This is a comedy sketch but it is so accurate. A friend of mine bought a house a while ago. A squatter moved in the day after she showed it to me. The squatters showed the police some nonsense scribbled on a piece of paper in pencil. The police were on the squatter side! @@marks-0-0 I live on Maui My property manager at the time lived in California. During a change in tenancy, squatters moved in. I had to move into the house myself to get them out and facilitate repairs. While I was there one of my twin boys had a ruptured appendix and had to be flown to Oahu for treatment, I had to come back home to Maui and take care of the other twin. As soon as I left the property, the squatters move back in two more times and had to be removed by police both times as they were at that point trespassers. They broke every window in the house, doors, cabinets, change the locks, tried stealing pipes. 16,000 was the uncompensated amount, the total damage was in excess of 30.

In Queens NY (flushing( a home owner was arrested and the squatters get rights.In California, for a squatter to claim rights through an adverse possession claim, they must occupy the property continuously and openly for at least five years. Additionally, they must pay property taxes for that duration. Once a squatter has been living in a property for 30 days, property owners must navigate New York City's eviction laws to remove them. In my neighborhood a woman homeowner gave shelter to a homeless woman. It took months and $$$ paid to a lawyer to evict her. No fake lease.
