused me. Then in the first formula, you used .09 to get the 1.35 oz. I see the formula works for figuring out the amount of wax needed for the 16oz jar and then you continued with the 10% FO (I got this also). But, then you used .9 when calculating how much wax to use for a given oz of water. Why .09 in the first example and then .9 for the last example? Where did the .9 come from if wax is .09 to 1 of water? Do you use .09 when you know the amount of wax (without FO) and use .9 when you know how much water is in the vessel and want to know the amount of wax? Sorry, just a beginner here. So, there are about 2 different steps that you might need to go through to figure things out?

At the beginning you say that 16oz was is actually 10fl oz in a measuring cup. Obviously 20fl oz of water is 20oz. So surely the math should be 0.8 not 0.9? If water equals 20 then wax equals 16 is what you said at the beginning, divide that down and if water equals 1 then wax equals 0.8????
