@maxmustermann3692 жыл бұрын
i dont think neutral is the right word. i mean if that were the case it would have been a country like switzerland or even a country completely disconnected from western powers. british royalty derives from germany (and had excellent relations with especially prussia till willhelm II) and wilhelm I even fled to london during the revolution, so its very odd that the land was given to the us. the following is my speculation (bc i couldnt find any info on it), but either wilhelm wasnt happy how the british royalty treated him or, much more likely, the americans bribed the counsel more than the british...

@@Regimentz. as i said, thats just my speculation. im not to sure about that beeing a threat though. theese islands are not really that significant, as far away from germany as you can get and the year is 1872. the german empire is one year old and at that point arguably the strongest military power on the european continent while the us is not the powerhouse it will transform into later. i think its much more likely that money and/or personal preference made the decision here.

Whenever you see countries fighting over seemingly insignificant land, it's usually for decent enough reasons that outside observers might not understand such as geopolitical, advantage in case of war, land that helps repel attacks from outside invaders, putting distance between their borders and their main population/economic centers, natural resources, minerals (like gold), the land has historical significance, ethnic groups belonging to each country live on the land, etc. Both countries wanted San Juan Island (the western one) for strategic/geopolitical reasons. Control of all the islands ensured control of the area between the Strait of Georgia to the north and Strait of Juan de Fuca to the south. This meant the owner of the islands could block others from entering at will. This would be beneficial in case of war or as leverage in any future negotiations between to countries (could threaten to block access). I think the reason why Britain was willing to settle for just having San Juan Island while America wanted all the islands is because Britain already had an advantage due to having the most powerful navy. The US needed all the islands to have any hope of blocking the British in the event of war (like a naval version of the Battle of Thermopylae). The British likely could easily force their way through with just the western island.

38:06 Letting Germany decide is not THAT random... Other than France or Russia, Germany never had any colonies in North America, which made them neutral on this subject. Germany was a great power, which gave them the authority to make a decision. We tend to see Germany as a warmonger, but they were often keen on finding a diplomatic solution. Take the Berlin Conference of 1884 as an example. All major colonial powers came together in Berlin to negotiate how they would divide Africa among them.

How my Civil War History teacher described it with the selling of ships. British naval people would dock a ship in the Caribbean and just leave it there, the confederate forces would leave a large sum of money at a certain location. The Brits would then go to that location, "find" the money and take it. While the Confederates would just "happen to come across" an empty British ship, and take it without complaint and leave.

Traveling there actually meant going via ship, then through panama (no canal) and by ship again. Dealing with deseases all the way. It was a hell of a trip. The Chernow biography describes it in some detail. Which also shows how incredibly remote this area was, even for the US, not to mention for Britain.

For the backstory on Douglas, he was a biracial diplomat from British Guyana. The reason he was so focused on defending British honour in the Gulf Islands was that he would’ve been unduly blamed because of his race should the Americans succeed, and that’s why he over compensated with aggression when faced with the Americans. It’s also one of the reasons the RN officers pushed back on his orders. They were suicidal orders, but there was also a lot of prejudice against him. Douglas was a cool guy. My grandparents burial plots only a few headstones away from Douglas’s in Victoria. Also, those Hawaiians on San Juan ended up relocating to my island, Saltspring, the biggest of the British islands closest to San Juan. The tallest mountain on the island is named after Admiral Baynes, and the biggest town on the island is named after his flagship HMS Ganges. It’s a small insignificant island in the middle of nowhere, but I always found the war fascinating.

pretty sure when I was in grade school we took a field trip to fort Vancouver (lived in Oregon), of course being the kid I didn't pay attention but still super cool!

Actually during the War of 1812, we razed the British Canadian capital, I think at the time Toronto? (correct me if I’m mistaken), so yeah they got us and we got them too

A draw sounds like the best way to describe our 1812 conflict, yep.

I lived only a few miles away from these islands…. I can proudly say I’ve been to the place where a pig almost started a major conflict. Invented been to the British camp and it’s pretty cool. I’ve also had one of these cool drinks at a restaurant it was called the Pig War Martini (it was non alcoholic though)and it came with a little rubber pig that looks a little like the one in the video 😂😂
