Draiman honored the song, by singing it in the spirit in which it was written, adding a modern twist, by making it darker, colder, and more haunting. He made the song new, without disrespecting its original, which is pretty hard to do. Ordinarily, I detest covers, period. There are only three that I like. This one, Guns N Roses epic cover of Live and Let Die, and Julian Lennon’s cover of Imagine. After seeing this performance a few times, I’m going to look for more covers by this singer. Not only is he a fantastic singer, you have kind of pushed him up to genius level in his choices of vocals. Not to mention the the arrangement and the band. I have watched about a thousand reaction videos but those with musical training understand exactly what David does and just continues to astound. Most reactions, while appreciating his voice, also get lost in the song and the emotional reactions are great too. This song touches some people so deeply and personally, it’s that powerful. Although the song is half a century old and the original was in folk pop style, David’s vocals and intensity while performing brought it to a whole new level. It’s a perfect fit and perhaps the best cover song of this century.

I’ve been listening to this version of the Song of Silence since he first performed it on Conan. I always end up crying like baby. Somehow I feel this performance was a sacred “offering”, if you will, to humanity. Paul Simon’s prophetic words, expressed with such powerful and pure conviction by David, is the ultimate musical experience. It touches our hearts and moves our souls to share their love for humanity, their fears, their pain, and ultimately, that faint glimmer of hope. It is my favorite piece of music of all time.
@jeffstevens42623 жыл бұрын
The initial reaction people get (the goosebumps and hairs rising on the arms and back of the neck) I reckon are pretty much the same for everyone hearing this version of the song for the first time and this wonderful arrangement, production, and rendition. Much has been said about David Draiman's extraordinary vocal talents, but rarely do we hear about where he got them from. Fact is, he comes from an orthodox Jewish family and trained as a young man to become a cantor within the Jewish religion, but chose to break with tradition and follow a different musical path, which didn't go down too well with some of the elder members of his family (as you'd imagine), but they did all make up in the end when they saw what sort of impact he made in the world of heavy metal and how happy he was. The official video of this song has (last time I checked) attracted over 600 MILLION views and even Paul Simon, who wrote the song back in the early '60's loves it too, so that's the ultimate validation for all concerned.

What a wonderful performance! I've never listened to David Draiman before. Will definitely be looking for more songs from him. Love the way you explained his techniques. I completely agree that how good the voice is isn't the most important part of singing any song. It has to be all about promoting the lyrics. If not, what's the point of singing? Some of the most popular singers have less than perfect voices, but they understand the nuances of the lyrics and combine vocal techniques with emotions to make you listen to the words and build that emotional connection we're all looking for in the music and the performance.

The song was originally written about the struggle it took to get a record deal. None of the labels wanted the type of high quality music they were producing, just the dime a dozen albums from the cookie cutter groups. They were saying the content was too controversial and "beatnik" for what they were looking for. S&G didn't want to be just another group making gold records.

“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence?It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy.One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history.The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life." 8You and 7 others 5 Comments 1 Share Love Comment Share

Disturbed rocks. Incredible cover tune. By far, better than the original. I been watching all the reaction videos and this guy has the best reaction video. Really well done. You described what you were hearing in black and white so even I could understand the talent in David's voice

Hi there! Great reaction! I agree with the Phantom vibes! I would LOVE to hear him take on the Phantom role. I think that would absolutely kill.

When you consider he was sick when he performed this.....shows you how much if a professional he is...

I love watching reaction videos to this song. They're all impressed in the beginning and absolutely stunned with wide eyes when he goes full david draiman.

And they say he was sick that night. I've listened to all these critiques, and versions and the Conen performance was hands down the best ever.

Apparently Paul Simon saw this and contacted Disturbed to congratulate them. He also put a link on his own home page to this cover, the only cover he has ever done that for.

Yup. He caught it on CONAN. He called Draiman to compliment him on this cover. Great endorsement!

There’s a whole Reddit page with people claiming it’s riddled with auto tune, I hear what parts they are pointing out. But I truly believe it’s the deep frequency of his voice that stutters like auto tune. I’m not a professional, but I’ve only seen like 2 professionals on KZbin notice “possible” auto tune. 🤷🏼♂️ idk

Disturbed is the second in the 'sound of silence' trilogy with Pentatonix performing the last. Worth watching.

I always giggle at people on KZbin acting like they have anything to add to this performance because you know vocal whatever. Most vocal oriented KZbinrs throw in the towel and don’t embarrass themselves.
