@rickw9169Күн бұрын
I believe you should be corrected on one thing you said. You said that when the immigrant agricultural labor is deported, more expensive labor will take it's place. I used to work in labor law enforcement and would do unannounced field inspection of farms and orchards. On one occasion I talked to the owner of a large peach orchard in California's Central Valley. He told me a story about trying to go back to a time when high school kids used to do the agricultural labor. He posted job offerings at the local unemployment insurance office and local schools. He told them that a good and diligent worker could make up to $30 per hour (piece rate). He had plenty of takers. The first job was culling the peach trees (a process of removing immature fruit to get proper fruit to tree load). It paid by the tree, $10 a tree. A Mexican laborer could do 3 trees an hour, hence the $30 per hour. They all showed up on the designated day at 6am. The last one quit before 2pm. None of them could finish a tree in an hour and the work was too strenuous. Based on my knowledge of work ethics of the modern world, you're going to be very hard pressed to get a kid or anyone else to work in agriculture when they can get $18 per hour at McDonalds.
@ChroniclerAetherКүн бұрын
That sounds like less of a "work ethics" problem and more of a problem with being unfamiliar with the work, though. :/ A Mexican laborer who's *used to the job* can do up to 3 trees an hour, with the key words being *USED TO THE JOB*. Of course local high schoolers and people who aren't used to farm work can't get anywhere close to that speed on their first shift; even if they were thoroughly taught how to properly cull the trees (which I doubt), they're still unfamiliar with the equipment, farm work in general, and so on. *No one* is going to stick around for a job that they'll make maybe $10-$20 for an entire day's worth of hard labor, which is, IMO, what the workers will most likely make until they gain the skills necessary to do the work in a fast and safe manner. If the peach farmer wanted to actually retain the people found "at the local unemployment office and local schools," he should guarantee them an hourly rate (say $18/hour, in order to be competitive with McDonalds) while they're in a training period (a month or two, maybe up to an entire season).
@rickw9169Күн бұрын
@@ChroniclerAether Agreed. But I do not think that merely competing with McDonalds is enough. It would have to be significantly more. The up and down the ladder is exhausting and what I have experienced with most of the work force in today's labor market is that they want to be at a job where they can be staring at their cell phones for half of their shift. I simply do not see a scenario where the pay would be adequate to get sufficient workers regardless of the amount. Work ethic isn't what it once was. At one point, I worked for the state as an employment tax auditor. The norm was 8 audits per month. Fast forward to today and the norm is 1.4 audits per month. I asked a manager friend why don't they set higher standards. The response was because they will quit and we can't replace them. My son works as the manager of a meat department in one of Kroger's Supermarkets. He tells me about the same problems in the private sector. Same response, it's hard to find replacements for them. It has quite a bit to do with work ethics

Expect prices of tariffed goods to rise much higher than the tariff percent as the surcharges will compound at each level in the distribution supply chain. Fruits and veg go through 2-3 levels, raw materials like steel or electronic components can go through 5-10 - each level passing along an increase to try to maintain their own profit margins.

This is just my bubble and my experience so I married into a staunch Republican family and my dad’s brothers and mom are staunch Republicans. They don’t think when it comes to politics. Sure they’re smart people because of the jobs they have, several are engineers but when it comes to politics, they don’t exercise critical thinking at all. Because they get all their information from Fox or other conservative outlets, they’re programmed to respond to certain phrases or words. For example, if you talk about gas prices being high, their programmed response is “well it’s liberal policies.” When you show them facts that we’re producing the slightly more oil than when Trump was in office, they don’t know how to respond to that. You can’t explain to them that oil is globally priced, there are different grades of oil and our refineries are designed to refine certain grades efficiently. If you try, you lose them, they literally lose interest. From my experience, explaining things to them using facts does not work because they don’t have the ability (or desire) to think for themselves or change. It’s sad, it truly is and it affects everybody. I know conservatives that were scared to death of Harris winning and Trump is doing exactly what they were scared Harris would do. But they see it as “Trump’s policies won’t hurt me.”

I firmly believe that trump wants to cause as much chaos as he can for losing in 2020.

The worst of it is that they don’t realize it’s their own government raising the prices not the people exporting. Other side effect if a lettuce from Mexico is now 1.25$ American producers will raise their prices to match!! Do you think they would pass those saving on to you?? 😂😂😂😂 It’s going to be so much worse than you think it’s going to be.

If only they were smart enough to actually understand how tariffs work. Trump did say he loves the uneducated but we who did know will suffer right along with these idiots😢

God, I like this sarcasm.😂 Maga will learn fast and pretty hard what they had voted for. To sad for all the people who voted for Americas future. But maybe next time Americans had learned something about the effects a election will have.

I wonder what they're saying in the comments on right wing channels. LoL, I might go check, just to see how they're justifying it to themselves or gaslighting themselves into thinking its a good thing. Actually no, they're probably blaming the left. I bet that's why this seems to be the only policy trump is making public statements about before he takes office. No matter what they're saying the Olympic level of mental gymnastics are going to be a thing to be seen, BIGLY.
