In heavy rail system the cars draw power from an electrified third rail that runs along the ground. You have to run a heavy rail system in a totally grade-separated subway because you can't have people crossing the ~600-volt third rail on foot. Light rail draws power from overhead lines, and can be run on the street like trams.

Chicago has a few grade crossing where Subway cars meet road traffic but that's because it's a 90+ year old subway system so standards were different back then.

@garycalgary From Wikipedia...seems related to traffic capacity. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) in its Glossary of Transit Terminology defines light rail as: "An electric railway with a 'light volume' traffic capacity compared to heavy rail. Light rail may use shared or exclusive rights-of-way, high or low platform loading and multi-car trains or single cars

The teal/pink is the old sceme. The red white is our current transit colours. Many of the trains and buses still have the old colours because recolouring them would take a long time and waste of money.

I sure would have liked to hear someone talking about the Unique transit system in this video. For the expense of going through this video production it would have been worth producing it professionally. Selling the technology and benefits of this system

It was planned like this. There is an underground tunnel under the exsisting trains. Its just that Calgary never used it.

The 3 stripe one is the old colour scheme but the red is current scheme but many old buses and trains have the old scheme because there is no point of repainting them

Well, Light Rail is for inner-city travel and then Heavy Rail is for passenger travels that go distances like... say.. a plane. Now, Metro cars and Light Rail cars just differ in size a bit, and in capacity. You can fit more people onto a Metro Car than a Light Rail Car. Examples of those that have Light Rail, are of course Calgary, Edmonton, I think Seattle, Los Angeles... Where as NYC, I think Chicago, and then most East Asian cities have Metro trains cause they care more people.

The point of the video is to highlight Calgary's Light Rail System. My videos are geared to a niche fan base, not everyday people like yourself...

@garycalgary Same could be said about the one who is still directing comments to another, no? @Nabinut I Can appreciate the fact that due to our urban sprawl, Calgary's points of terminus on the C-Train are very suburban like communities- but since they are within Calgary's urban parameters of land use, I don't think 'suburban' would be an appropriate term. What I meant was that the communities within the city's Metro would be more deserving of the term.

Moscow's Metro is second to none. Their stations are cathedrals and museums and not giant bathrooms like in Toronto.

ummmm the c-train doesn't operate in the suburbs. The suburbs are airdrie okotoks cochrane and chestermere.. And there sure as hell aren't any trains there (unfortunately)

But aren't most subway cars longer (6-8 cars)? Running light rails (3-4 cars) at grade, going through the same intersections as road traffic, is usually pretty easy; but I haven't seen a subway/road traffic intersection (doesn't mean they don't exist, I just haven't seen them).
@Nabinut

Not exactly true. Some light rail cars like the ones featured in the first minute have just as many seats and room as a traditional subway unit.

These video remember our public transport in São Paulo/Brazil. They are all always pretty empty, bus and train system, you fell respect from others passegers, never never late, are sheaper and as if you were in your own home. Hei... it was a joke man, all that I said you can consider opposite.

I wish the city would start dumping the uncomfortable U2s. For example if you are going southbound from Heritage to southland there will be a walkway in between the tracks and the U2s start shaking severely from side to side there.

Good to see the Siemens U2's in Service , here in Frankfurt Germany the U2's will be retired untill the end of 2016 , our local Transit operator wanted to sell the U2's but no one wanted the U2's. now they will be scrapped after the retirement. Our oldest U2's from 1968 are already scrapped , but the newer ones are still in service. but we dont know how long :( The U2's in Frankfurt will be replaced by the Bombardier Flexity Siwift series. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHLPf6ykgcd9mNE

1:42 Now that's screwed up... that's high population density! You don't put surface rail through city centres. I wish more rail was invested in North American cities though like there is in Europe.
