Alway felt that Calgary was the hidden gem of North America. It doesn’t need to be on the level of Vancouver and Toronto, it’s one of those major cities that somehow maintains the small town feel and hospitality.

Some more fun facts, some of which even a lot of Calgarians don't know: - The exterior of the Studio Bell is actually made of a type of terracotta tile - The restaurant in the Calgary Tower rotates. Makes a complete revolution every hour at dinner times - The Calgary Tower has an Olympic torch on the top for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics that is occasionally lit when the Olympics are happening or during special occasions - The new Telus Sky tower has LEDs integrated on the exterior so the whole north and south facades light up at night to show various visualizations and images - The Bow tower was meant to have a mirroring sister tower built across the street to be called the Arrow but was cancelled - There's an abandoned C-Train (metro) station under city hall that was never completed - Denver is only 0.35 miles higher than Calgary - The Rundle Ruins on the east end of Downtown are the remaining pieces of the second General Hospital built in 1894.

@@psychoblack1411 ----- Well, I hope you are not psycho, cuz Calgary's small but growing Black population, mostly from recent Carribbean Immigration, is very level-headed. Calgary also has a large Chinese population, Indian population, and Amadyha Muslim population. Is there racism from Whites in Calgary? There may be some small amounts, but as a White guy who has lived in Calgary a lot, as well as all over Western Canada, there is also a detectable haughtiness and superiority from some of these Immigrant Groups, although I have never noticed it from the Carribbean Blacks.

Another interesting fact, Calgary is roughly equal distance to Banff as it is to Midland Provincial Park, one of the most geographically interesting and stunning parts of Canada. It has the richest deposit of fossils on earth and you can see them partially excavated alongside trails, or in the Royal Tyrrell Museum, one of the largest displays of dinosaur remains on Earth.

I work at the BOW and can share a fun fact about Calgary. The largest/tallest bridge in Calgary is actually under 6th avenue directly under the BOW. The underground parkade at the BOW spans from 5th ave to 7th ave and in order not to disrupt traffic they had to build a huge 7 story bridge over the hole for the parkade, they then built the parkade and the BOW 'around' this bridge. If you walked over it now you'd never know that there is an underground 'bridge' there. Very cool. Also the best views are from the 54th floor skygardens at the BOW.

As long as you stay away from the North East aka Brown Town. Try visiting the Marlborough C-Train station and dodge the crackheads smoking meth and fentanyl right in the station. This city is becoming a shithole. Too much immigration, not enough housing or affordable housing, not enough jobs, too many crackhead vagrants that roam around downtown and have essentially taken over the entire C-Train network. Mind you, it’s never been this bad until the last few years. Before the pandemic this place was a different city. Yeah, we still had all the same problems, but they were NOWHERE near the scale they are at now.

I lived in Cowtown for twenty years, and it treated me very well. Like every city/province, there are things I love about it, and things I do not. Overall, it's a great city to live in; it's safe, clean, fairly reasonable when it comes to homeownership. It's not a very touristy city, and the weather can be pretty. I moved back to my hometown of Vancouver, BC in 2016, I still miss Calgary, and haven't abandoned the possibility of moving back, should a good opportunity come my way.

My personal favourite piece of Calgary infrastructure is our 1000+ KM dedicated pathway system for cycling and walking. All new neighbourhoods are required to be tied into this system so that we might navigate from just about anywhere to anywhere else on foot or by bike. I personally have been cycling on this system for 23 years, year round, and love it.

yeah but only being able to use them for a few months a year due to the horrific cold weather makes them pointless ...its like the skywalk downtown ...build to keep you out the cold yet its closed for most of the winter and closes before 6 pm.

@@MorganMeents lol i use the pathways to walk everywhere in the spring, summer and autumn ..its not the snow removal that's an issue ...its the -30 winters that last nearly 5 months of the year that makes it useless calgary is too cold to invest in walking/bike paths ..they really need to invest in better police service that don't punish people and abuse them for trying to stay warm x . and start to remodel the city for public transport as calgary caters to people with cars .tbh if they invested in anything i think the city should be a no drive zone with better public transport to boost the economy of calgary so we don't have to rely on the largest handouts in canada from ottawa. x

Decent overview of Calgary, however u like many travel bloggers only use pix when the city is either in spring, summer & fall. Showing the streets, architecture & natural spaces with snow & ice paint a much more realistic picture of what actual life is like (for at least 6 months of the year). Many ppl move here & can't handle the dramatic weather shifts, many can. Just depends on the person.

The Tower, Heritage Park, walk along the north side of the Bow River downtown, great view of the skyscrapers. Nose Hill Park is a large elevated grassy plateau in the northwest area of the city and has pathways and great views over the city everywhere. Beware of the south side of the river just off downtown, not covered in this video is the serious homeless bum problem downtown. Avoid it but it is not too bad around the Tower. Beware of 7th ave or around the new library and city hall. Northeast Calgary is a lower socio-economic area but the big airport there is good. Northwest and southwest and the far southeast of Calgary are excellent.

Calgary resident here. Yeah, we've got alot of great stuff, I love watching the Flames in the Saddledome, or celebrating my birthday at the Stampede. You can't forget going through the plus 15s lol. But we've got a massive problem with drugs and housing (still not as bad as Toronto or Vancouver though) If you walk through any street downtown (especially Chinatown or the giant library we have) you can see people overdosing and squatting down everywhere. Also that giant library barely has any books in it lol

The one big criticism I would make about Calgary is the "homeless bum and drug bum" problem in the city center. It is a HUGE BLIGHT on this city. Rumour is most of them are from Ontario. No politician wants to solve it, and Calgarians tolerate it. Even though they like to play the "Cowboy Culture Card" in this city and it consistently votes right of center, Calgary is actually politically, socially and culturally very silent and reticent about some things, very mouthy and arrogant about some other things. I have lived in Calgary for 5 years, Vancouver for 20 years, but I usually live somewhere in the 800 km / 500 mile region between them, as I am a nature fanatic.

Winnipeg is posh, it has some top things like the zoo, forks, nice sporting venues, river trails, golf galore. Plus the best lakes and beaches within a short drive and world class fishing too. One of the worlds longest skating paths, and curling like no one's business. Biggest public collection of Inuit art at the WAG and amazing museums. Some unique festival including one of the biggest fork festivals and one of the worlds biggest snow sculpture festivals. Mix of good north American architectural styles, and well preserved area of downtown Chicago styles with a contrast of post modern and the modern throughout the core. River rides, or bbq in one of the well wooded parks, bonfire pits, river or creeks nearly though every sector of the city or small lakes dotted throughout many suburbs. Live music at many small venues, bars, and theatres. Top posh venues like the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the Winnipeg Royal Ballet. Winnipeg gets a bad rap for some localized social economic disadvantaged areas. It is a tough and proud town with two very distinct sides, but overall is often overlooked. It has a strong proud history and backed the west to be what it is today.

@@CityGeek Being compared to Denver and Dallas is a compliment and a fair one. When I was a kid I thought of Calgary as a town in the middle of the prairie. @@Sorensenator86 well.. not arguing with you by the way 😂.. while the river in Edmonton is brown, polluted and gross, the river valley in summer time is very beautiful, I agree IF you can get past the hundreds of homeless people that litter, defecate and set up tents all over it. The majority of Edmonton is ghetto, not saying Calgary doesn’t have unsavoury neighborhood’s, but over half of Edmonton is ghetto, out downtown look ok from a distance, but when you go there you see vacant buildings, crime, and homelessness. Businesses are moving away from downtown. Unlike Calgary our transit system is a complete joke, especially our LRT, Calgary was smart when they did theirs and actually did it while building the city instead of doing What Edmonton is currently doing which is building it in already developed neighborhood’s reducing vehicle traffic and make things more congested. Are malls are boring, including west ed, it isn’t what it once was. Our zoo is sad, our museum is in the ghetto, our roads are TERRIBLE, and the Anthony Henday is one of Edmontons biggest blunders next to the LRT. Calgary isn’t perfect, but as a person that has been to both I would say Calgary is miles better than Edmonton, which is why all the big wigs in Alberta live there instead of Edmonton.

It's got some downsides. It's in a recession, downtown office vacancies are way too high, not enough jobs, it's way too spread out so getting anywhere takes a long time, and it's transit system is a bit of a mess, with homeless in the C-Train stations and service reduced ever since the oil industry collapsed. The transit also doesn't run 24-7, so it makes going out for the evening a huge inconvenience. There's not much for events or culture, especially since the Saddledome's acoustics aren't good for concerts. On the bright side... lots of nature outside of Calgary, as long as you can drive.
