Californian House: Earthquake SIZE Comparison

What if a fault line ruptured right underneath your house? Even though it is very unlikely, here's a simulation about what kind of shaking to expect if that was the case.

nice video! I think you need to change the seismic intensity notation. In Japanese Shindo scale, there are 0,1,2,3,4,5-,5+,6-,6+,7. 1-,1+,2-,2+,3-,3+,4-,4+ is not exist For example, when the calculated seismic intensity is 3.5 to 4.0 or 4.0~4.5, do not use 4-or4+ It's '4'

I know it doesn't exist officially, but it can be inferred so I made an informal decision. Quakes don't just have 7 levels but an infinite combination of acceleration levels, PGV, PGD etc. Honestly the best way to describe the shaking in videos would be to express the acceleration in G units. :)

Very well made I'd want to point out that the Japanese Shindo Scale only consists of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-, 5+, 6-, 6+ and 7 Japan Shindo 1-, 1+, 2-, 2+, 3-, 3+, 4-, 4+ don't exist (although it could be a good idea for a hypothetical Shindo scale) And to convert it we do this (rough but close enough) MMI → JMA Shindo 1 → 0 2 → 1 3 → 2 4 → 3 5 → 4 6 → 5- 7 → 5+ 8 → 6- 9 → 6+ ≥10 → 7 And also next time do Shindo 2.1, 3.6, 4.6 instead of 2-, 4- JMA Int. → Shindo ≤0.4 → 0 0.5 - 1.4 → 1 1.5 - 2.4 → 2 2.5 - 3.4 → 3 3.5 - 4.4 → 4 4.5 - 4.9 → 5- 5.0 - 5.4 → 5+ 5.5 - 5.9 → 6- 6.0 - 6.4 → 6+ ≥6.5 → 7 Cheers!

Lowest Magnitudes recorded for each damaging Shindo Level: Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 7: M 6.5 on 14th April 2016 in 益城町宮園 (Greater Kumamoto) Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 6+: M 5.8 on 16th April 2016 in 産山村山鹿 (Near Mount Aso) Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 6: M 6.1 on 15th July 1941 in 長野市箱清水 (Northern Nagano Prefecture) Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 6-: M 5.1 on 18th August 2000 in 新島村式根島 (Izu Islands) and 03rd January 2019 in 和水町江田 (Greater Kumamoto) Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 5+: M 4.5 on 05th October 2011 in 菊池市旭志 (Greater Kumamoto) and 29th April 2016 in 由布市湯布院町川上 (in Oita Prefecture, a Kumamoto Aftershock as well) Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 5: M 3.7 on 20th October 1992 in 竹富町西表 (Miyakojima, OS Taiwan) Lowest Magnitude for Shindo 5-: M 3.7 on 12th March 2011 in 栄村北信 (in Northern Nagano) Note, that before 1996, there were no Lower and Upper 5 and 6. These got introduced after the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

In and around the city of Hollister, CA, there are buildings and a winery are are built on top of fault traces, and the winery has had extensive damage due to slow creep. The Caleveras fault, part of the San Andreas system, passes underneath the town. Nice house, BTW. I'm imagining a family coming home from a vacation to find their house destroyed by a major quake.

Compare USGS shakemaps to JMA intensity maps and you will see a rough correlation: Shindo 0 = Mercalli I Shindo 1 = Mercalli II Shindo 2 = Mercalli III Shindo 3 = Mercalli IV Shindo 4 = Mercalli V Shindo 5-= Mercalli VI Shindo 5+ = Mercalli VII Shindo 6- = Mercalli VIII Shindo 6+ = Mercalli IX Shindo 7 = Mercalli X There is no 2-, 2+, 3-, 3+, 4-, 4+ on the Shindo scale

yes, but the issue appears when you use all 12 levels on the Modified Mercalli Scale. So I thought of informally expressing more categories. Ultimately, numbers/levels are just helping us to get an idea of what we are expressing. They are not absolute

California needs to take a page from Japan and China and build to stand 9.0 and greater-9.5 as a maximum at least! At 7.5 the illustrated home here is completely destroyed! Same home in Japan or China would still be standing! Non-ductile spring suspensions would help! This from a Californian who lived through Loma Prieta in 89 and Northridge in 94.
